APPLICATIONS OF GLASS FIBER
Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete(G.F.R.C)
Why in Concrete?
• High failure strain(up to 5.4%)
• High Tensile strength(up to 4.0 G Pa)
• Environmental resistance.
Application Types:
• Floorings and foundations
• Tunnel linings(inside tunnel layer)
• Building façade panels(exterior
decorative panel)
• Drainage system.(concrete pipes)
BALLISTIC PROTECTION
Ballistic protected equipment are mostly used in military sector
which uses S2 Glass fiber. S-2 Glass® fiber : S-2 Glass® fiber
based laminates are proven in over 30 years of demanding
military applications and provide exceptionally high mechanical
properties—due to its good impact resistance and toughness.
Application Type :
• Glass Armor vehicle/Tanks ( HJ 1 Armor system)
• Spall liners ( vehicle insides layer)
• Shipboard armor( low cost/high ballistic performance)
• Military helmets
UK MoD Foxhound Vehicle
oFire-resistant clothing are made by glass fibers
for firefighters and laboratory workers due to
their heat and fire resistance.
oThey are used to create high-performance
clothing for athletes that require heat and
moisture management.
oFuturistic and fancy designs in clothing and
accessories are made by glass fibers due to their
transparent and reflective nature.
Apparel & Clothing
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
o Glass fibers are used for transmitting data at high speeds over
long distances with minimal signal loss.
o Faster download/upload speeds and Greater bandwidth than
copper cables.
o Glass fibers are used in submarine cables laid on the ocean floor
to connect continents and enable international communication.
These cables are essential for global connectivity and facilitate
the exchange of data between different regions of the world.
ELECTRICAL INSULATION:
• Electrical Cables: Glass fibres are used as an
insulation in electrical cables to prevent the flow of
eletricity Between conductors , the ensuring safety
and reliability in power transmission.
• Electronic Devices: Glass fibers are utilized as
insulation in electronic devices such as circuit
boards, transformers, and capacitors to protect
components from electrical shorts and interference.
• Insulating tapes and fabrics: Glass fibers are
woven into tapes and fabrics used for wrapping and
insulating electrical wires, cables, and components
in various industries.
WIND ENERGY
Wind Turbine Blades: Glass fiber composites provide
durability and corrosion resistance for wind turbine
blades.
Lightweight: Despite their strength, glass fibers are
lightweight, which is crucial for ensuring the efficiency
and of wind turbine blades. Lighter blades can capture
more wind energy and are easier to install and
maintain
Cost effectiveness:Glass fibers are relatively
inexpensive compared to other reinforcement
materials, contributing to cost-effective wind energy
production.
MEDICAL APPLICATIONS
Medical Imaging:
Illuminate internal organs/tissues. Used in
endoscopes and surgical cameras.
Surgical Tools:
Used in endoscopes, laparoscopes
Bandages:
Glass fiber bandage is a new type of medical
bandage, with lightweight, flexible, not easy to slip
off, suitable for all kinds of fracture fixation and
correction.
APPLICATIONS IN AEROSPACE & AIRCRAFT
• Used as an Interior structure of fuselage In
aircraft.
• Aircraft flooring
• Helecopter rotor blades
• Filament windings around rocket cases
(With epoxy or polyurethane resins)
PROPERTIES
Strength, lightweight, corrosion resistance,
durability, temperature resistant
APPLICATIONS IN PLASTICS
• Used in plastics as GRP ( Plastics
matrix and glass fiber).
• high stregth to light weight ratio.
• GRP can be form in any shape. e.g
panels , pipes, boat hulls & seats,
fishing rods and wall paneling.
• Properties:
• Strength(E glass fiber 2000-
3500 Mpa) coression
resistant and light weight
Sporting equipment like cricket helmets, racquets,
and skis benefit from glass fiber's strength and
performance.
 High impact resistance(ability to absorb energy)
 High strength/light weight.
 High flexural strain
• Glass fiber composite is molded into shapes to
form that equipments.
• Glass fiber may be used in:
 Mat form
 Chopped form
 Woven form
