The document describes a prisoner's dilemma game with two prisoners who each have the choice to confess or stay silent. If they both stay silent, they each serve 1 year in prison. If one confesses and the other stays silent, the confessor goes free and the silent prisoner serves 10 years. If they both confess, they each serve 5 years. It notes that playing defectively (confessing) pays off more than cooperating (staying silent), even though cooperating would lead to a better outcome for both.
5. ONLY OBJECTIVE OF EACH PLAYER IS TO MAXIMIZE HIS OWN PAYOFF, WITHOUT ANY CONCERN FOR THE PAYOFF OF THE OTHER PLAYER Prisoner B stays Silent Prisoner B Confesses Prisoner A stays Silent Each serves 1 year A: 10 years B: Free Prisoner A Confesses A: Free B: 10 years Each serves 5 years
6.
7. Players/Prisoners are driven to an inferior, mediocre outcome, because each of them is fearful of the other’s decision and each one has a strong incentive to cheat, rather than cooperate.
