1. PRESS RELEASE
18 August 2014
Runners from across Kent raise thousands for Porchlight at Mount
Ephraim 10k this weekend
Location - Mount Ephraim Gardens, Hernhill, Faversham, ME13 9TX
Date - Sunday, 17th August 2014
Runners from across Kent took part in the annual 10k run from Mount Ephraim this
Sunday, 17th
August. Over 150 runners took part to help raise money for Porchlight,
a Kent charity, which helps rough sleepers and the homeless in Kent.
Porchlight are pleased that they have managed to raise a few thousand pounds
from people sponsoring the runners and are looking forward to using these
donations to help reduce homelessness.
The race, which started at 10.30 began in the beautiful Mount Ephraim Gardens
and continued through for 10 kilometres along Kent’s scenic countryside.
Nicholas Mooney who ran for Porchlight says ‘It was a nice route apart from the hill
at four miles which sapped away my collective energy; it was nice that the sun
came out for the start of the race just as everyone got to the start line.’
He adds ‘according to my watch I completed the race in 55m41s from start line to
finish line, keeping that in mind and the fact that it took 15 seconds to get to the
start line as there were a lot of runners there my official time was 55:56 which was a
few minutes off a personal best. My fastest 10k was sort during the Brighton half
marathon in February this year, but Mount Ephraim was considerably hillier!’
‘It was nice seeing a few other people running for Porchlight too, although we
didn't get an opportunity to really say hello. As of a few minutes ago my
fundraising total (including gift aid) was £118.75 with donations from friends and
colleagues.’
2. The winner of the race was Jonathan Escalante-Phillips, a runner from Cambridge &
Colridge Athletic Club. Jonathan succeeded in finishing the race in a remarkable
time of 35:13 (0:35:13) holding a lengthy lead throughout the race.
All the runners were congratulated and thanked by Porchlight staff for taking part
in the race and look forward to seeing them again next year.

3. PRESS RELEASE
12 August 2014
Kent Union volunteers take part in the Porchlight Garden Project
to provide a better outdoor space for service users
Date - 12 August 2014
Locations – 38 Merchants Way, Canterbury, CT2 8PW
17 Wife of Bath Hill, Canterbury, CT2 8PQ
Kent Union volunteers worked alongside Porchlight staff to transform low support
hostels in Canterbury this Tuesday. The Porchlight Garden Project involved 15 staff
members, who were split in two groups. They worked across two houses in Wife of
Bath Hill and Merchants Way.
Kent Union volunteer Charlie Tivey says ‘Porchlight is a great charity for team-
building and I am happy to give back’
The project, which started at 1.30 to 4.30, consisted of volunteers working hard at
cutting overgrown grass and creating a better outdoor space for the people who
lived there.
Volunteer Shane Barragan says ‘our organisation does a lot of volunteering anyway
but we haven’t been volunteering too often as we don’t always have the time. So,
4. its summer and something came up, we thought why not? Never gardened before
but I’m enjoying it and I’d happily do it again.’
A resident at Wife of Bath Hill says ‘we now have an outdoor space that we can
actually use; up until now that garden has been pointless for us. I moved in two
years ago and it was already as you see it. As this is a low support house we haven’t
had the tools to fix it. This is used to be a home away from home but it doesn’t
really feel like it. More events like this would make my stay here a lot better.’
Levi, who is a resident from Merchants Way, says ‘I’m hoping to start my own
business. Porchlight has given me a great house, so this is a good start for me. At
first I didn’t like Canterbury but now I love the place! I’m looking forward to using
our new garden and keeping it clean.’
The winner of the project was announced by Porchlight Canterbury services
manager, Roger Jarrett. As the end of the day approached Roger revealed that
Merchants Way were the worthy winners and they were awarded a bench for their
renewed garden.
Both teams were thanked and congratulated for their hard work on the project.

Porchlight Profile: http://www.porchlight.org.uk/2014/08/18/21021/
About myself
Hello, my name is Megan and I am 20 years old. I am a summer intern for the non-profit
organisation Porchlight for the next seven weeks. I hope to learn more about public
10. relations and communications, in order for me to decide if I want to peruse this as a career
in the near future.
What am I studying at university?
I am studying Multimedia Journalism at Canterbury Christ Church University. I love the
diversity of the course, as it leaves plenty career options for me to peruse after.
How am I finding it so far?
I am enjoying meeting new people and expanding on my knowledge in the industry.
Having a variety of modules in the course has enabled me to explore different potentials for
careers and professions.
What have I been doing?
During my time at Porchlight I have been writing press releases for a variety of events and
challenges, hosted by the organisation. I attended my first event, which was the Porchlight
garden project and was assigned to take photos and get quotes from people who attended.
This is similar to what I have been doing as journalist at Christ Church but it allows me to
see it from a different perspective and gain new knowledge as to what it’s like being on the
other side of the industry.
What do I want to do?
There are many options for me after university; I am considering a Master’s Degree in
Public Relations or an internship in London. Right now I am eager to gain as much
experience as I can to help me with my decision.
What will my internship give me?
I believe a PR and communications professional should have the skills of a
journalist/photojournalist, along with a good understanding about how editors and
producers work. Working at Porchlight has given me further knowledge on these divisions,
which I hope to use for future employment. I’m hoping that the valuable experience gained
from this internship will help me going forward as the digital age continues to expand and
take over our lives both socially and in industry.
