Jeff Nielson of STOCKHOUSE interviews Gorden Glenn, CEO of Minnova Corp. and learns about the PL Gold Mine re-start and the companies strategy to advance the project to production.

PE929 Marginal Offshore Field DevelopmentpetroEDGE
Marginal offshore oilfield development requires more careful risk management than more economically robust field developments. As such, project management of marginal field development also requires an additional degree of scrutiny, particularly in regard to project drivers. Any adverse effects to these drivers, such as cost blowouts and schedule overruns will likely result in commercial failure. However, the most important project driver is related to reserves or specifically the oil recoverable by individual wells. Failure of reservoir well performance, for whatever reasons tends to have a devastating effect.
The course commences with the principles of project management, including project drivers and economic considerations, and definitions of marginal fields. Secondly, the three project elements are addressed: reservoirs, facilities and wells, paying particular attention to uncertainties, options, design and risks. Thirdly, the course covers management processes, including tollgating and post-implementation reviews, as well as cost estimating and control, and schedules. Finally, the course covers economic evaluation aspects; project risks and analysis; and examples of project failure.

the board on strategy, project sanction, Business plans, organizational policies. Acting
Chairman of the internal sustainability committee responsible for developing and coordinating
the implementation of the sustainability agenda across the organisation.
Leader of the Gas business unit accountable for HSE, P&L, Business Strategy, Budgeting,
and Development of a 1 Tcf tight gas reservoir by integrating Subsurface, Drilling, Petroleum
engineering including Hydrofrac operations, Projects, production operations, commercial and
JV management.
o Identified a strategic and business opportunity in converting a gas field used for captive
consumption to commercial production
o Successfully led the ~US$500MM field development from Concept to FID for
production of 25,000boepd, managing both internal and external JV approvals in
record time. Subsequently led the development optimization initiative resulting in
~20% reduction in development costs.
o Successfully increased production 3 fold to ~7500boepd by debottlenecking the
existing facility and pipeline.
2. o Led the execution of a multi well hydro- frac program resulting in over 100% increase
in individual well productivity and a 30% increase in overall expected ultimate recovery
and >50% increase in hydro-frac operational efficiency.
Director Subsurface, 2008-2014
Cairn India Ltd
Head Reservoir Development (2008-2010)
Technical Leadership
Leading a multi-disciplinary subsurface department of +130 professionals responsible for
field development planning and reservoir management of all Cairn assets
Responsible for the development of a highly skilled subsurface function to meet the
aggressive future growth requirements of the company
Accountable for reserves addition and delivery of annual internal and external reserve
reviews and reporting.
Part of the senior leadership team involved in technical, organizational and strategic decision
making. Active involvement in corporate planning and strategy and investment relations.
Greenfield developments
Led the execution of multi-billion dollar developments of three major onshore medium
viscous, waxy oil fields in Rajasthan with a total reserves plus resource base of ~1 billion
barrels with current production ~200,000bopd ramping up from a standing start in 2009. This
includes Mangala, the largest oil discovery in the world in 2004.
Strategized and executed the overall ramp up of the Mangala Field to 150,000 bopd from an
initial FDP approval of 100,000 bopd. Identified production enhancement opportunities in
Aishwariya field from 10,000bopd to 30,000bopd.
Delivered development plans of around 10 oil and gas fields, including tight oil and gas fields.
Technology applications
Led the Rajasthan EOR subsurface team and managed the design and execution of a
chemical EOR Polymer/ASP pilot in the Mangala reservoir. The EOR pilot began within one
year of field production startup and was successfully completed within two years.
Following the successfulEORpolymerpilot which resulted in a ~10% increase in the recovery
factor over waterflood, delivered full-field Field Development Plans for the two largest fields
(Mangala and Bhagyam) in Rajasthan that resulted in reserves addition of ~100mmboe. Full-
field polymer flood operational in Mangala since 2015, within five years of production startup.
Introduced 4D seismic technology, obtained external and internal approvals through detailed
techno-commercial feasibility studies. The infill drilling based on the 4D survey was
successful in adding ~5mmboe of reserves.
Spectral decomposition for delineation of thin sands and successfulexecution of multiple infill
drilling campaigns in a predominantly gas producing field that resulted in additional oil
reserves of 35mmbbls
Led implementation of Digital Oil field data acquisition systems in multiple assets
3. Reservoir management
Managed a growing production base of +225,000bopd from all assets predominantly under
waterflood .
Led reservoir management efforts for all producing fields in Rajasthan focused on
implementing sound reservoir management practices in varied type of reservoirs: fluvial
sandstone reservoirs under waterflood, marine shoreface sands under waterflood with an
EUR of over 55%, thin tidal channel sands, tight reservoirs.
Led multiple successful infill drilling campaigns resulting in acceleration of production and
increased recovery.
