From the
E DITOR
T
his may seem like a simple
question but it’s highly
underrated. It’s time we explore
the importance of checking
in with ourselves and ask the simple
yet crucial question, ’How am I feeling?’
We often get so caught up in our daily
routines and the demands of our work
that we forget to take a moment to reflect
on our emotional and mental wellbeing.
So much so, that most seem to be loosing
their mental orientation in the process.
In this fast paced life, it's easy to lose
sight of what really matters. We get
caught up in the endless cycle of work
and social media, always chasing after
the next big thing, comparing ourselves
to others, and constantly feeling the
pressure to achieve more. But in the end,
what does it all really mean?
Who cares what others are doing or
saying? We have one life to live, and it's up
to us to make the most of it on our own
terms. It's time to rediscover the simple
pleasures in life, to slow down and enjoy
the little things.
Whether it's reading a book on a lazy
summer afternoon or taking a long train
ride to an unknown destination, let's savor
these moments and cherish them. It's
important to break free from the constant
comparisons and unnecessary goals and
instead focus on what truly makes us
happy.
At the end of the day, it's not about what
we accomplish or how much money we
make. It's about the relationships we build,
the memories we create, and the impact
we have on the world around us.
As part of this reflection, we delve into the
topic of legalizing adoption in same-sex
marriages. We explore whether India is
ready for this important step and what it
means for all individuals seeking to start
a family. It's an essential conversation,
and we are proud to facilitate it in our
magazine.
In addition to this, we also bring you the
latest travel and food recommendations
to help you plan your next adventure and
satisfy your cravings. From local cuisine
to exotic destinations, we have it all
covered.
Finally, we have an exclusive interview
with our cover model and actor Akhil
Akkineni, who shares his thoughts
on dealing with the expectations and
comparisons that come with his family's
long-standing legacy in the film industry.
Akhil's insights remind us that we should
follow our hearts and break free from the
pressures and expectations that others
may have for us.
We hope you enjoy this issue and take a
moment to reflect on your emotional and
mental wellbeing. As always, we welcome
your feedback and suggestions.

How does it feel for you to make a comeback
on screen after a hiatus with Agent?
Well, it's been quite a journey to get to this
point, coming back to the screen after
one and a half years with a film like 'Agent'
compared to my previous work. As we
approach the release, the initial excitement
has faded away and nerves have started to
kick in. I've had a really intense promotion
schedule, but I'm still enthusiastic and
grateful for this opportunity. It's been a few
sleepless nights, and I'm feeling like a zombie,
but a very excited zombie at that. It's keeping
my nerves down, and I'm just happy to be
tired.
Could you share your preparation process
for your role as Agent? I've heard that you
gained 16 kgs for the role and also sustained
multiple injuries. Can you tell us more about
that?
I have to admit, the transformation for Agent
was a grueling experience for me. I had
initially thought it would take 3-4 months
to gain the necessary weight for the role,
but it ended up taking almost a year of
pushing myself to the limit in the gym. But
the discipline and focus required for the
transformation really helped me grow as a
person, beyond just the physical changes. The
movie itself was also a challenge to make,
I've had a really intense promotion
schedule, but I'm still enthusiastic and
grateful for this opportunity.

with high-octane action scenes shot all over India and abroad, spanning
over 100 days of shooting. But the whole team was dedicated to bringing
a thrilling and wild experience to the big screen, and if we can even
capture 50-60% of what we envisioned, it will be a real winner.

How do you cope with the added pressure of being from
a family with such a long-standing legacy in the film
industry? Despite your past cinema, do you still feel the
need to prove yourself?
I don’t let my family name weigh on my decisions or
aspirations. Of course, there’s added pressure that comes
with it, but I try not to overthink it. There are days when I
wonder if I’m carrying the legacy forward correctly or not,
but at the end of the day, I’m just trying to follow my heart
and do what I believe in. I don’t think my grandfather or
father would have wanted me to feel like I need to carry
the family legacy in a certain way. They became who
they are today by daring to do something different and
following their own paths. For me, it’s important to break
free and prove myself in my own right. That’s what I’m
focused on doing right now.
I don’t let my family name weigh
on my decisions or aspirations.
Of course, there’s added pressure
that comes with it, but I try not to
overthink it.

What are your thoughts on whether Agent aligns with
your earlier desire for serious and meaningful cinema,
despite your family's expectations for a big mass
launch?
That was a decade ago during the shooting of Manam.
However, over time, I realized that my comfort lies in the
action and commercial genres. For me, Agent has been
that film. While I do want to find space for progressive
cinema within the commercial barriers, I don't want to
regress and make the same old films that were made
ten years ago. I need to make an effort and bring
something new to the table. Agent is one step towards
that.

You come from a family of acting veterans.
How involved is your family? Do you go to
them for advice on scripts or your choices?
I prefer to keep my major decisions in life to
myself, even though I do take advice from my
parents as any son would. It's a conscious
decision to stay away from my family making
my decisions for me. I want to be responsible
for my own failures or success. Growing
up from a guy to a man, I believe taking
responsibility for my life is an important
part of that process. Of course, there are
times when I feel the pressure to please
my extended family and friends who have
become pan-India figures. However, I don't
want to make decisions just to please them
or anyone else. I want to make decisions that
are true to myself and my goals.
Do you discuss cinema with your friends
in the industry such as Allu Arjun and Ram
Charan, given that they have become pan-
India figures is there an added pressure to
match up?
As for my closest friends who happen to be
seniors in the industry, I don't feel like I'm
falling behind because I'm following in their
footsteps. I look up to them and am inspired
by the boundaries they're breaking. We do
hang out and talk about films, but when we're
together it's more about catching up on the
person behind the actor. Shooting a film can
consume you and there's more to life than just
my work.
You've also dabbled in producing with your production company,
Annapurna Studios. Does the process of filmmaking also appeal to
you?
As an actor, I have a lot of respect for my job and the field of
filmmaking. Whenever I get the time, I like to spend it with
technicians, directors, and other crewmembers to understand my
craft a little more. I feel that the more sense of cinema I have, the
better I am able to carry myself in my position. Recently, I had the
chance to visit a studio that had set up a virtual production for the
Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian. It was so fascinating to see
how much cinema has progressed and how many things we can do.
I would definitely be interested in learning more about the process of
filmmaking whenever I get the chance.

If there is one place I’ve seen you truly come alive, it’s
on the cricket field. Tell us more about your love for the
game…
I think whenever I get the chance; I jump on a horse, grab a
cricket bat, or hit the slopes. I am passionate about sports,
and I don't just play for fun, I play to win like a psycho be
it table tennis, video game, or any other sport. Sports are
therapeutic for me, and I've learned many life skills and
teamwork through them. Cricket, in particular, holds a
special place in my heart. Playing in the Celebrity Cricket
League has been amazing, as I get to play with my heroes
and give them my all without any compromises.
Are there any other films on the horizon that you're
considering?
So, I have two films in the pipeline. One is not confirmed
yet, but the other one is and I'll start shooting in June. I
want to challenge myself as an actor and push my limits.
I'm looking for quality over quantity and want every film to
be an experience. The upcoming film is poles apart from
my previous roles, and I'm excited to explore a new world.
I want the audience to know that a lot of effort went into
making this film.
Quick Intakes
Whom would you to go seek advice on
a. Career choices and movies: Ram Charan.
b. Women and Relationships: Brother Naga Chaitanya.
c. Career advice beyond movies: Father Nagarjuna.
d. For Partying: Ram Charan
e. Financial advice: My dad as he's not just known as
an actor, but also for his financial acumen, and I trust
his judgment in this area. He has a great track record
with managing accounts, running his own business,
and making some wise investments.
What is this one thing you’ve learned from the given set
of people-
a. Mother: I have to say that my mother has this
amazing quality of finding something positive in every
situation. No matter what happens in life, she always
manages to see the good in it. That's something that I
really admire about her. Even in the toughest of times,
she is always able to find a silver lining. It's a trait that I
would love to emulate and take with me throughout my
life.
b. Father: My dad has a cool and composed attitude
toward everything. He believes that if you approach a
situation with your head held high and have faith that
you can work your way out of it, then you will always
have a higher power to guide you. This mind-set has
helped him deal with challenges in life in a much better
way.
c. Brother: I admire my brother's straightforward
approach to life. He doesn't complicate things and is
always sure of what he wants and who he is.
d. Granddad: As for my granddad, I truly admire him.
I miss him the most now. I regret not asking him the
right questions and not fully engaging with him while
he was still alive. He was like an encyclopaedia of films
and had achieved so much in his life. Today, I would
have enjoyed having more meaningful conversations
with him, both as a kid and an adult.
If you were to remake a movie from either your father's
or grandfather's films, which movie would you choose?
I believe that classic movies should be left alone, but to
answer the question, I would say Hello Brother, which
is my father's film.
Choices-Nagarjuna in Shiva or Nagarjuna in Hello
Brother?
Personally, even though I see myself as a baby during
those times, I believe that for my dad, it would be
Shiva. As an actor, you get very few films that become
a defining moments in your career, and for him, it was
before Shiva and after Shiva.
A recent movie that you saw and thought you could
have been a part of…
I really liked KGF, it was one of those films that I wish
I could have been a part of. It brought a new take on
commercial cinema and Prashanth Neel, the director,
did a great job. I know him well and I keep telling
him that this film had a shock value that was really
impressive. I'm a big fan of big commercial heroism
and KGF had it all.
Your favourite actor?
Yash, who is actually my senior and my closest friend
in the industry.

