‘face’thatwepresent.Wearecurrentlyrenovating
theDepartmentandrevampingourwebsite.These

IntheFallof2012,theSociologyDepartmentandtheRyersonStudentsUnionwerehonouredto
hostDr.HenryA.Giroux’spresentationon“TheCrisisofYouthinanAgeofDisposability,”astheinau-
guraleventintheeSociologyDepartment’sSpeakerSeries.Beinginawide-ranging eldwithmany
sub-disciplines,membersoftheSociologyprogramwereaptto ndmanypartsofDr.Giroux’stalk
relevant,interesting,andmeaningfultotheirown eldofstudies.
Dr.Giroux’senthusiasmandzestforcriticalthoughtandequalityareunquestionableashedis-
cussedatlengththeimportanceoflinking“criticalthoughttoaprofoundimpatiencewiththestatuscussedatlengththeimportanceoflinking“criticalthoughttoaprofoundimpatiencewiththestatus
quo”.Hefocusedhisdiscussiononthe“neoliberalmachine”whichdesertsandrendersyouth,par-
ticularlythosethatarefromlow-incomeandminoritybackgrounds,asdisposablepopulations.He
poignantlypointsoutwithstatisticsthatthismachinehasgivenincredibleprotstocorporations
whilecausingenvironmentaldestruction,atrociouslevelsofhumansuffering,andtheimpoverish-
mentoftheworkingclassanddisposableyouth.
Dr.Girouxexplainedthattherearetwowarsbeingwagedagainstyouth.The rstwaragainst
youthisthe‘softwar’,whichincludestheadvertisingindustrythatcommodiesyouthandshiftsyouthisthe‘softwar’,whichincludestheadvertisingindustrythatcommodiesyouthandshifts
theiridentitiesfromcriticalcollectivecitizensintoindividualizedconsumers.Atauniversitycampus
surroundedbyconsumerism,asDr.Girouxspokeofthe“low-intensitywarwagedbycorporateinsti-
tutions”wewereforcedtoreectonourdailyrelationshipwiththeconsumeristworld.Thesecond,
the‘hardwar’criminalizes,targets,andpunishesparticularyouthconsidered“failedconsumers".
Theseyouthareoftenmarginalizedandoppressedbytheirrace,ethnicity,orclass.Again,thecount-
lesschillingrealizationsDr.GirouxmakesstrikeachordasinamulticulturalcitylikeTorontowherelesschillingrealizationsDr.GirouxmakesstrikeachordasinamulticulturalcitylikeTorontowhere
insidiousandsubtleracismandclassismstilllinger,withracialprolingstillahot-buttonissue.
Dr.Girouxisadistinguishedscholarandanintellectualprovocateur.Hismostrecentbooksin-
clude“TwilightoftheSocial:resurgentPublicsintheAgeofDisposability;and,DisposableYouth,Ra-
cializedMemories,andtheCultureofCruelty.Girouxfearlesslychallengesthestate’scurrenteco-

ChairPamelaSugimandescribedJeanGolden’s
accomplishments:
“Forfortyoneyears,withintheRyersoncom-
munity,ProfessorJeanGoldenhasbeenapioneer
andleaderineducationalandemploymentequity,
diversityandinclusion.Shehasconsistentlydem-
onstratedapassionatecommitmenttocritical
thinkingandtransformativesocialchange”.
ProfessorGolden’scareeratRyersonbeganin
1971andheraccomplishmentsaremany.Profes-
sorGoldenwastheChairoftheSociologyDepart-
mentfrom1973-1977.EarlyinhercareerProfessor
Goldenbecamecommittedtoresearchingand
advocatingforequitableandinclusivehiringand
educationalpractices.ShewasontheExecutiveof
theRyersonFacultyAssociationforover25years
duringwhichtimeshespear-headeddiscussions
surroundingequityissues,createdaRFAexecutive
Equityposition,andorganizedRyersoncommunity
andacrossCanadapresentationsandworkshops
onahostofequityissuesinteachingandhiring.In
1989RyersonandtheRFAreceivedtheProvinceof
OntarioAwardforEmploymentEquityasaresultofOntarioAwardforEmploymentEquityasaresultof
herunionactivismandworkwiththeadministra-
tiononequityissues.ProfessorGoldenwrote
Ryerson’sHumanRightspolicywhichbecamethe
modelforuniversityhumanrightspoliciesacross
Canadainthe1990’s.Shealsocreatedandwasthe
rstSeniorAdministratoroftheRyersonSexual
Harassment,EquityandSafetyandSecurityOffice.
