A UNIFYING GLOBAL BRAND
With more than 2,700 associates in 27 offices worldwide, HOK was a
firm with global reach, major stature — and fragmented identity. Offices
across the globe marketed themselves independently, existing more like
a loose federation of entities than part of a singular brand committed to
a shared vision. HOK partnered with TOKY to create a cohesive brand
across continents, practice areas, and platforms.

AN UNRIVALED DIGITAL PRESENCE
TOKY has shaped HOK’s digital presence since the Web
began, helping the firm spotlight its people, share its ideas,
and promote its work to companies and recruits.
The third and newest iteration, launched in July 2012,
was conceived to finalize the “One HOK” positioning,
with all operating entities unified in look while able to
market themselves.
Operating from a single easy-to-use content management
system, the site seamlessly serves up content to all devices,
from the smallest smartphone to the largest desktop display.
Projects can be swapped out quickly and easily, and images
rescale automatically.
On its launch, the new site was hailed as both elegant
and innovative.

A GLIMPSE INSIDE
“Life at HOK” was a first-of-its-kind blog
created to show the people behind the
scenes at HOK. To launch the blog, all
contributors were brought to the firm’s
headquarters, provided with inexpensive
video cameras, and sent out in groups to
interview each other and gather footage
of HOK’s local projects.

Plenty of firms talk about integrated design construction and solutions,
but Chicago-based architecture, construction, and engineering firm
Wight & Company embraces cross-discipline collaboration as a core part
of its workflow and culture. Wight partnered with TOKY to showcase this
“Design & Delivery” approach in a way that looks and feels different as
soon as visitors arrive on site.

TWO GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL
TOKY designed Christner’s first generation website in tandem with the brand
refresh. The site focused on culture and made the work portfolio look fabulous, but
as web browsers evolved, the time came to rethink the firm’s online presence. In
2014 we updated the site, making it more interactive and viewable on any screen.
BIGGER, BETTER IMAGES
One of the most noticeable differences on the new site is a drastic enlargement of
images. The Home Page reinforces the “QUESTION. COLLABORATE. CREATE.”
messaging with a quick animation then presents full screen images showcasing
recent work.

PEOPLE FIRST
The people section — one of the more popular pages from the old
site — was updated to accommodate more bios, more images, and
more interactivity. This section now offers a much better glimpse of
Christner’s employees, how they think, and how they work together.

A BRAND WITHOUT BOUNDARIES
Well-known for landscape architecture, urban design, and planning
expertise, SWT Design needed to better represent its industry leadership,
nationally recognized work, and laid-back culture. After extensive research,
TOKY created a logo, messaging, marketing materials, and a website that
encapsulate the “no boundaries” mindset of SWT’s leadership and staff —
representing their breadth of award-winning work without putting projects
into constrictive boxes.

A SITE THAT MOVES
The redesigned site showcases SWT’s new brand
messaging in a unique and visually impactful manner.
Video loops, nature photography, and striking portraiture
— all shot by our in-house team — evoke emotion and
show the personality of the firm’s leadership.
The project landing page features a custom tool that lets
visitors filter work according to project scale, temporality,
and type. This system fluidly organizes projects without
constricting work to predefined boxes.
Along with the looping videos, TOKY wrote, shot, and
produced a narrated video to explain the philosophy
behind the work that SWT does and why they do it.

The “LIVING DESIGN” theme — the encapsulation of the brand
platform — is featured throughout marketing materials as part
art element, part tagline.
In the process of capturing portraits of SWT’s leadership team, TOKY
collected dozens of landscape and detail shots to create a library

A TOOL FOR SUSTAINABLE CHANGE
The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) provides resources
to help individuals and organizations make the case for sustainable
landscape solutions. LAF asked TOKY to transition its Landscape
Performance Series — a collection of research, case studies, and
tools from academia and professional practice — from a small section
on its main website to a separate and easily navigable microsite.

