The work of John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects (JFAK.net) begins with the premise that architecture has the power to positively transform individual and collective lives, as well as the responsibility to both sustain and improve the overall environment.
Alice Kimm (B.A. Cornell, M.Arch Harvard)
was born in Chicago and spent her high
school years in Seoul, Korea. Her work has been recognized with a Fulbright Scholarship, a National AIA award, multiple regional AIA awards including two Los Angeles AIA Decade Awards. She
is currently a Visiting Associate Professor
of Architecture at the University of
Southern California. See http://World-Architecture.com and the Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture.
Volodymyr Gogol provided a list of six projects including a biochemistry teaching lab at Syracuse University, a classical site in Italy, an environmental systems analysis of a building in New York City, digital fabrication, and a green supermarket in Brooklyn. The documents included diagrams, plans, and renderings related to each project.
Kauffmann Desert House by Richard NeutraNilay Shukla
The Kaufmann Desert House in Palm Springs, California was designed by Richard Neutra to integrate seamlessly with the desert landscape. The design uses straight lines and flat planes without curves to create a simple but sturdy structure. Large windows, ceilings, and overhangs connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing the desert environment into the home while protecting from harsh sunlight and winds. The open floor plan centers around a swimming pool that provides visual and thermal balance.
The Kaufmann Desert House designed by Richard Neutra in Palm Springs, California uses passive design strategies to remain cool in the harsh desert climate. The steel and glass construction is shaded by large cantilevered overhangs and uses thick stone walls to regulate indoor temperatures. Cross ventilation and airflow between connected indoor and outdoor spaces further cool the house. Landscaping with a central swimming pool and desert plants create microclimates that reduce heat island effects around the structure. Through these materials and design choices, Neutra created a thermally efficient home suited for life in the hot desert environment.
Postmodern architecture is a reaction and evolution to the modern architecture that came before it. Not only did designers begin to make use of new innovations, but at the same time they appropriated design elements from the past. Buildings became an eclectic mix of old and new as the old "Form follows function" mantra was forgotten. One of the iconic postmodern examples is the Sony Building in New York City.
As with many cultural movements, some of postmodernism's most pronounced and visible ideas can be seen in architecture. The functional and formalized shapes and spaces of the modernist movement are replaced by aesthetics: form is adopted for its own sake, and new ways of viewing familiar styles and space abound.
Classic examples of modern architecture are the Lever House and the Seagram Building in commercial space, and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright or the Bauhaus movement in private or communal spaces.
Transitional examples of postmodern architecture are the Portland Building in Portland, Oregon and the Sony Building in New York City, which borrows elements and references from the past and reintroduces color and symbolism to architecture.
Richard Neutra was a modernist architect known for blending art, landscape, and practical comfort in his domestic architecture. He gave careful attention to defining his clients' real needs regardless of the size of the project. Some of Neutra's most notable works included the Lovell House, Jardinette Apartments, Desert House, and Ayn Rand House. Neutra's company continues on today through his son Dion, keeping his vision of modern architecture alive.
Richard Neutra was an influential Austrian-American architect known for pioneering the International Style in the United States. He designed over 300 homes in California incorporating modernist designs with regional elements. Some of Neutra's most notable works included the Lovell Health House (1929), the first steel-frame house in America, and the Kaufmann Desert House (1946), considered a landmark of the International Style. Throughout his career, Neutra focused on understanding his clients' needs and incorporating natural elements like light, water, and landscaping into his minimalist and functional architectural designs.
University of Oregon Portland Architecture ProgramNancy Cheng
In Portland, University of Oregon connects Architecture students to professionals who are pioneering Eco-Districts, green buildings and design process innovation. Students can be immersed in sustainable communities where urban agriculture, composting, public transit and bicycling are the norm. They can work with national leaders in shaping how cutting edge-standards like the Living Building Challenge and Passive House can be applied to real-world situations. Instruction is at an advanced level as students arrive with basic training from schools like yours or the Eugene, OR campus.
For students who are eager to change the world, our program gives the the concepts, examples and contacts to make it happen, in a supportive hands-on atmosphere.

Building Information Modeling : What, Why, HowNancy Cheng
What is BIM? Why do we need it? How do we do it? A collection of graphic images explains the advantages of using a coordinated data-rich 3D model for design communication and collaboration.
"Skin, Frame and Sustainability" by Works Partnership ArchitectureNancy Cheng
This document summarizes the key metrics and design of a proposed high-density housing prototype organized around multiple courtyard layouts. The project aims to provide housing for families in an urban setting while creating green outdoor spaces. It analyzes the layout of different courtyard configurations and their impacts on metrics like unit mix, density, and efficiency. The document also explores arranging courtyard blocks in three-dimensional configurations to maximize sunlight access and mix housing types.
This document discusses Nancy Yen-wen Cheng's interests in media and design processes, with a focus on digital sketching, lighting visualization, digital fabrication, and virtual design studios. It also outlines some of her work with students on community design projects utilizing digital tools and online collaborations.
Depicting Daylight: Types of Multiple Image DisplayNancy Cheng
How can daylighting can be understood on the Web? Image size, sequence vs. simultaneity and interaction affect legibility. We formatted daylit interior graphics as image matrices, animations and Quicktime VR. After designers helped identify usability issues, we refined the alternatives, and characterized their attributes.
Viewers preferred interactively selecting a single large image from multiple thumbnails rather than two or more smaller still, animated or interactive views. Small multiples allow overview browsing to select choices for detailed study. Graphing interface, image and usability characteristics, shows how photo-realistic, symbolic and analytical images complement each other. so combinations promotes legibility. http://www.uoregon.edu/~design/nywc/pdf/replite.pdf
Cultivating Collaboration: lessons from cohousing studiosNancy Cheng
How can we achieve excellence in design collaborations? Cultivating social trust, organizing logistical aspects, supporting information flow are essential to any community effort. The need for ownership makes artistic collaborations different from others. The pitfalls of ego competition can be avoided by appropriate team size, task organization and fallback options. To negotiate design priorities, team members must use critical thinking. This presentation illustrates techniques for team-building with examples from my University of Oregon design studios focused on intentional communities. While the examples come from architectural design, the lessons are applicable to many types of collaboration that involve shared information about complex problems.
