Annotated Bibliography: Globalization and Resource Extraction
This is my collection of my personal work I’ve completed during my time at Humboldt State
University. The following entries have been used as sources for several important projects I’ve
completed, as well as several for personal reading and direction. In this bibliography I have several
subsections divided into news articles, journal articles, and one interview for my monograph used for my
Ethnography class. The journal articles I have mentioned below are further divided by project in which I
included them in, they are specific projects in several different classes in anthropology, where they are
listed.
My own personal direction and style of anthropology is in a community development and natural
resource capital extraction focus. I have pursued much research in the realm of both sustainable
resource extraction and globalization’s effect on underdeveloped communities. My 16 week course on
Anthropology of Development was one of my favorite courses in the discipline, and the research
conducted on foreign investment in the oil industry was a rewarding topic. More recently was my 16
week course in Ethnography; where I bit off more than I could chew in my research on the Arcata
Theatre Lounge in Arcata, CA. I was to research the use of space in the Arcata Theatre Lounge, and
take specific focus on the changing styles of public and private events in the same location, as well as
look into the building’s status as a community anchor, a symbol of Arcata itself. I acquired a wealth of
data, but ultimately had trouble in analyzing and quantifying the data. It was a rewarding experience
though, these were important skills to learn if I am ever to take cultural knowledge and accounts

2. seriously.
Looking back on the work I have done is an interesting journey in itself. Several of the entries
have been made for my “Monster Myth” project when I went to look at the pervasiveness of the
frightening or comforting monster motif in different cultures. Many sources modify and inspire my
interests with the discipline, and I find my writing style and personal views have changed. I need to
continue reading scholarly books and subscribe to journals to further my nascent understanding of the
discipline. Despite this have given myself a direction for my life I want to pursue.

This was my formal personal interview with Lara Cox, the management arm of the current ATL
for my ethnographic project on the Arcata Theatre Lounge. A 22 minute interview noted down on Feb
29th.

Morey, Jennifer. "Arcata Theatre Sold, to Become Concert and Stage Venue." Times­Standard

This was an article in the Times­Standard in 2002 when the dilapidated Arcata Theatre Lounge
got sold to a new group who wanted to turn it into a concert hall, a piece of the information on the
building halfway through its current transition.
Murray, Tom E. Movie Theatres of Humboldt County. Rep. Eureka: Tom E. Murray, 1992.
Print.
Tom Murray wrote a compilation report of theatres of all types within Humboldt county.
Murray only mentions the Arcata Theatre in one page over many, but he gives a more well rounded
sense of the nightlife in Arcata through the early part of the 20th century, as well as the types of shows
produced at this time.

`This was a report done by Katie Stanton, a historian, on the beginnings of the Arcata Theatre,
as well as wide photos of the interior and exterior of the building and original art­deco identity as a
nightclub of the 1930’s and 40’s. This brought an account of the old club before its change in the
modern age.

The Arcata Theatre was resold to the Cox family in 2002, and in so being, a lot more press
about the building was released by the Times­Standard. This was important for its references.

background information on Hypatia herself; where she comes from, her father, her teachers, her school
of thought and how she lived in Alexandria. This is a reputable source and will use this for most of my
background information.

This article is a peer reviewed journal of the mathematical achievements Hypatia made in her
life, Michael Deakin is a renowned scholar on the subject and I will use some of his work to go into

Civilization­­Christian, Islamic, and Judaic­­ from Constantine to Dante: A.D. 325­1300. Vol. 3. New

Will Durant’s massive history volume collects the happenings and biographies of the major
characters and states during this time period and condenses it into one massive volume of the end of
classical antiquity and start of the dark ages and into the middle ages. This holds value to my concluding
paragraphs of the “bigger picture”.

This book I found on google books will enlighten me on the different trends that were happening
throughout not just Alexandria but the greater Roman Empire as a whole. The different ideas which
were being abandoned and new ones becoming more popular. This source will show me the unfortunate
path of events which led to Hypatia’s murder and her school of Neo­Platonist thought to fall apart
completely.