Manish Reddy, a graduate of IIT Kharagpur in 2013,
experienced the challenges of finding suitable living
spaces in densely populated cities like Bombay and
Bangalore, where real estate costs were rising. To
address this issue, he and his team sought to create a
better option for young urban professionals in their 20s
to 30s who were not yet ready to settle down and start a
family. They proposed to landlords the idea of designing
high-quality, communal living spaces that foster a sense
of community and prioritize good design, furnishings,
and social connectivity. The result was the creation of
Thrive Living, which provides a welcoming and social
living experience that offers residents both privacy and
comfort.
Abhishek Tropi, who is four years junior to Manish,
worked with him on this concept after Manish
approached him with a freelance project. Together,
they envisioned a living space that caters to young
professionals seeking a residence that aligns with their
lifestyle. He recognized that existing housing options,
such as apartments and gated communities, did not
meet the needs of this demographic, who often work
long hours, are single, and desire social connections.
The Thrive Living initiative was founded to address this
gap in the market.
EVOLUTION OF THRIVE LIVING
Thrive Living:

Manish and Abhishek's experience of feeling isolated when
they moved to a new city as IITians gave rise to Thrive Living.
They understood the challenges of starting fresh in a new place
and offer more than just a home. They become your friend and
support system, sharing stories and guiding you toward your
dreams. With a vibrant community of like-minded individuals,
you can connect right away and enjoy the company. Thrive Living
carefully designs and curates living spaces to make you feel at
home. Whether you need a roommate or a listening ear, they are
always there for you, every step of the way. Don't let moving to
a new city be scary; choose Thrive Living and be yourself, make
memories, and thrive!
The duo has introduced a new concept to aid you in your
journey with four distinct spaces: Thrive One and Thrive DLF in
Gachibowli, Thrive Hidden House, and Thrive Zero in Kondapur.
Surabhi Goel speaks with Manish Reddy and Abhishek Tropi,
who are the driving force behind the shared living trend in
Hyderabad.

Manish sets it apart from other shared living spaces by
providing a good space for bachelor and young working
professionals at a reasonable price. Thrive Living
creates common spaces for residents to chill out and
showcase their talents, such as artists and musicians,
who are looking to grow professionally from their hobby
space but are still not fully confident. These common
spaces also provide a captive audience for the artists to
build a fan base and gain validation.
Abhishek believes that one of Thrive Living's distinctive
features that differentiates it from other shared living
spaces is its robust feedback system. They continuously
gather feedback from their residents to ensure a top-
notch living experience. As founders, Abhishek and
Manish lived in the same building for two years and still
maintain relationships with 50-60% of the residents,
which allows them to receive genuine and constructive
feedback to make improvements. Additionally, their
design education as architects and designers enables
them to effectively receive and implement feedback.
They have four different concepts of shared living
- Thrive Zero, Thrive DLF, Thrive Hidden House, and
Thrive One. Thrive Zero is a ground or development
that is designed and executed on-site, with a focus on
community spaces and personal space. Thrive DLF,
on the other hand, is more focused on one-bedroom
apartments and individual living spaces. Thrive One was
the first building the company constructed, designed
as a living experiment to collect feedback for future
designs. Finally, Thrive Hidden House is an old building
that has been refurbished with a mix of feedback from
their previous concepts. With each new concept, Thrive
Living aims to improve upon the last and create an
optimal shared living experience for its residents.

AND SERVICES
THE FOUR DIFFERENT CONCEPTS OF THRIVE LIVING
I N D I A
INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE
15 May 2023
Thrive Living initially operated as a real estate
architecture business that constructed buildings
for individuals, but during the COVID-19 pandemic,
they recognized the significance of community and
belonging when several people, including foreigners
and those from various regions of India, were stranded
in one of their buildings. They drew inspiration from IIT
Kharagpur's strong community and began organizing
events such as music gigs to promote organic
community development, keeping rules flexible for their
building residents.
In February 2020, just before the lockdown, they started
their first property, where Manish and Abhishek, along
with office staff, had to stay in the building and manage
everything from cleaning to cooking. This challenging
time helped them realize the demand for single-room
living spaces and the importance of catering to work-
from-home needs. They now focus on solving the
problem of providing excellent living spaces by exploring
properties in densely populated areas and encouraging
entrepreneurs to start their own food joints to meet the
community's food needs.
Thrive Living's founders faced a significant challenge
in convincing landlords to invest in their community-
based living concept. Unlike many hostel operators who
maximize revenue by squeezing multiple occupants
into one room, Thrive Living offers a higher-quality living
experience by providing single-room accommodations
and promoting community. Finding landlords who
shared their vision and understood the long-term
benefits of investing more upfront was challenging. The
founders had to act as a bridge between the consumer's
expectations and the landlord's investment mindset to
show the value of their approach.
Thrive Living has set its sights on expanding to new
cities and developing its own properties to ensure
high-quality living standards for its customers. While
they used to lease older buildings and convert them
into their spaces, they are now seeking to partner with
landlords and developers who believe in the future of the
city and are willing to invest in building quality assets.
Thrive Living will design the whole space for them, and
the landlord will have an operating contract, assuring
them of a steady income. This expansion will create
more supply in the city and benefit the end customer.
Additionally, Thrive Living plans to engage with more
empathetic people like artists to build their community
further.
1. What's your favourite vacation spot?
Manish- I am an introvert who enjoys the
peacefulness of the mountains, particularly the
captivating beauty of the Himalayas. He prefers
traveling to secluded destinations in Himachal and
Kashmir and has a preference for rugged places
over touristy ones.
Abhishek- I enjoy going on weekend escapes
to Hampi, which is located close to Hyderabad.
He also frequents visits to Rishikesh, which he
considers his second home.
2. What's your favourite way to relax?
Manish- I like to relax by sitting in my car, playing
music, and enjoying my own company.
Abhishek- My favourite way of relaxing is to do
nothing, sit and stare at a wall for hours.
3. How do you like to stay active and maintain a
healthy lifestyle?
Manish- I wish to work more on it. Although it is
not my strong area, I want to prioritize controlling
my diet. It is crucial to have a disciplined diet to
achieve the goal of staying active and healthy.
Abhishek- I am still figuring out the ways to stay
active. In two years I will turn 30, and I will start
thinking about these aspects and would answer
these questions. (laughs)
4. How do you like to try new things and step out
of your comfort zone?
Manish- I have a strong aversion to feelings
of restlessness and stagnation, which can be
a source of discomfort. By taking a thoughtful
and intentional approach to my diet and other
aspects of life, I create a sense of structure and
predictability that helps me feel more grounded
and centred.
Abhishek- My business keeps me out of my
comfort zone all the time.

