One of the main problems in the translation industry today is the lack of benchmarking. The output of MT engines cannot be compared to industry averages or standards because these are not yet available. Automated scores are meaningless outside the “laboratory”. At the same time, buyers of translation services are increasingly interested in translated content of different quality levels. They want to save on some content and invest more in other. They also want to know how the different engines are performing on different content in different language pairs. How can we be sure MT providers deliver what they are paid for? Benchmarking MT engines and creating a library of MT use cases are one way to move forward. Using industry benchmarking based on evaluation and productivity data is another option. One way or another, buyers need to be able to compare and benchmark MT solutions to make informed decisions.
Post-editors are an important partner in the MT flow – they are the last line of defense for a quality output and can provide valuable feedback for the improvement of the system. However, it is a known industry fact that their rate of attrition is much higher than for “traditional” translators. There are multiple reasons for this (throughput estimation, content difficulty, MT-specific requirements), and there are also new, innovative solutions based on real-life experience that we can implement to facilitate their work and keep them engaged.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a multinational trade agreement between 12 Pacific Rim nations that has significant implications for Taiwan’s economic future. Assessment is the cash nexus of learning – it is where the payoff is for our students, where all their effort is rewarded with marks or grades.
When we design our assessment, we indicate to our students what is important and what they should focus on. In this presentation, Ann will explore a number of theories that focus on assessment design such as:
Constructive alignment – why aligning what we teach, with the way we teach it, with the way we assess it is important
Supporting learning – how assessment supports learning and how it is central to student learning
Authentic assessment – including the issues of assessment design and workload from the perspective of both students and markers
