The Akosombo Dam is located on the Volta River in Ghana. It was constructed between 1962-1972 to provide hydropower and was financed by Ghana, the World Bank, UK, and US (1). The dam created Lake Volta and supplies 85% of Ghana's electricity, boosting economic development (2). However, it displaced 80,000 people and decreased agricultural land, resulting in loss of livelihoods and increased poverty, diseases, and social issues for many communities (3). While the dam provided benefits, it also caused significant environmental, social, and economic challenges.