The Changing Meaning of Family:
It’s Time to Legalize Adoption for
Same-Sex Couples
Mehak Walia in conversation with Shreya Kaul, a counselling psychologist and Narrative Therapy
Practitioner, Ankit Vashisht, a lawyer practising in the Supreme Court, and various members of
the LGBTQIA+ community.
May brings in the auspicious day
when we get together and celebrate
the people who make our lives whole,
our family, but for many same-sex
couples in India, the meaning of
family has long been a contentious
issue. Despite the strides made
towards equality, the adoption
process remains out of reach for
them, leaving them without the legal
protections and rights that come
with parenthood. For these couples,
the simple act of starting a family is
fraught with hurdles and roadblocks.
They are forced to navigate a system
that often views their love as less
valid, and their families as less
worthy.
While we embark on this journey, to
fight the necessary war, it is essential
to have some legal knowledge in
our arsenal. In conversation with a
lawyer from the Supreme Court of
India about adoption rights in India
and around the globe.
Ankit Vashisht, a lawyer who is
currently practicing in the Supreme
Court of India, specializing in matters
of the constitution, arbitration, and
criminal law explained, “The process
of adoption in India is not easy, and it
is regulated by the Central Adoption
Resource Authority (CARA). CARA
is a statutory body of the Ministry
of Women and Child Development.
The organization's primary function
is to ensure that the best interests
of the child are protected throughout
the adoption process. The eligibility
of prospective adoptive parents (or
PAPs) is covered under Section 57
of the Juvenile Justice Act. One of
the rules states that no child shall be
placed in adoption to a couple unless
they have had at least two years
of the solid marital relationship.
Same-sex couples are unable to
create a two-year stable marital bond
since same-sex weddings are not
recognized in India, making them
unfit to be PAPs.”
Ankit Vashisht, lawyer

But this isn’t just limited to India,
it is a global issue and many other
countries have dealt with the same
requirements in their own unique and
impressive ways. While explaining
the same, Ankit added, “The right
to be protected from discrimination
based on sexual orientation inside
the European Union and the right
to respect for family and life are
both crucially protected by the
European Court of Human Rights.
The European Convention on Human
Rights forbids Member States
from discriminating in adoption
procedures based on sexual
orientation. Similarly, the value of
individual liberty as enshrined in the
Constitution has long been upheld
in the United States of America.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in
the well-known case of Obergefel v.
Hodges (2015) that discriminating
against gays is against the spirit
of the Constitution and that the
value of individual liberty is equal
for every person in society. This
judgment has led to various judicial
pronouncements and legislation
legitimizing adoption for same-
sex couples. In fact, despite social
biases, South Africa is one of the few
common-law nations that recognize
same-sex couples' rights and the
best interests of the children are put
first.”
So, even though the whole adoption process can be hard, strenuous, and
challenging for parents, it is extremely worth it because they get to bring
home a kid to raise and love. This beautiful right should be available to the
LGBTQIA+ community too. The unavailability of the same has also ended
up affecting the community members’ mental health. We spoke to a mental

Shreya Kaul (She/her), a counselling psychologist
and Narrative Therapy Practitioner whose therapy is
based on a queer affirmative, inclusive, feminist, and
trauma-informed approach believes that “born into
a very heterosexual and patriarchal narrative, people
from the community are consistently stigmatized and
discriminated against and they haven’t even been given
access to basic rights. Now, not having this access can
be a stifling and psychologically detrimental experience.
Among such rights is the right to be able to adopt, and to
have a family. If this changes and queer individuals are
legally able to adopt, it’ll give the hope and dream that
they have towards an equal future that they previously
have not been able to envision. The concept of chosen
families within the LGBTQIA+ community is very
strong because there are individuals who have to face
abandonment as a part of their journey so, to have the
autonomy and choice to decide to start a family is huge
for them. It will be very psychologically beneficial for
them.”
She further added, “Furthermore, if queer people are given
the ability to adopt, it would also mean that many more
children will have the opportunity to find their forever
homes. Having this home, a place to belong, and people
to call your family is very powerful and important. It’s also
extremely psychologically beneficial for these children
because this is where we learn our fundamental ideas of
self. So, it will create an opportunity for both these lost
spaces to find each other and find family.”

Shreyas aka klaakaarjntu
Varsha Panikar (they/he), a trans-non-binary individual
who is the co-founder of Star Hopper, a trans-led film
production company from India, believes that “All children
deserve a home and love and care. Anyone who can
provide a child with a safe, secure, and loving home
should be able to adopt a child. Parents that do not
fit into patriarchal heteronormative family structures,
regardless of their gender identity, are going through the
legal hassle to adopt and raise children. Anyone who’s
willing to expend that much of their time, energy, and
financial resources, and is committed to giving a child
a good home, deserves to be a parent. They should be
allowed to become parents through adoption, or new
reproductive technologies, and be subject to the same
type of screening used with heterosexual couples and
individuals.”
They further explained, “Even denying legal parent status
through adoption to co-parents or second parents and
discrimination against these willing, capable parents will
deprive their children of benefits, rights, and privileges
enjoyed by children of heterosexual married couples.
Rights to property, healthcare, inheritance, custody, social
security, and much more. Having said this, the stigma
and discrimination around trans identities are drastically
higher and lawmakers need to ensure that the rights are
equally extended, to the trans community and the diverse
forms of kinship that are not traditionally recognized. It’s
time to legitimize non-traditional family structures which
we as trans and queer folks have come to foster, nurture,
and build into what some now call ‘home’.”
On a similar note, Bittu Karthik Kondaiah (they/he), a
trans individual who strongly believes that adoption rights
are necessary exclaimed, “All queer and trans persons
need to have the right to create safe and affirming
family spaces for themselves. But that’s not all, it’s also
extremely essential for the children. You must understand
that Intersex and gender non-conforming children are
also largely, being placed with cis-fender heterosexual
families who believe in corrective surgeries and therapies.
This is also harmful for these kids but if queer individuals
were allowed to adopt, they could have a haven to call
their family. It’s very essential.”
Whereas, Shreyas aka klaakaarjntu, a non-binary
pansexual multidisciplinary designer, passionate artist,
and art instructor believes that, “It is indeed a tragedy
to witness the slow decay of time as unqualified and
toxic government representatives deem themselves fit
to make decisions for the LGBTQIA+ community. The
laws preventing consenting individuals from adopting
a child, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender,
are outright outrageous. It is pitiful to see these
representatives and their ideological blocks ignoring
the emotions of the queer community. Having come
from a generation that experienced domestic violence
and unhealthy relationships, this discrimination must be
stopped. Children deserve supportive and affectionate
homes without the hindrance of outdated laws. Love
transcends boundaries regardless of orientation and
gender, and it is unacceptable to tolerate discrimination.
American shows have already made strides in promoting
inclusivity for queer parenting, and it's high time we
took notes. We must take a stand against these hateful
individuals and demand the necessary changes. ``

We also spoke to Jahnvi Kataria, a dancer, a proud
member of the LGBTQ+ community and, a business

booster. Talking about adoption rights, she said, “I just
cannot think of any reason anyone should be refused to
adopt. As long as the individuals have the financial and
mental bandwidth to take care of a child. I am a bi myself
working in the corporate sector and I've always wanted
to adopt, even before I came out. We all need people who
want to adopt, so why say no when there are children out
there who can get a better life?”
So, as we celebrate Family Day, let us remember
that families come in all shapes and sizes and that
every family is deserving of respect, dignity, and legal
recognition. Let us come together to demand change, to
fight for a world where every child has the chance to grow
up in a family that loves and supports them, regardless of
who that family is made up of. After all, we all deserve a

TIPS AND TRICKS
TO DECLUTTER AND ORGANIZE YOUR WARDROBE
Decluttering and organizing your wardrobe can be a daunting task, but it's an essential step towards a more organized
and stress-free lifestyle. It's easy to accumulate clothes, but with a little effort and a systematic approach, you can
transform your closet into a stylish space. Dhanush Kumar will guide you through the process of decluttering and
organizing your wardrobe, step by step.
Assess Your Wardrobe
The first step to decluttering your wardrobe is to take
a good look at what you have. This means taking
everything out of the closet, including clothes, shoes, and
accessories. Once you have everything in the open, start
sorting them into three piles: Keep, Donate, and Sell. Be
honest with yourself and ask yourself this question.
Donate or Sell Unwanted Items
Once you have sorted everything into piles. It is
time to get rid of unwanted items. You can either
donate them to charity or sell them online or at a
store. If you choose to donate, make sure you find a
reputable organization that will put your clothes to
good use.
Organize your keep pile
Now that you have narrowed down
your wardrobe to the items you want to
keep, it is time to start organizing. The
first thing you should do is group your
clothes by category like tops, dresses,
and pants. Within each category,
organize your clothes by colour, starting
with light colours and moving to darker
ones. This will make it easier to find
what you are looking for.

