American National Government “Liberty is to Faction as Air is to Fire”
PLURALISM
Pluralism is by definition: a condition or system in which many groups interests or ideas co-exist in a
nation and share political power. In theory, it is the foundation of a free thinking democratic society. The
idea that persons or groups of people can exist in civility with competing ideas, and have them to condense
into one cohesive societal structure; is precisely what forms our nation and our constitutions foundation.
That compression, as in coals to diamonds; or coming together of ideas to form a United States of America,
from a flurry of combined thought processes; is the very essence of a pluralistic society; or Pluralism.
An interest group by definition is: an organized group of individuals or organizations that makes policy-
related appeals to government, & they are certainly necessary;but the question to be askedis. Atwhat point
do they become toxic or dangerous? Political Action Committees also known as Super PACs contribute
large amounts of revenue to political parties; with the belief that by assisting their candidates political party
in ways not involving the actualrunning of the electoral voting campaign process itself, they will ultimately
have the candidate to be elected to office. In that, are they serving the interests of society or of their
particular faction itself? “Liberty is to faction what air is to fire”- Dr. Kristen Allen, is the title of this
proposed assessment. I agree that it is in that, Liberty or freedom of expression fuels faction in the same
way that oxygen through air fuels a robust fire. The right to assemble and become a collective voice is a
fundamental declaration of our constitution in the literal form. Free speech and the evolution of different
ideas is what pluralism represents; but at what point or is there a point when it becomes unhealthy. Interest
Groups promote their ideas through an agenda based campaign not involving the candidate, but is it all
purely economic at the end of the day. Political Parties have built in financial & other types of restraints
that reduce the likely hood of a purchased elected official. Is the reasoning behind this act appropriate; &
is it an adequate solution? The NRA,which I am a member of, has a primary goal of protecting our second
2. amendment rights stating, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right
of the people to keep & bear arms, shall not be infringed.”; whose primary focus is in protecting our second
amendment rights involving the right to bear arms. I am a staunch supporter of this approach & the of the
second amendment itself. Peace through strength best describes my position.
A political party by definition is: An organized group that attempts to influence government by electing
its members to office. They are teams of actual politicians, activists & interest group constituents. Its
primary focus is to enhance the actual election process directly through & of its candidate being elected to
office. Doing the actual processes such as getting out the voter block and making the transition from the
podium to the polls & the couch to the voting booth as simple and effortless as possible. They also perform
the actualfunction of recruiting a suitable candidate & preparing them for a potential run for office.Political
parties have a broader sweeping job that differentiates their existence from interest groups. They have a
broader base which also brings about more issues to address. Unlike an interest group which has a more
specific goals or problem. I’m a member of the Republican Party as well as the national Rifle Association
(NRA). The duality of my stance also provides me assistance & protection under a broader umbrella.
Being a NRA member as well as a Republican Party member allows me access to both political parties
and interest groups privileges; & the ability to serve a vital role in the expansion & preservation of our
democratic American society as we know it; possibly even the world wide political forum. Without their
existence,we would have no true avenue asa whole to ensure that our voices are being heard in our society,
as well as those around the world. In any debate or clashing of ideas you will always have the inevitable
gathering of individuals for the purpose of power brokering. As stated in the text of the Bible, arguably the
most influential book ever written. It speaks of the gathering of individuals in God’s name and the principle
of power that it evokes. “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am.”- Mathew 18:20; The
Right to assemble is not a Constitutional Right by happenstance; as stated in the First Amendment that
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise
thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,or of the press;or the right of the people peaceablyto assemble,
3. and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”- The First Amendment. There truly is power
in numbers. It’s a factual, fundamental principal. Political parties and interest groups simply serve as a
tangible translation of a fundamental fact.
“Madison saw factions as inevitable due to the nature of man – that is, as long as men hold differing
opinions, have differing amounts of wealth and own differing amount of property, they will continue to
form alliances with people who are most similar to them and they will sometimes work against the public
interest and infringe upon the rights of others. He thus questions how to guard against those dangers”.-
James Madison, Federalist NO. 1; James Maddison’s assessment of factions I believe to be accurate. The
nature of man will bring about factions. Plurality is the solution. The ability to exist as a nation with
competing ideas & still be a nation.