This radio segment holds a conversation between two scholars, one of which Michael Deakin
(an author on her mathematical success) on the topic of Hypatia and gets to be more personal, they
mention her private life and her scandals, her lovers and rivals, and perhaps why she was killed in a
fervor by the Christian mob responsible for her death.

This book I found on Google Books will provide me with needed information on Alexandrian
intellectual life. This will help me reveal how students and teachers in those days acted, and will provide
me with a framework to how a community of students and teachers, of them many different faiths, fell on
one another.

Joshi writes about H.P. Lovecraft’s Weird Tales and includes a dissection of the Cthulhu
mythos, its tropes and trivia, the life of Lovecraft himself, and his reasons for writing as he did. Provides
a biographical account of his work.
Lovecraft, H. P., David E. Schultz, and S. T. Joshi. Lord of a Visible World: an
Autobiography in Letters. Athens: Ohio UP, 2000. Print.
This was a personal resource as a collection of letters sent to and from Lovecraft from his
friends, family, and colleagues. There’s a deep level of originality, and the genuine letters have lots of
detail of his mind.

Print.
The Old Testament, collection of religious stories familiar to western civilization. I included some
quotes from the book of Job, containing descriptions of prehistoric monsters from the Jewish faith.

of the Congo. This article goes into depth on the leaders, reasons for conflict, the chance for real

Diamond, Jared M. Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. New York: Viking,

Diamond points out references to agricultural and ecological destruction due to malpractice of
humans in working with the indigenous environment. The work provides valuable insight into negative
globalization outcomes.
Liu, Morgan Y. Central Asia in the Post–Cold War World. Annual review of Anthropology,
Vol 40.: Annual Review of Anthropology.: 40 Pgs: 115­131. Oct. 2011.
Central Asia has been changed by a recent shift in socio­economic landscape following the
collapse of the Soviet Union. This is a strategic document to my personal anthropology of political

Political pressure was the overwhelming factor in the foreign company race for Sudanese oil.
Talisman, Chevron, Lundin, and OMV are or were players in the oil extraction of Sudan. China
however, bested all of them by cozying up to the riverine elite of Sudan’s capitol.

China has now surpassed the World Bank in lending to the developing world. The loans China
gives out are in return not for cash, but for natural resources and good­faith measures between
governments. In this way, China may be undermining the effectiveness of the World Bank, and is an
attractive alternative for developing countries.

are set to expand.

the Soviet and post­Soviet eras.

Russia is the largest exporter of energy to the European Union. This entry is important to my
paper because it shows the amount of cooperation the Russian and European authorities are willing to
negotiate, while Russia will bully its provinces from the former Warsaw Pact and Eastern bloc, it will
delightfully agree with many proposals by European Powers.
Ferguson, James. "Seeing Like an Oil Company: Space, Security, and Global Capital in

Ferguson provides discourse on the minimizing structure that neoliberalism forces upon states
eager to join the global economy, which causes unintended domestic crisis. Oil is seen as particularly
altering to the ideal neoliberal world.

Petrostate is a well written account of Goldman’s inspection of the Russian state control of oil
and pipelines to the European continent. Since the seizure of Gazprom (the leading oil company) by the
Russian government, centralized economic power had multiplied in the hands of the Russian executive
branch.

This paper goes into European fears and the reasons for allying themselves to certain groups
such as NATO. This paper will be vital because it shows what the EU will never ever gamble with;
another world war. Any kind of cohesion and smooth flow with powerful Western and Eastern
neighbors is crucial for European survival.

Russia has been building strategic pipelines in the Baltic sea to bypass all border crossings, so
they may shut off certain countries access to gas and oil to their whims. The Russians also have been
delaying pipelines to South Asia and trying to compete with the pipelines existing within Iran, Iraq, and
Syria.

Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, a nearly 10 year period of economic deflation
occurred in the Central Asian and Eastern European countries adjusting to newfound independence.
During the 2008 financial crisis however, the area suffered terribly, allowing Russia to take control. This
is important to my paper because there had to be a reason why these states have lost their eminent
status as independent countries.

thought. Russia and China together represent a significant supply and demand, as well as a large labor
force.

to all countries downstream.