Can Lingerie Help People
Walk the Path Towards
Self-Love?
Love is an integral part of our lives and is very important for our mental and emotional
well-being but the most essential form of love in our lives is, of course, self-love. To put
simply, self-love is an appreciation for oneself and having a high regard for our well-being
and happiness. It means taking care of our needs and not sacrificing our well-being or
happiness to please others. Alas, in this fast-paced and cruel modern world where everyone
is competing for resources, ideal lives and even love, it's hard to not be critical of ourselves.
This makes maintaining and practising self-love all the more essential. It is necessary to be
able to appreciate ourselves every day. But what makes self-love the key to long, happy and
fulfilled lives? Mehak Walia in conversation with Ummang Sharma Bajpai (MWP, MBPsS),
an Integrative Psychologist and the Head of Psychological Services at the Institute for the
Advancement of Mental Health (IAMH), an online-first institute, established to improve access
to mental wellness and mental healthcare.
W
hile talking about the importance of self-love,
Ummang explained, “Self-love is extremely
important in a person's life because it lays the
foundation for a healthy and fulfilling life. Loving
oneself allows individuals to establish a positive relationship
with themselves - which in turn leads to feeling more
confident in their abilities and sense of self-worth. Having
self-love also helps a person to have better relationships
with others, as they are less likely to tolerate harmful or
abusive behaviour from others. Additionally, it fosters better
communication - of one’s needs and boundaries. There is
a growing body of research on the importance of self-love,
particularly in the fields of psychology and mental health.
Studies have shown that self-love is positively associated
with better mental health outcomes, such as lower levels of
anxiety and depression, and improved life satisfaction.”
He further added, “Additionally, self-love has been linked
to greater resilience and coping skills, allowing individuals
to better navigate stress and adversity - which happens
because a person who loves themselves is better able to
cope with stress and overcome challenges. Other studies
have found that self-love can also be associated with better
physical health outcomes, such as improved sleep, lower
levels of inflammation, and enhanced immune function.
Overall, the research suggests that self-love is a crucial
aspect of overall well-being and is essential for personal
growth and happiness. Self-love is a critical aspect of
personal growth and happiness and is necessary for a
fulfilling and balanced life.”
But, in the daily struggle towards self-love, a question that
puzzles us all now and then is how we should love our
bodies when they don't match the beauty standards. How
do we feel sexy in our different body types and shapes
with all their differences and flaws? Well, I might have the
answer. One of the most interesting and creative ways to fall
in love with yourself is via lingerie. The use of lingerie has
been around for centuries, and they have been used time
and again to accentuate certain body parts and our overall
appeal. However now, they have become more than just
tools to attract others. They have not turned into the boldest,
strongest and sexiest tools for a woman's sexual expression.

Don’t believe me? Well, look back to the first time you came
across a gorgeous piece of lingerie that made you pause.
Did you end up trying it? Did your reflection in that mirror
make you smile and feel special, even if was just for a split
second? That is the exact power of lingerie. They have
turned into symbols of accepting our sexuality in its truest
form. But how do they help?
Ummang believes that “wearing lingerie or fetish gear
that makes you feel confident and empowered can have
a positive impact on self-love. If wearing certain types of
clothing makes you feel good about yourself and boosts your
confidence, then it can certainly be seen as a form of self-
care and self-expression. I think it’s worth acknowledging
here the special relevance of self-love and the use of
lingerie or fetish gear for the LGBTQIA+ community. For
many individuals in the queer community, self-love can be a
particularly challenging aspect of personal growth, as they
may have faced ‘minority stress’ - which is discrimination,
stigma, and rejection based on their sexual orientation or
gender identity. The use of lingerie or fetish gear can be
a way for these individuals to express their sexuality and
gender identity in a safe and empowering way and can help
to build self-confidence and self-acceptance. “
It is also essential to note the fact that all of us have
unique body types and different preferences when
it comes to lingerie. They are more than just simple
undergarments; they are a tool through which we feel
sexy and appreciate our unique bodies in all their glory.
They have the power to shatter the boxes of toxic beauty
and body standards created by society as a whole. You
see, wearing a nice set of lingerie of our choice is literally,
one of the most empowering experiences out there. This
can positively affect our emotional state by showing
off our fierce and fabulous side with a layer of sexual
liberation and girl power. This can also boost our self-
esteem and confidence and on top of it all, it makes us
feel good about our bodies thereby improving our self-
image. This allows you to feel validation internally rather
than seeking it from others. This can be a brilliant path to
work on our self-esteem as a whole.

Ummang agreed and added with a smile, “Wearing
lingerie or fetish gear can help improve self-esteem
for some people. It can be a way to express one's
sexuality, feel confident, and embrace their body.
However, it is important to note that self-esteem is a
complex and multifaceted concept and is not solely
determined by what one wears. Wearing lingerie or
fetish gear can provide temporary confidence boosts,
but it needs to be part of a wider strategy to develop a
healthy relationship with self and a stable sense of self-
worth. While interrelated, self-worth, self-esteem, and
self-love are distinct concepts. Simply put, self-worth
is the underlying belief in one's inherent value, self-
esteem is an external evaluation of oneself, and self-
love is a positive and compassionate attitude towards
oneself. Unlike self-esteem, which can be influenced
by external factors and external validation, self-love is
a more stable, holistic, and internalized sense of self-
worth. Plus, we must also remember that everyone's
experiences and preferences are unique, and what
works for one person may not work for another. So, you
shouldn’t do something if you’re feeling threatened by it
in any way.”
But it’s also very essential to note and understand the
fact that the battle towards self-love cannot just be
won with lingerie. You do need other arsenals in your
corner. There are several ways you can support the use
of lingerie or fetish gear in the process of self-love and
personal growth.
While discussing these ways in detail, Ummang
explained, “First and foremost, be open-minded
and non-judgmental: Allow individuals to express
themselves and explore their sexuality in a way that
feels comfortable and empowering to them, without
imposing your own opinions or prejudices. We live in a
shame-based culture, so a lot of biases may covertly
exist in our thoughts - it’s important to call these out
and keep them in check. Next, it’s important to provide
a safe and supportive environment: Create a space
where individuals feel comfortable and accepted, free
from judgement or shame. This will aid the process
of self-discovery for them. We can also ensure that
we foster body positivity: Help folks embrace their
bodies, regardless of their shape or size, and focus
on what makes them unique and beautiful. This
enables everyone to emphasize self-love and serves
as a reminder that true confidence and empowerment
come from within. Importantly, providing a supportive
and empowering environment, and encouraging
individuals to focus on self-love and self-care is key
to promoting a positive body image and positive
personal growth.”
Another very essential fact that we must remember
is that it's important to remember that self-love is
not solely dependent on external factors. Ummang
expressed that, ‘True self-love comes from within.
It involves valuing and accepting oneself for who
they are, regardless of their appearance or external
circumstances. Ultimately, what is more, important is
to engage in activities that make you feel good about
yourself - that empower you to be your authentic
self. Whether that's wearing lingerie or fetish gear, or
engaging in other forms of self-expression, the key
is to focus on building a positive relationship with
yourself and nurturing your well-being.”
At the end of the day, whether it’s sexy lingerie,
gorgeous makeup, shiny new heels or just some
comfort food, it’s essential to care for and appreciate
yourself while learning how to fall in love with
yourself. This road might be long and hard but don’t
give up and hang in there, it’s all worth it!

DIVYA KUMAR IS A ONE-MAN
SHOW ON A HIGH!
The pandemic, though one of the worst
viral disasters to strike human life turned
out to be a time frame of opportunities for
some adventurous minds. Divya Kumar
was introduced to Kombucha drinks during
a trip to the USA. Her return coincided
with the lockdown and she was pleasantly
surprised to find one of her neighbours
revelling in Kombucha.
E
ver thought of fermented sweet tea with a culture of bacteria and yeast? That is what the Kombucha drink is all
about. It has stirred many a beverage lover to mull over its origins and numerous health benefits. As intriguing
as its name is, this drink has caught the fancy of many and has become a must-have beverage! Divya Kumar
explains the nuances of DIVS Kombucha to Canta Dadlaney and how she loves to be called, the one-woman Kombucha
entrepreneur in Chennai.
What’s behind the name ‘Kombucha’ and why
do people state that it’s akin to a beer when
actually it’s a nutritious type of tea?
Kombucha has its roots in ancient China and was
renowned as the Drink of Immortality with legend
stating that regular drinkers would live to enjoy a life
span of more than 100 years! DIVS Kombucha (DIVS is
the short form of Divya and the drink is named after me)
involves the traditional process which entails the science
of fermentation, perhaps, that is why many compare it
to a beer. To put it simply, Kombucha is to tea as wine
is to grape juice. You can call it a fermented tea with
a unique, natural effervescence because of its bright,
tangy and refreshing taste. Our DIVS Kombuchas bubble
with billions of friendly living microorganisms, these are
known as probiotics and aid in digestion, support gut
health, and boost immunity.

