Mitotic Regulation, Schizosaccharomyces pombe (Fission Yeast)
Semester 1: Created 2 Fission yeast Mutants using multiple molecular biology techniques including PCR, Primer
Design, Gel Electrophoresis, Sequencing, and transformation. Findings described in a paper.
Semester 2: Given scientific literature pertaining to new findings in mitotic regulation is Fission yeast and asked
how to examine the results. I developed an experiment to test the question, which included creating multiple
Fission yeast Mutants using multiple molecular biology techniques including PCR, Primer Design, Gel
Electrophoresis, Sequencing, and transformation. In continuation of the experiments I used selective screening to
identify and characterize the strains created and analyzed the effects of the mutations using immune blotting and
fluorescence microscopy that I quantified and presented to multiple research labs associated with the Hauf Lab.
Semester 3: Continued with the project from the semester before. In addition I was awarded the Robert Jones
Undergraduate Research Excellence Award, for the project I proposed for this semester. Along with the
Investigation of protein level regulation, using similar techniques as previous semester as well as CRISPR Cas9, a
poster highlighting my past, present and future work at the Hauf lab was created and presented at the
Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Conference of Virginia Tech.

Principles of Biology UTA
Fall 2014, Spring 2015, Fall 2015
As a UTA for Principles of Biology I oversaw a group of 20 – 30 in an “Active Classroom” environment. This meant
that during class time the students would break up into small groups to complete an in-class assignment and I
assisted them in completing it. I was also responsible for proctoring exams and grading the in-class assignments.
A weekly TA meeting was also associated with the experience during which I lead the discussion about the
upcoming classwork on multiple occasions.
