4. AVOID COSTLY DELAYS: CVSA ROADCHECK WEEK IS COMING, MAY 4-6
The 2021 CVSA International Roadcheck is coming up quickly, taking place from
May 4-6 this year, with an emphasis on lighting and hours of service. If violations
are found either the vehicle or driver will be placed out of service, causing supply
chain interruptions.
During last year’s Roadcheck:
• Hours of service was the top driver violation category in North America, accounting for 35% of all driver out-of-service conditions.
• “Lamps inoperable,” was the top vehicle violation, accounting for about 12% of all vehicle violations.
• Due to increased scrutiny, a number of carriers and drivers choose not to operate the week of the event and our data shows
that each year there is a significant drop in overall available capacity in the marketplace.
• Reduced capacity or delays caused by non-compliant drivers or faulty equipment will add days to your supply chain. This could be
even more with the already tight market conditions.

6. IN THE NEWS: SUEZ CANAL CLEARED, DISRUPTION WILL REMAIN
Significant volume moves through the Suez Canal daily; now that the
mega-container ship Ever Given has been refloated, experts are
predicting major disruption ahead.
• East coast import volumes will drop temporarily, then are predicted to
surge as delayed ships arrive.
• For U.S. importers, container availability may decrease.
• As of Friday rates per forty-foot equivalent unit (FEU) were at and near all-time highs; Asia-West Coast
rates and Asia-East Coast were at $5,151 per FEU and $5,778 per FEU, respectively, according to the
Freightos Baltic Daily Index.

7. IN THE NEWS: TERMINAL OPERATORS SAY RAILCAR SCARCITY IS NOW DRIVING
LA-LB PORT CONGESTION
“Terminal operators say a shortage of intermodal railcars has become the top
driver of congestion at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, although
western railroads say they are working to push more railcars to Southern
California.”
• Railcar dwell times have doubled to about 10 days, which indicates railcar shortages
have increased dramatically.
• Port-related supply chains are overwhelmed due to the seven-month-long spike in US imports from Asia and the resources of
all asset providers are stressed.
• “Rail containers remained on terminals for 8.6 days, up from 7.9 days in January. Additionally, 55.7 percent of the containers
remained on the terminals for more than five days, up from 50.2 percent the month before, PMSA said. Terminal operators
tell JOC.com that four days or less is the preferred dwell time for rail containers.”