With no background or
knowledge about the drink,
how and when did you get into
this?
The pandemic had made me too
restless for words. From baking
banana bread to drinking dalgona
coffee, I ran out of things to do in
my mother's kitchen. One fine day,
my neighbour, well into Kombucha
brewing, lent me her SCOBY
(Symbiotic culture of bacteria and
yeast), a starter culture that kickstarts
fermentation. As per legend, a SCOBY
should always be gifted. This gift
was a turning point for me during the
lockdown!
How did you go about
researching the ingredients
and the process of making
them?
I am neither a microbiologist, botanist
nor chef, I have no formal training
in this field. I spent a lot of time,
researching and studying the subject
online, and poured over various
journals. I then connected with
experts in microbiology, to understand
the science of brewing. I burnt many
a midnight candle to understand the
minute details of the product; from
the ingredients to the brewing, the
target audiences, benefits and even
alternative uses.
What are the key ingredients?
Our Kombucha line-up typically
contains a blend of unorthodox black
 green teas with sulphur-free cane
sugar for fermentation. We have
developed over 35 recipes, that involve
all-natural herbs, spices, botanicals,
fruits and florals, and ideally work
with whatever is available as per the
season. We worked with a US-based
lab and discovered over six strains
of probiotics in our beverages, which
speaks highly of our nutritional profile.
What are the nutritional
benefits?
Probiotics help repopulate beneficial
gut flora with diverse bacteria,
producing neurochemicals that
improve your mood and energy
levels. A healthy gut strengthens the
connection between your brain and
your gut to better regulate mental
well-being. The active enzymes in our
Kombucha help to break down foods
and increase nutrient absorption,
aid effective digestion and boost
metabolism. Our Kombucha drinks
are also rich in Vitamin B2, and C,
polyphenols, lactic acid, glucuronic
acid and acetic acids. Parents have
reverted to telling us about how
this drink has helped wean their
children from serious Cola and Pepsi
addiction. Also, Kombucha includes
only 6 gm of sugar compared to 30-40
gm in your regular soft drinks and is
free of all artificial colouring.
How many flavours of
Kombucha are there?
For a drink that takes 25-30 days to
craft, you can find DIVS Kombucha
even in a place like Himachal Pradesh
and enjoy at least 9-12 flavours during
a peak season. Between the months
of March to August, you can enjoy
Nannari cola, Firecracker, Goldrush
and Banganapalli bomb and between
September and February, Hibiscus,
Apple pie and orange peppermint.
You will always find a bottle of
Kombucha in this passionate brewer’s
home who has witnessed some of
her own customers brew this drink
and start their own ventures. For
her, competition is a matter of ‘the
more, the merrier’. With no concrete
expansion plans for the moment,
Divya considers her compact brewery
premises that craft thousands of litres
of Kombucha, the ultimate haven.

Beat The Heat With These Traditional

Beat The Heat With These Traditional
Summer in India can be a scorching affair, with the sun

How
is taking over the
tech world
ChatGPT has become a hot topic of discussion for the past few months,
with over 100 million users within two months of its launch. It became the
fastest-growing app in the world. The AI-based chatbot was developed by
a company named OpenAI which is backed by Elon Musk, and has abilities
like writing long codes, and text content like essays, emails etc., within
a couple of seconds. Recently, OpenAI introduced an updated version of
ChatGPT which is the GPT-4 and it brought about further improvements
compared to the previous version. Now that the use of AI has increased
rapidly, the threat of AI-based software and robots replacing humans
from their jobs has also started becoming a concern. Aniket Pande
from BlazeTechnica gives a brief about all the advancements going on
in ChatGPT and how the future of the tech industry would be along with
these AI-based chatbots.
with over 100 million users within two months of its launch. It became the
ChatGPT
What is GPT-4 and how can it
benefit our lives?
GPT-4 is the latest version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT
and it has a lot of improvements like a better-
responding interface, image input along with
text just like Google lens and a more human-
like natural conversational style. GPT-4 is also
capable of handling and processing over 25,000
words of text which allows a lot more use
cases like long-form content creation, extended
conversations, document search and analysis
and more. These are the kind of features which
are very beneficial from an end-user perspective
as they add a lot more convenience to our lives.
From a business use case side, ChatGPT can benefit in even more areas like Customer Support where AI-based chatbots
can provide 24/7 support to customers by answering to their queries, Healthcare services where the chatbots can provide
personalised medical advice to patients based on their past treatment records, Sales and Marketing where chatbots
can help in generating leads and also run online marketing campaigns, targeting ads to people falling under a common
interest group. Even in the IT sector, ChatGPT can help in automating the recruitment process. Integrating ChatGPT in
CRM (Customer Relationship Management System) can help get real-time insights into customer behaviour and market
trends. However, the use cases are endless and we are surely going to see Artificial Intelligence playing a huge role in
revolutionising the tech industry in next couple of years.
Is ChatGPT going to steal our jobs?
With the rapid growth of ChatGPT technology, there
are a lot of rising concerns about AI-based chatbots
replacing human employees from their jobs. Well
to an extent, AI will surely take up a few job roles
in which tasks are repetitive and businesses will
adapt to AI-based chatbots for cost-effectiveness,
but eventually, it will also result in a lot more new
job opportunities which will be related to data and
artificial intelligence. The world will change but it will
be all about upskilling ourselves with time. ChatGPT
is indeed a very powerful tool which can help in
automating conversations and getting a few things
done quickly through its algorithm but still, it cannot
replace the creative and out-of-the-box thinking of a
human mind.

Morangam Khaling (Mo Naga or Mo), a member of the UIPO Naga tribe from Manipur and a fashion apparel
graduate from NIFT stumbled upon tattooing during college and was intrigued. After researching its
significance, he began studying and travelling to remote villages in North East in 2012 to learn more, eventually
dedicating himself to preserving the art form. In conversation with Surabhi Goel, he shares his journey of
reviving Naga tattooing.
M
o explains that while there is now ample
information available online about Naga
tattooing, he began researching the art
form in 2007 when information was scarce.
He espouses the notion that traditions are serving
as vital identity markers, abound across India, and
tattoos are not an exception. They serve as powerful
expressions of one's status and culture and convey
narratives about their persona.
In the present era, grasping the significance of tattoos,
and how they contribute to the formation of our
cultural expression and identity, is crucial. Previously,
tattoos had been relegated to insignificance. However,
Mo Naga is determined to create awareness and
promote the recognition of their importance. The fruits
of his labour are becoming evident, with scholars and
students increasingly studying this art form, bringing
it to the forefront as an indispensable component of
India's cultural heritage.

Mo Naga's approach to incorporating traditional tattoos
into his designs involves a deep understanding and
appreciation of the art form's significance in the identity,
culture, and expressions of the people. He endeavours
to disseminate awareness among those who have
discontinued tattooing due to societal influence, which
has deemed tattoos to be insignificant in the context of
modern-day living. He is meticulous in his approach to
avoid appropriating or weakening the integrity of the art,
instead inspiring individuals to delve into their ancestral
heritage. To achieve this goal, he engages in extensive
research, travel, and communication to grasp and manifest
a creation that respects the people's sentiments. One can
find him on Instagram as Headhuntersink.
The artist clients are a selective group of people who
are culturally aware and seek to express themselves in a
meaningful way. His tattoos are inspired by the wisdom,
knowledge, and lessons passed down by ancestors over
hundreds and thousands of years. Despite our modern
advancements, Mo Naga believes that we still crave
connection and community. His clients come from various
parts of the world and relate to his work. The tattoos that
he creates convey a way of life and philosophy, and the
aesthetics of it reflect the majesty of nature.
Although Mo Naga was once known for his realistic
tattoo styles, he has shifted his focus towards promoting
traditional art and its importance. Over the past 8-9 years,
he has been spreading awareness about traditional art and
tribal tattoos, which he specializes in. However, he is still
happy to take on special requests from clients who have
exciting ideas or want to express themselves through a
tattoo that may not be traditional. Despite his main focus
being on traditional tribal tattoos, Mo Naga is always happy
to take on projects that allow him to express his artistry
and create something meaningful and personal to his
clients.
Mo Naga is creating the Tattoo Village, a space for
traditional tattooing using thorns and natural pigments
in a village setting, where people can learn and share. He
recognizes the lack of such a space in contemporary society
and hopes to preserve and promote the art of traditional
tattooing. The Village will also have a Tattoo Garden and
serve as a platform for people interested in traditional
tattoos. Mo Naga's ancestral village is the chosen location,
and he has been appointed by the Ministry of Textiles
Handloom of Manipur to support and promote handloom.
Mo Naga plans to work with other cultural expressions of
the people in the future, but for now, his focus and priority
lie on the Tattoo Village. The Tattoo Village is his priority for
now and aims to be fully operational next year.

