Alex Southam originally trained as a lawyer but decided to pursue a career in film instead. He began by making music videos to learn the trade, taking on camera, editing, and lighting duties for his own videos. Now he has his own director of photography as he realized he couldn't do everything alone. Southam freelances for OB Management and prefers making music videos over commercials due to the greater artistic freedom in videos. He uses Vimeo to showcase his work as it has a higher status than YouTube. His breakthrough video for Alt-J's "Tessellate" had a £10,000 budget and was filmed entirely in one day with a large cast using adobe after effects.
