The Flammulated Owl is a small owl with a chestnut brown facial disc and greyish brown rim around its dark brown eyes and bill. It has a wingspan of 13-14 cm and length of 16-17 cm. Its diet consists mostly of insects, spiders, and beetles. The Flammulated Owl lives in tree cavities or nest boxes and communicates with a deep woop, boo-boot sound when mating, or meows like a kitten when scared. Females lay 2-4 eggs which she incubates for 3-4 weeks while the male sings to attract her, and then the owlets are fed by their parents for the next 3-5 weeks.