  • 9. TOKY.COM INTERACTIVE STORYTELLING The redesigned site is responsive and highly interactive. Animations and surprising features throughout the site — including a menu built into Wight’s signature ampersand — take users on a journey to learn more about the firm’s work and culture. FLEXIBLE CONTENT MANAGEMENT A highly customized content management system allows Wight’s internal team to easily add a wide range of detail to project pages and organize landing pages based on both market and service.   • 10. TOKY.COM CELEBRATING 75 YEARS In addition to the main site, TOKY designed and developed Wight’s 75th anniversary microsite. This interactive timeline celebrates the firm’s history through photos, stories, and videos from decades past. Employees, clients, and partners are invited to submit their own memories of Wight. The multimedia timeline includes projects and milestones dating back to 1939.

But the firm struggled to describe this expertise to potential clients, employees, and partners. In order to expand nationally and into emerging markets, KSS needed to refine and strengthen its existing brand.   • 13. TOKY.COM A NEW SITE TO MATCH TOKY designed and developed a fully responsive site to introduce the new brand messaging and identity in a visually striking manner. Looping video and a live feed of Instagram images give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at KSS’s unique process and culture. CUSTOM SORTING To demonstrate KSS’s unique ability to conceive and execute complex projects that exist at the “intersections” of standard market segments, the “Our Work” page invites visitors to filter projects according to both industry and capability. SINCE LAUNCH THE NEW CHRISTNERINC.COM HAS SEEN: 53% increase in session duration 24% decrease in bounce rate TOKY.COM 158% increase in time spent on “Our Work” page TWO GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL TOKY designed Christner’s first generation website in tandem with the brand refresh. The site focused on culture and made the work portfolio look fabulous, but as web browsers evolved, the time came to rethink the firm’s online presence. In 2014 we updated the site, making it more interactive and viewable on any screen. BIGGER, BETTER IMAGES One of the most noticeable differences on the new site is a drastic enlargement of images. The Home Page reinforces the “QUESTION. COLLABORATE. CREATE.” messaging with a quick animation then presents full screen images showcasing recent work.
  • 17. TOKY.COM PEOPLE FIRST The people section — one of the more popular pages from the old site — was updated to accommodate more bios, more images, and more interactivity. This section now offers a much better glimpse of Christner’s employees, how they think, and how they work together.

TOKY.COM A BRAND WITHOUT BOUNDARIES Well-known for landscape architecture, urban design, and planning expertise, SWT Design needed to better represent its industry leadership, nationally recognized work, and laid-back culture. After extensive research, TOKY created a logo, messaging, marketing materials, and a website that encapsulate the “no boundaries” mindset of SWT’s leadership and staff — representing their breadth of award-winning work without putting projects into constrictive boxes.   • 20. TOKY.COM A SITE THAT MOVES The redesigned site showcases SWT’s new brand messaging in a unique and visually impactful manner. Video loops, nature photography, and striking portraiture — all shot by our in-house team — evoke emotion and show the personality of the firm’s leadership. The project landing page features a custom tool that lets visitors filter work according to project scale, temporality, and type. This system fluidly organizes projects without constricting work to predefined boxes. Along with the looping videos, TOKY wrote, shot, and produced a narrated video to explain the philosophy behind the work that SWT does and why they do it.   • 23. TOKY.COM A TOOL FOR SUSTAINABLE CHANGE The Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) provides resources to help individuals and organizations make the case for sustainable landscape solutions. LAF asked TOKY to transition its Landscape Performance Series — a collection of research, case studies, and tools from academia and professional practice — from a small section on its main website to a separate and easily navigable microsite. TOKY.COM ENHANCED READABILITY TOKY introduced features to make Case Study Briefs easier to read and skim, including headers, subheads, and the ability to navigate directly to specific case study sections such as “Sustainable Features,” “Cost Comparisons,” or “Lessons Learned.” NEW WAYS TO EXPLORE The microsite features sophisticated content discovery tools, from enhanced search capabilities to multilayer content filters and related content recommendations. We also introduced “Collections,” which are themed groups of content curated by LAF and leading thinkers in the landscape architecture field.