ProfessorGoldenwasalsoinstrumentalinthe
creationofthe rstWomen’sStudiescoursesat
Ryersoninthe1970s,theinstitutionalizationofthe
CaribbeanStudiescoursesinthelate1990’sand
the rstWomenandHumanRightscourseinthe
21stcentury.Shewasalsoinvolvedinthecreation
oftheRyersonCaribbeanResearchCentre(RCRC)
andservedasitsrstdirectorin2003-04.andservedasitsrstdirectorin2003-04.
ProfessorGolden’steachingpracticehascon-
stantlyworkedtobridgethegapsbetweenstu-
dents’lives,criticalideas,andcommunitysocial
change.Sheencouragesherstudentstobecome
involvedincommunityactivismandleadsbyex-
ample.ProfessorGoldenhastaughtyouthinthe
TorontoCityAdultLearningCentrethroughthe
RyersonSpanningtheGaps-AccesstoPost-
SecondaryEducationprogramandshehastaught
immigrantwomenattheTorontoNewcomer
WomenImmigrantServices.Shedevelopedand
deliveredBackhistoryeducationalworkshopsfor
tenyearsattheprimarylevelintheTorontoDistrict
SchoolBoard,andanti-racismworkshopsinthe
communityandeducationalequityworkshopsin
theCaribbean.
ProfessorGolden’sreachhasextendedfar
beyondthescopeofRyersonandToronto.In2007,
aftermeetingKenyanstudentTerianoLesancha
whohadcometoCanadafromKenyaandhad
beenabandonedbyherCanadiansponsor,Jean
Goldenwasinspiredtocreatesolutionstohelp
Lesanchacontinueherstudies.Sheworkedwith
membersoftheRyersoncommunitytosupportmembersoftheRyersoncommunitytosupport
Lesancha.Fiveyearslater,accompaniedbyUniver-
sityPresidentSheldonLevy,JeanGoldenper-
formedaConvocationceremonyforLesanchain
herKenyanvillage.ProfessorGoldenwasalso
instrumentalinfosteringarelationshipbetween
RyersonandWorldVision.Jointly,thetwoinstitu
tionswillsponsoracross-Canadadocumentary
aboutthisMaasaistudent’sjourney,aspartofan
educationalfundraisingeffortforthisimpover-
ishedarea.Ryersonhasbeguntheprocessofedu-
cationaltransformationinthisregionofKenyaand
ishelpingtheLoodariakMaasaiWomen’sBeading
Collectivetodevelopabusinessplanforthefair
marketingoftheirbeadsinKenyaandinCanada.
In2012ProfessorGoldencreatedaninstitu-
tionalrelationshipbetweenRyersonUniversityand
theEveryChildCountsSchoolforchildrenwith
specialneedsintheNorthernBahamas.Seven
SocialWorkandEarlyChildhoodEducationplace-
mentandvolunteerstudentsaccompaniedherto
theBahamastoassistintheschoolandincommu-
nitydevelopmentprojects.Duringherwinter2013
sabbatical,ProfessorGoldenworkedwithtwenty
RyersonstudentstohelptheECCSchooldevelop
anassistedlivingcenter,avocationaltraining
center,communitydisabilityawarenesseduca-
tionalprogramsandsecureNGOfundingforthe
school.ShewantstoexpandtheProjecttoinclude
Sociologystudentsin2014.
JeanGoldenhasbeenaconstantinspiration,
generouscolleague,andpassionateeducatorin
theSociologyDepartment.Hercolleaguesandstu-

ogyafterathirty-oneyearcareerofteachingexcellence,educational
leadershipandinnovativeresearch.
ProfessorGillinarrivedatRyersonUniversityin1982,having
previouslytaughtatMcMasterUniversity,Mt.AllisonUniversity,and
twoAmericanfour-yearcolleges.DuringtheseearlyyearsatRyerson
heplayedanimportantpartinthedevelopmentofthe rstGerontol-
ogycoursesofferedthroughContinuingEducation,includingthe
creationofaCerticateGerontologyprogram.Hewasthe rstCoor-
dinatorofthisprogram,servedonitscurriculumcommittee,taught
coursesandconductedresearchformanyyearsinthisnewlyemergcoursesandconductedresearchformanyyearsinthisnewlyemerg-
ing eldofsocialgerontology.
