seat of Montgomery County. It is located on the
Alabama River southeast of the center of the state,
in the Gulf Coastal Plain. As of the 2010 Census,
Montgomery had a population of 205,764 making
it the second-largest city in Alabama,
after Birmingham, and the 103rd largest in the
United States. Montgomery is the primary city of
the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area,
which had a 2010 estimated population of 374,536.
It is the fourth-largest in the state and 136 th
among United States metropolitan areas.

• Hank Aaron: U.S. baseball player. A durable outfielder and
consistent hitter noted for his powerful wrists and explosive swing.
He became a member of the Milwaukee Braves farm system, during
his first season with the Braves he led the team in hits. He was the
National League's most valuable player in 1957 and he won three
Gold Gloves. In 1976 he became one of the first black executives in
the game, beginning a long tenure in the Atlanta Braves front office.
He also had a successful business career.
