The ancient Egyptians placed items in pharaohs' tombs because they strongly believed in an afterlife and that whatever was buried with them would be available to use in the afterlife. They mummified pharaohs after death to preserve their bodies for the afterlife, as Egyptians spent much of their lives preparing for the afterlife since most people only lived to around 40 years old on average.