For tattoo artists interested in incorporating
traditional art into their work, Mo Naga emphasizes
the significance of investing time and effort into
learning and researching traditional art before
incorporating it into their designs. He cautions against
rushing the process, warning that a lack of research
and understanding can result in confusion or even
distortion of traditional art.
Quick Intakes
1. Who is your favourite tattoo artist?
My favourite artist is a traditional artist who had
a significant impact on me, the artist, who was 86
years old, did a tattoo on me in 2016 and sadly
passed away soon after. I look up to her and the
traditional art and culture that she embodied.
2. Besides tattooing, what other forms of art do
you enjoy, and how do they influence your work?
I am very much interested in making furniture,
particularly chairs, but due to my current
commitments to travel and generate funds for
building the tattoo village, I do not have time to
pursue this interest at the moment. Other art
forms that I love to work on are making music
with my friends and working with women's
organizations to protect handloom.
3. When you're not working, how do you like
to spend your free time, and do you have any
hobbies or interests outside of tattooing?
I enjoy making music and designing, including
creating furniture. However, I don’t have much
time for these activities because I am focused
on studying, promoting, and talking about Naga
tattooing, as well as travelling to generate funds
for the tattoo village. When I am in the forest,
I am busy building the village, which involves
cutting trees, building houses, and working on the
ground. When not in the forest, I travel to different
places.
4. What is your first love- Creating Music or
Designing?
I enjoy music, but the design is an inherent part
of my being. Despite not having had much time
to pursue it lately, I view my work on the tattoo
project as a duty rather than a passion or love.

HOW SMART
IS YOUR PUP
HOW SMART
Every dog has a different IQ, just like people. Varied dog breeds have
different IQs, yet within a given breed, each dog has a unique IQ. Although
there isn't a formal IQ test for dogs, one can determine the dog's
intelligence through signs and simple activities. Rashmi Bhumi Reddy lists
some wonderful, entertaining activities and tell-tale signs that can help
you discover your dog's IQ.
Without practice, your dog can
quickly recall your orders.
Every puppy obediently follows
instructions, but the intelligent ones will
retain their instructions for a long time
even if they are unfamiliar with them.
Take the case of teaching a dog to
walk backwards on command and not
practising it with them for a year. If your
dog is intelligent, they will still be able to
perform the task when asked.

Sadness is one emotion that can be read

Your dog will attempt to make you feel

They employs safety measures
Dogs must be trained to manoeuvre
through obstacles like crosswalks. A
smart dog will constantly take the initiative
and search independently for potential
safety hazards. For instance, a clever dog
can respond appropriately by cautioning
you as a speeding car approaches the
crossing (barking or dragging you back by
pulling the leash etc.).
They are aware that you're going.
Another characteristic or trait of smart
pups is their keen observational skills.
Does your dog recognise your suitcase,
for instance, when you pull it out? It's an
indication that something big is about

  • 3. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 3 May 2023 From the E DITOR T his may seem like a simple question but it’s highly underrated. It’s time we explore the importance of checking in with ourselves and ask the simple yet crucial question, ’How am I feeling?’ We often get so caught up in our daily routines and the demands of our work that we forget to take a moment to reflect on our emotional and mental wellbeing. So much so, that most seem to be loosing their mental orientation in the process. In this fast paced life, it's easy to lose sight of what really matters. We get caught up in the endless cycle of work and social media, always chasing after the next big thing, comparing ourselves to others, and constantly feeling the pressure to achieve more. But in the end, what does it all really mean? Who cares what others are doing or saying? We have one life to live, and it's up to us to make the most of it on our own terms. It's time to rediscover the simple pleasures in life, to slow down and enjoy the little things. Whether it's reading a book on a lazy summer afternoon or taking a long train ride to an unknown destination, let's savor these moments and cherish them. It's important to break free from the constant comparisons and unnecessary goals and instead focus on what truly makes us happy. At the end of the day, it's not about what we accomplish or how much money we make. It's about the relationships we build, the memories we create, and the impact we have on the world around us. As part of this reflection, we delve into the topic of legalizing adoption in same-sex marriages. We explore whether India is ready for this important step and what it means for all individuals seeking to start a family. It's an essential conversation, and we are proud to facilitate it in our magazine. In addition to this, we also bring you the latest travel and food recommendations to help you plan your next adventure and satisfy your cravings. From local cuisine to exotic destinations, we have it all covered. Finally, we have an exclusive interview with our cover model and actor Akhil Akkineni, who shares his thoughts on dealing with the expectations and comparisons that come with his family's long-standing legacy in the film industry. Akhil's insights remind us that we should follow our hearts and break free from the pressures and expectations that others may have for us. We hope you enjoy this issue and take a moment to reflect on your emotional and mental wellbeing. As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions. Happy Reading How are you feeling? • 8. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 8 May 2023 TRENDING NOW How does it feel for you to make a comeback on screen after a hiatus with Agent? Well, it's been quite a journey to get to this point, coming back to the screen after one and a half years with a film like 'Agent' compared to my previous work. As we approach the release, the initial excitement has faded away and nerves have started to kick in. I've had a really intense promotion schedule, but I'm still enthusiastic and grateful for this opportunity. It's been a few sleepless nights, and I'm feeling like a zombie, but a very excited zombie at that. It's keeping my nerves down, and I'm just happy to be tired. Could you share your preparation process for your role as Agent? I've heard that you gained 16 kgs for the role and also sustained multiple injuries. Can you tell us more about that? I have to admit, the transformation for Agent was a grueling experience for me. I had initially thought it would take 3-4 months to gain the necessary weight for the role, but it ended up taking almost a year of pushing myself to the limit in the gym. But the discipline and focus required for the transformation really helped me grow as a person, beyond just the physical changes. The movie itself was also a challenge to make, I've had a really intense promotion schedule, but I'm still enthusiastic and grateful for this opportunity. '' '' with high-octane action scenes shot all over India and abroad, spanning over 100 days of shooting. But the whole team was dedicated to bringing a thrilling and wild experience to the big screen, and if we can even capture 50-60% of what we envisioned, it will be a real winner.
  • 9. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 9 May 2023 TRENDING NOW How do you cope with the added pressure of being from a family with such a long-standing legacy in the film industry? Despite your past cinema, do you still feel the need to prove yourself? I don’t let my family name weigh on my decisions or aspirations. Of course, there’s added pressure that comes with it, but I try not to overthink it. There are days when I wonder if I’m carrying the legacy forward correctly or not, but at the end of the day, I’m just trying to follow my heart and do what I believe in. I don’t think my grandfather or father would have wanted me to feel like I need to carry the family legacy in a certain way. They became who they are today by daring to do something different and following their own paths. For me, it’s important to break free and prove myself in my own right. That’s what I’m focused on doing right now. I don’t let my family name weigh on my decisions or aspirations. Of course, there’s added pressure that comes with it, but I try not to overthink it. '' '' What are your thoughts on whether Agent aligns with your earlier desire for serious and meaningful cinema, despite your family's expectations for a big mass launch? That was a decade ago during the shooting of Manam. However, over time, I realized that my comfort lies in the action and commercial genres. For me, Agent has been that film. While I do want to find space for progressive cinema within the commercial barriers, I don't want to regress and make the same old films that were made ten years ago. I need to make an effort and bring something new to the table. Agent is one step towards that.
  • 10. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 10 May 2023 TRENDING NOW You come from a family of acting veterans. How involved is your family? Do you go to them for advice on scripts or your choices? I prefer to keep my major decisions in life to myself, even though I do take advice from my parents as any son would. It's a conscious decision to stay away from my family making my decisions for me. I want to be responsible for my own failures or success. Growing up from a guy to a man, I believe taking responsibility for my life is an important part of that process. Of course, there are times when I feel the pressure to please my extended family and friends who have become pan-India figures. However, I don't want to make decisions just to please them or anyone else. I want to make decisions that are true to myself and my goals. Do you discuss cinema with your friends in the industry such as Allu Arjun and Ram Charan, given that they have become pan- India figures is there an added pressure to match up? As for my closest friends who happen to be seniors in the industry, I don't feel like I'm falling behind because I'm following in their footsteps. I look up to them and am inspired by the boundaries they're breaking. We do hang out and talk about films, but when we're together it's more about catching up on the person behind the actor. Shooting a film can consume you and there's more to life than just my work. You've also dabbled in producing with your production company, Annapurna Studios. Does the process of filmmaking also appeal to you? As an actor, I have a lot of respect for my job and the field of filmmaking. Whenever I get the time, I like to spend it with technicians, directors, and other crewmembers to understand my craft a little more. I feel that the more sense of cinema I have, the better I am able to carry myself in my position. Recently, I had the chance to visit a studio that had set up a virtual production for the Star Wars TV show, The Mandalorian. It was so fascinating to see how much cinema has progressed and how many things we can do. I would definitely be interested in learning more about the process of filmmaking whenever I get the chance.
  • 11. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 11 May 2023 If there is one place I’ve seen you truly come alive, it’s on the cricket field. Tell us more about your love for the game… I think whenever I get the chance; I jump on a horse, grab a cricket bat, or hit the slopes. I am passionate about sports, and I don't just play for fun, I play to win like a psycho be it table tennis, video game, or any other sport. Sports are therapeutic for me, and I've learned many life skills and teamwork through them. Cricket, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. Playing in the Celebrity Cricket League has been amazing, as I get to play with my heroes and give them my all without any compromises. Are there any other films on the horizon that you're considering? So, I have two films in the pipeline. One is not confirmed yet, but the other one is and I'll start shooting in June. I want to challenge myself as an actor and push my limits. I'm looking for quality over quantity and want every film to be an experience. The upcoming film is poles apart from my previous roles, and I'm excited to explore a new world. I want the audience to know that a lot of effort went into making this film. Quick Intakes Whom would you to go seek advice on a. Career choices and movies: Ram Charan. b. Women and Relationships: Brother Naga Chaitanya. c. Career advice beyond movies: Father Nagarjuna. d. For Partying: Ram Charan e. Financial advice: My dad as he's not just known as an actor, but also for his financial acumen, and I trust his judgment in this area. He has a great track record with managing accounts, running his own business, and making some wise investments. What is this one thing you’ve learned from the given set of people- a. Mother: I have to say that my mother has this amazing quality of finding something positive in every situation. No matter what happens in life, she always manages to see the good in it. That's something that I really admire about her. Even in the toughest of times, she is always able to find a silver lining. It's a trait that I would love to emulate and take with me throughout my life. b. Father: My dad has a cool and composed attitude toward everything. He believes that if you approach a situation with your head held high and have faith that you can work your way out of it, then you will always have a higher power to guide you. This mind-set has helped him deal with challenges in life in a much better way. c. Brother: I admire my brother's straightforward approach to life. He doesn't complicate things and is always sure of what he wants and who he is. d. Granddad: As for my granddad, I truly admire him. I miss him the most now. I regret not asking him the right questions and not fully engaging with him while he was still alive. He was like an encyclopaedia of films and had achieved so much in his life. Today, I would have enjoyed having more meaningful conversations with him, both as a kid and an adult. If you were to remake a movie from either your father's or grandfather's films, which movie would you choose? I believe that classic movies should be left alone, but to answer the question, I would say Hello Brother, which is my father's film. Choices-Nagarjuna in Shiva or Nagarjuna in Hello Brother? Personally, even though I see myself as a baby during those times, I believe that for my dad, it would be Shiva. As an actor, you get very few films that become a defining moments in your career, and for him, it was before Shiva and after Shiva. A recent movie that you saw and thought you could have been a part of… I really liked KGF, it was one of those films that I wish I could have been a part of. It brought a new take on commercial cinema and Prashanth Neel, the director, did a great job. I know him well and I keep telling him that this film had a shock value that was really impressive. I'm a big fan of big commercial heroism and KGF had it all. Your favourite actor? Yash, who is actually my senior and my closest friend in the industry.

