WHAT IS
NPTEL ?
 Joint initiative by seven IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur,
Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee) and IISc
(Bangalore); Headquarters at IIT Madras.
 Funded by ministry of education, Govt. of India
 Launched in 2003.
 Began online certification courses in 2014.
 Largest online repository of courses in various fields,
including engineering, sciences, humanities and
management.
NPTEL
MISSION : to make quality education accessible and
affordable.
CONTRIBUTIONS :
 Democratizing Education – uses Massive Open Online
Courses (MOOCs) to provide IIT level content to anyone with
an internet connection.
 Flexible Learning – self-paced learning with pre-recorded
lectures and assignments or students and professionals
 Enhanced Employability - strengthen fundamental skills,
with optional certification rom IIT/IISc boosting resume
value.
KEY
CHALLENGES
 Low completion rates
 Motivation and feedback : difficult to keep learners
engaged without direct interaction. Limited interaction hinders
doubt clearing and feedback.
 Digital Divide : people, especially in rural areas, lack
reliable internet and suitable devices.
 Digital Literacy : some lack the skill to navigate online
platforms.
 Technical Issue : system breakdown, unreliable network
or devices.
 Language Barrier : primary language of instruction is
English; which can be a barrier or some students.
