6. IN THE NEWS: CANADA’S JUNE ELD DEADLINE NEARS
Transport Canada will start “soft enforcement” of its new ELD rules on
June 12; intra-Canada and cross-border fleets need to prepare their ELD
plan now. Complicating things further, “As of mid-March, no ELD has been
certified yet in Canada.”
• U.S.-approved ELDs may not meet Canada’s certification standards.
• This additional regulatory requirement has the potential to negatively
impact capacity and freight flows.

7. IN THE NEWS: MULTIPLE PORTS BREAK RECORDS IN MARCH; DRIVEN BY
IMPORT VOLUMES
The Port of Long Beach and Port of Charleston both recently reported record results for
March – a month that, in normal conditions,is more relaxed from order peaks associated with
U.S. and Chinese holidays. “The unprecedentedsurge of imports at container ports is
expected to continue at least through the end of the summer,according to the National Retail
Federation’s monthly Port Tracker report on Wednesday.”
• Long Beach terminals handled 840,387 twenty-footequivalent units (TEUs); the previous
record was in Decemberat 815,885.
• Long Beach imports grew by 74% YOY while exports slightly declined.
• Imports to the Port of Charleston grew by 34% YOY.
• Typical slow seasons at the ports are not expected this year due to continued consumer
demand;what consumers are not spending on travel, they are shifting toward online retail.