  • 13. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 13 May 2023 Manish Reddy, a graduate of IIT Kharagpur in 2013, experienced the challenges of finding suitable living spaces in densely populated cities like Bombay and Bangalore, where real estate costs were rising. To address this issue, he and his team sought to create a better option for young urban professionals in their 20s to 30s who were not yet ready to settle down and start a family. They proposed to landlords the idea of designing high-quality, communal living spaces that foster a sense of community and prioritize good design, furnishings, and social connectivity. The result was the creation of Thrive Living, which provides a welcoming and social living experience that offers residents both privacy and comfort. Abhishek Tropi, who is four years junior to Manish, worked with him on this concept after Manish approached him with a freelance project. Together, they envisioned a living space that caters to young professionals seeking a residence that aligns with their lifestyle. He recognized that existing housing options, such as apartments and gated communities, did not meet the needs of this demographic, who often work long hours, are single, and desire social connections. The Thrive Living initiative was founded to address this gap in the market. EVOLUTION OF THRIVE LIVING Thrive Living: Manish and Abhishek's experience of feeling isolated when they moved to a new city as IITians gave rise to Thrive Living. They understood the challenges of starting fresh in a new place and offer more than just a home. They become your friend and support system, sharing stories and guiding you toward your dreams. With a vibrant community of like-minded individuals, you can connect right away and enjoy the company. Thrive Living carefully designs and curates living spaces to make you feel at home. Whether you need a roommate or a listening ear, they are always there for you, every step of the way. Don't let moving to a new city be scary; choose Thrive Living and be yourself, make memories, and thrive! The duo has introduced a new concept to aid you in your journey with four distinct spaces: Thrive One and Thrive DLF in Gachibowli, Thrive Hidden House, and Thrive Zero in Kondapur. Surabhi Goel speaks with Manish Reddy and Abhishek Tropi, who are the driving force behind the shared living trend in Hyderabad. • 14. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 14 May 2023 Manish sets it apart from other shared living spaces by providing a good space for bachelor and young working professionals at a reasonable price. Thrive Living creates common spaces for residents to chill out and showcase their talents, such as artists and musicians, who are looking to grow professionally from their hobby space but are still not fully confident. These common spaces also provide a captive audience for the artists to build a fan base and gain validation. Abhishek believes that one of Thrive Living's distinctive features that differentiates it from other shared living spaces is its robust feedback system. They continuously gather feedback from their residents to ensure a top- notch living experience. As founders, Abhishek and Manish lived in the same building for two years and still maintain relationships with 50-60% of the residents, which allows them to receive genuine and constructive feedback to make improvements. Additionally, their design education as architects and designers enables them to effectively receive and implement feedback. They have four different concepts of shared living - Thrive Zero, Thrive DLF, Thrive Hidden House, and Thrive One. Thrive Zero is a ground or development that is designed and executed on-site, with a focus on community spaces and personal space. Thrive DLF, on the other hand, is more focused on one-bedroom apartments and individual living spaces. Thrive One was the first building the company constructed, designed as a living experiment to collect feedback for future designs. Finally, Thrive Hidden House is an old building that has been refurbished with a mix of feedback from their previous concepts. With each new concept, Thrive Living aims to improve upon the last and create an optimal shared living experience for its residents. • 15. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 15 May 2023 Thrive Living initially operated as a real estate architecture business that constructed buildings for individuals, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, they recognized the significance of community and belonging when several people, including foreigners and those from various regions of India, were stranded in one of their buildings. They drew inspiration from IIT Kharagpur's strong community and began organizing events such as music gigs to promote organic community development, keeping rules flexible for their building residents. In February 2020, just before the lockdown, they started their first property, where Manish and Abhishek, along with office staff, had to stay in the building and manage everything from cleaning to cooking. This challenging time helped them realize the demand for single-room living spaces and the importance of catering to work- from-home needs. They now focus on solving the problem of providing excellent living spaces by exploring properties in densely populated areas and encouraging entrepreneurs to start their own food joints to meet the community's food needs. Thrive Living's founders faced a significant challenge in convincing landlords to invest in their community- based living concept. Unlike many hostel operators who maximize revenue by squeezing multiple occupants into one room, Thrive Living offers a higher-quality living experience by providing single-room accommodations and promoting community. Finding landlords who shared their vision and understood the long-term benefits of investing more upfront was challenging. The founders had to act as a bridge between the consumer's expectations and the landlord's investment mindset to show the value of their approach. Thrive Living has set its sights on expanding to new cities and developing its own properties to ensure high-quality living standards for its customers. While they used to lease older buildings and convert them into their spaces, they are now seeking to partner with landlords and developers who believe in the future of the city and are willing to invest in building quality assets. Thrive Living will design the whole space for them, and the landlord will have an operating contract, assuring them of a steady income. This expansion will create more supply in the city and benefit the end customer. Additionally, Thrive Living plans to engage with more empathetic people like artists to build their community further. 1. What's your favourite vacation spot? Manish- I am an introvert who enjoys the peacefulness of the mountains, particularly the captivating beauty of the Himalayas. He prefers traveling to secluded destinations in Himachal and Kashmir and has a preference for rugged places over touristy ones. Abhishek- I enjoy going on weekend escapes to Hampi, which is located close to Hyderabad. He also frequents visits to Rishikesh, which he considers his second home. 2. What's your favourite way to relax? Manish- I like to relax by sitting in my car, playing music, and enjoying my own company. Abhishek- My favourite way of relaxing is to do nothing, sit and stare at a wall for hours. 3. How do you like to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle? Manish- I wish to work more on it. Although it is not my strong area, I want to prioritize controlling my diet. It is crucial to have a disciplined diet to achieve the goal of staying active and healthy. Abhishek- I am still figuring out the ways to stay active. In two years I will turn 30, and I will start thinking about these aspects and would answer these questions. (laughs) 4. How do you like to try new things and step out of your comfort zone? Manish- I have a strong aversion to feelings of restlessness and stagnation, which can be a source of discomfort. By taking a thoughtful and intentional approach to my diet and other aspects of life, I create a sense of structure and predictability that helps me feel more grounded and centred. Abhishek- My business keeps me out of my comfort zone all the time. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES IN BUILDING THRIVE LIVING FUTURE ROADMAP QUICK INSIGHTS

