This document discusses a study of open innovation through open APIs at news organizations. It examines four leading cases - NPR, New York Times, Guardian, and USA Today - that have implemented open APIs to speed up product development, find new revenue streams, leverage their brands, and build developer communities. While open APIs provide benefits, organizations also face internal cultural challenges to implementation. Overall, the study found that open innovation can help news organizations operate more efficiently and take advantage of ecosystem effects when their data is openly accessible through APIs on the web.
