In Europe 84 million people are estimated to be affected by mental illnesses, which are thus becoming a major issue. Stress is often the trigger for the arise of such illnesses: in fact, it has been observed that prolonged mental stress can impair Autonomic Nervous System’s functionalities and - in particular - the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches.
The indicator most often employed to evaluate such balance is the Heart Rate Variability, which accounts for the capability of the ANS to regulate the cardiac rhythm. This mechanism has been observed to significantly vary according to sex, as well as the predisposition to different mental illness and as the reaction to psychopharmaceuticals. In such a context, understanding how - and if- sex differences account for a different impact on mental stress on HRV may help in providing specific therapies, as they would be targeted precisely for the individual based on their gender. This would allow a more accurate and personalized approach towards mental illnesses.
To do so, we confronted the HRV - measured on 24-hours ECG recordings - of working man and women and their perceived stress, assessed through clinical standard surveys.

- sono adequado e por que é tão importante;
- o uso de melatonina, cientificamente validada como tendo atividade antiviral (referências citadas);
- a importância de diminuir o estresse e técnicas para fazê-lo;
- a necessidade de "comer frutas e vegetais" como sua mãe e sua avó ensinaram devido à ingestão de carotenóides e antioxidantes ((referências citadas);

The use of medical technology has grown dramatically over the last decade, according to the federal government's annual health report.
That's just one finding in the massive "Health, United States, 2009," a snapshot of Americans' health, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention compiles yearly as "an essential step in making sound health policy and setting research and program priorities."
This year's edition, the 33rd, includes a special section on medical technology, which includes procedures, tests, drugs, devices, and support systems such as computerized records. The principal findings in this section include:
* The use of MRI, CT, and PET imaging soared during the past decade. The number of such imaging studies either ordered or provided by physician offices and hospital outpatient departments more than tripled; those ordered or provided by emergency departments quadrupled.
* The rate of knee replacement surgery performed in patients aged 45 years and older rose 70% during the same interval, from 26 to 45 per 10,000 population. The rate of total hip replacement surgery increased by 33%, and that of partial hip replacements increased by 60%.
* The rate of angioplasty without stent placement declined by 80% during the past decade. Drug-eluting stents have rapidly replaced bare-metal stents and were used in 75% of angioplasties in 2006.
* The number of assisted reproductive technology cycles doubled during the past decade, with the fastest rate of growth occurring in women older than 40 (11% per year).
* The rate of outpatient upper endoscopies rose by 90%, and the rate of outpatient colonoscopy tripled during the same interval.
* The use of diabetes drugs among patients aged 45 and older increased approximately 50%, and that of statins soared 10-fold in the past decade.
* The percentage of people taking at least one prescription drug during the preceding month rose from 38% in the 1980s and 1990s to 47% in recent years. The percentage taking three or ...

With conventional allopathic medicine, when we present our symptoms to our doctors we are hoping for a solution. What we often receive is a diagnosis accompanied by a prescription to relieve our symptoms, and we are sent home. However, symptoms are the body’s way of telling us that something is out of balance; similar to the warning light that pops up on the dashboard of our cars when something is wrong.

A high-strain job is defined as having high required effort and low task discretion. It is important for well-being and health, according to the Karasek demand-control model. The definition of low discretion is “at or below median”. High required effort is defined to be those who “strongly agree” that their job requires them to work very hard. With this definition, the proportion of high strain jobs rose in this period from a small beginning, roughly 1 in 11 jobs in 1992, to approximately 1 in 6 jobs (men) and 1 in 5 jobs (women) by 2001. After 2001 the proportion of ‘high-strain jobs’ remained stable for men but for women it rose still further to encompass a quarter of jobs. A remarkably similar growth pattern is found in Sweden, with the rise of high-strain jobs being more persistent for women than for men (Wikman, 2005). It is also interesting to note the findings of Gorman and Kmec (2007), that both in the US and in the UK women’s work effort is greater than men’s, which, they argue, reflects stricter performance standards for women.
