The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has identified 12 high priority health indicators that will be tracked over the next decade to measure the nation's health progress. The indicators are part of the Healthy People 2020 initiative, which sets public health targets every 10 years. The 12 indicators include access to healthcare, clinical preventive services, environmental health, injury and violence prevention, maternal and child health, mental health, nutrition and obesity, oral health, reproductive health, social determinants of health, substance abuse, and tobacco use. HHS will monitor specific metrics under each indicator area to evaluate success in improving public health.