Asateacher,ProfessorGillintaughtintheGerontologypro-
gramandtheArtsandContemporaryStudiesprogram,aswellas
Sociology.Forhim,teachingistheopportunitytochallengestudents
todeepentheirunderstandingofthemselvesandtobroadentheir
perspectiveofthesocialworldinwhichtheylive,fromtheirfamilies
totheirchosenprofessionstothecontemporaryglobalissues.He
enjoysbeingaroundotherenthusiasticlearnersandbeingableto
encouragethem.Heextendedthisteachingtothementoringofhisencouragethem.Heextendedthisteachingtothementoringofhis
sociologicalcolleaguesthroughthemyriadchangingstructural,cur-
ricularandSRCrequirementsatRyerson.
ProfessorGillinhimselfisa‘lifelonglearner,’asisreectedinthe
variousareasofhisformaleducationwhichincludenotonlySociol-
ogybutalsoSocialandPoliticalThought,LegalandEthicalStudies,
Gerontology,andDisputeResolution.Throughouthiscareerhewas
activelyengagedinandastrongsupporterofcontinuingeducation.
Hebroughtthisbreadthofknowledgetohisstudents,hisacademic
leadershipandhisresearch.Mostrecentlyhehasexaminedtherole
andimportanceofacademicfreedomintheacademy.andimportanceofacademicfreedomintheacademy.
In1986-91andagainin2006-2011,ProfessorGillinservedas
theChairoftheDepartmentofSociology,theonlydepartment
membertoholdthispositionintwoverydifferentdecadesofsub-
stantivecurricular,staffingandstructuralchanges.The1980’swasthe
decadeofcurricularexpansionforSociologyintomoreprogrammes
atRyerson,partiallyduetothenewtripartitecurriculumwhich
requiredallRyersonstudentstotakensocialscienceandhumanities
coursesintheirprogrammes.TheSociologyDepartmentincreaseditscoursesintheirprogrammes.TheSociologyDepartmentincreasedits
courseofferings,withanemergingfocusonmediaandanexpansion
offeministandanti-racismcontentinexistingcourses.Thisdecade
wasalsoatimeoftenurestreamhiringfreezesandarapidgrowthin
part-timecontractlabour.From2006-2001,ProfessorGillinledthe
SociologyDepartmentintothenewSociologyBAdegreepro-
gramme,withsubstantialnumbersofnewhires,curriculargrowth
andtenuredecisions.Underhisleadershipduringboththesetwo
decadesProfessorGillinsolidiedtheDepartment’scommitmentto
criticalsociology,socialjusticeandcommunityactivism.
BeinginvolvedinacademicadministrationbroughtforProfes-
sorGillinadifferenttypeofrewardthanteachingprovides.Itwasa
chancetoservehiscolleagues,tohelpcolleaguesshapetheirlivesin
waysthatthey ndmeaningfulandsatisfying,toworktowardarrang-
ingcourseloadsthatreectwhatcolleaguesaremostinterestedin
teaching,tosupporttheirintellectualinterestsandacademicinitia-
tives,toencouragetheirresearchandscholarship,andtourgeabal
ancedlifestyle.
ProfessorGillinsharedhisinstitutionalwisdomandmediation
skillsonmanydepartmental,facultyanduniversitycommittees.
Someofthemostimportantcommitteeswerehiringcommittees,
bothforSociologyandforotherdepartmentsandprograms.Inthis
workhewasengagedinaprocesswhichhadaprofoundandlong-
termeffectonstudents,facultycolleaguesandindividuals.Boththe
qualityofthestudentexperienceandoffacultycollegialitywereand
stillaredirectlyaffected.In1988,hewaselectedbyitscommittee
memberstochairtheFacultyAdvisoryCommitteetotheBoardinits
PresidentialSearch.Inthisrolehepresented,explainedand
defendedtheCommittee’srecommendationstothewholeBoard.
Duringthe1988-89,healsochairedthePlanningandPrioritiesAdvi-
soryCommittee(PPAC)ofAcademicCouncil,ofwhichhewasa
memberelectedbyfellowChairsintheFacultyofArts.Working
closelywithotherPPACcommitteememberstheydevelopedrecom-
mendationstoestablishopportunitiestoenhancelearningand
teachinginaprogrammaticfashionatRyerson.Thiswastheoriginat-
inginstitutionalsparkforthemanylearningandteachinginitiatives
whichhavesubsequentlydeveloped.ForProfessorGillin,committee
workisthebackboneoftheUniversity,themeansofcollegialdeci-
sionmaking,suchashiringcolleagues,evaluatingandrewarding
students,developingcurriculum,andshapingprogramsandinstitu-
tionalsupportsforstudentsandfacultymembers.
