While not acutely toxic, long-term exposure to these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can have compounding health effects due to their ability to cause irritation and potentially cancer. Three techniques used to treat wastewater from paint industries are biodegradation using microbes, chemical coagulation using substances like alum, and cross-flow microfiltration using semipermeable membranes.
