Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and can cause death if not treated promptly with adrenaline. It is caused by the activation of mast cells and basophils through allergen-specific IgE antibodies, which leads these cells to release histamine, tryptase, and cytokines when reexposed to the allergen. Anaphylaxis has a prevalence of 5 to 15 per 100,000 people but is often unrecognized and untreated.