  • 17. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 17 May 2023 The Changing Meaning of Family: It’s Time to Legalize Adoption for Same-Sex Couples Mehak Walia in conversation with Shreya Kaul, a counselling psychologist and Narrative Therapy Practitioner, Ankit Vashisht, a lawyer practising in the Supreme Court, and various members of the LGBTQIA+ community. May brings in the auspicious day when we get together and celebrate the people who make our lives whole, our family, but for many same-sex couples in India, the meaning of family has long been a contentious issue. Despite the strides made towards equality, the adoption process remains out of reach for them, leaving them without the legal protections and rights that come with parenthood. For these couples, the simple act of starting a family is fraught with hurdles and roadblocks. They are forced to navigate a system that often views their love as less valid, and their families as less worthy. While we embark on this journey, to fight the necessary war, it is essential to have some legal knowledge in our arsenal. In conversation with a lawyer from the Supreme Court of India about adoption rights in India and around the globe. Ankit Vashisht, a lawyer who is currently practicing in the Supreme Court of India, specializing in matters of the constitution, arbitration, and criminal law explained, “The process of adoption in India is not easy, and it is regulated by the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA). CARA is a statutory body of the Ministry of Women and Child Development. The organization's primary function is to ensure that the best interests of the child are protected throughout the adoption process. The eligibility of prospective adoptive parents (or PAPs) is covered under Section 57 of the Juvenile Justice Act. One of the rules states that no child shall be placed in adoption to a couple unless they have had at least two years of the solid marital relationship. Same-sex couples are unable to create a two-year stable marital bond since same-sex weddings are not recognized in India, making them unfit to be PAPs.” Ankit Vashisht, lawyer
  • 18. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 18 May 2023 But this isn’t just limited to India, it is a global issue and many other countries have dealt with the same requirements in their own unique and impressive ways. While explaining the same, Ankit added, “The right to be protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation inside the European Union and the right to respect for family and life are both crucially protected by the European Court of Human Rights. The European Convention on Human Rights forbids Member States from discriminating in adoption procedures based on sexual orientation. Similarly, the value of individual liberty as enshrined in the Constitution has long been upheld in the United States of America. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the well-known case of Obergefel v. Hodges (2015) that discriminating against gays is against the spirit of the Constitution and that the value of individual liberty is equal for every person in society. This judgment has led to various judicial pronouncements and legislation legitimizing adoption for same- sex couples. In fact, despite social biases, South Africa is one of the few common-law nations that recognize same-sex couples' rights and the best interests of the children are put first.” So, even though the whole adoption process can be hard, strenuous, and challenging for parents, it is extremely worth it because they get to bring home a kid to raise and love. This beautiful right should be available to the LGBTQIA+ community too. The unavailability of the same has also ended up affecting the community members’ mental health. We spoke to a mental health professional to learn more about the same. In fact, despite social biases, South Africa is one of the few common-law nations that recognize same- sex couples' rights and the best interests of the children are put first. Shreya Kaul , counselling psychologist Narrative Therapy Practitioner Shreya Kaul (She/her), a counselling psychologist and Narrative Therapy Practitioner whose therapy is based on a queer affirmative, inclusive, feminist, and trauma-informed approach believes that “born into a very heterosexual and patriarchal narrative, people from the community are consistently stigmatized and discriminated against and they haven’t even been given access to basic rights. Now, not having this access can be a stifling and psychologically detrimental experience. Among such rights is the right to be able to adopt, and to have a family. If this changes and queer individuals are legally able to adopt, it’ll give the hope and dream that they have towards an equal future that they previously have not been able to envision. The concept of chosen families within the LGBTQIA+ community is very strong because there are individuals who have to face abandonment as a part of their journey so, to have the autonomy and choice to decide to start a family is huge for them. It will be very psychologically beneficial for them.” She further added, “Furthermore, if queer people are given the ability to adopt, it would also mean that many more children will have the opportunity to find their forever homes. Having this home, a place to belong, and people to call your family is very powerful and important. It’s also extremely psychologically beneficial for these children because this is where we learn our fundamental ideas of self. So, it will create an opportunity for both these lost spaces to find each other and find family.”
  • 19. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 19 May 2023 We also spoke to some members of the community regarding their feelings on the issue and its importance. Varsha Panikar , co-founder of Star Hopper Bittu Karthik Kondaiah Shreyas aka klaakaarjntu Varsha Panikar (they/he), a trans-non-binary individual who is the co-founder of Star Hopper, a trans-led film production company from India, believes that “All children deserve a home and love and care. Anyone who can provide a child with a safe, secure, and loving home should be able to adopt a child. Parents that do not fit into patriarchal heteronormative family structures, regardless of their gender identity, are going through the legal hassle to adopt and raise children. Anyone who’s willing to expend that much of their time, energy, and financial resources, and is committed to giving a child a good home, deserves to be a parent. They should be allowed to become parents through adoption, or new reproductive technologies, and be subject to the same type of screening used with heterosexual couples and individuals.” They further explained, “Even denying legal parent status through adoption to co-parents or second parents and discrimination against these willing, capable parents will deprive their children of benefits, rights, and privileges enjoyed by children of heterosexual married couples. Rights to property, healthcare, inheritance, custody, social security, and much more. Having said this, the stigma and discrimination around trans identities are drastically higher and lawmakers need to ensure that the rights are equally extended, to the trans community and the diverse forms of kinship that are not traditionally recognized. It’s time to legitimize non-traditional family structures which we as trans and queer folks have come to foster, nurture, and build into what some now call ‘home’.” On a similar note, Bittu Karthik Kondaiah (they/he), a trans individual who strongly believes that adoption rights are necessary exclaimed, “All queer and trans persons need to have the right to create safe and affirming family spaces for themselves. But that’s not all, it’s also extremely essential for the children. You must understand that Intersex and gender non-conforming children are also largely, being placed with cis-fender heterosexual families who believe in corrective surgeries and therapies. This is also harmful for these kids but if queer individuals were allowed to adopt, they could have a haven to call their family. It’s very essential.” Whereas, Shreyas aka klaakaarjntu, a non-binary pansexual multidisciplinary designer, passionate artist, and art instructor believes that, “It is indeed a tragedy to witness the slow decay of time as unqualified and toxic government representatives deem themselves fit to make decisions for the LGBTQIA+ community. The laws preventing consenting individuals from adopting a child, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender, are outright outrageous. It is pitiful to see these representatives and their ideological blocks ignoring the emotions of the queer community. Having come from a generation that experienced domestic violence and unhealthy relationships, this discrimination must be stopped. Children deserve supportive and affectionate homes without the hindrance of outdated laws. Love transcends boundaries regardless of orientation and gender, and it is unacceptable to tolerate discrimination. American shows have already made strides in promoting inclusivity for queer parenting, and it's high time we took notes. We must take a stand against these hateful individuals and demand the necessary changes. ``
  • 20. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 20 May 2023 Jahnvi Kataria , a dancer, member of LGBTQ+ We also spoke to Jahnvi Kataria, a dancer, a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and, a business psychologist. She is also a published writer and talent booster. Talking about adoption rights, she said, “I just cannot think of any reason anyone should be refused to adopt. As long as the individuals have the financial and mental bandwidth to take care of a child. I am a bi myself working in the corporate sector and I've always wanted to adopt, even before I came out. We all need people who want to adopt, so why say no when there are children out there who can get a better life?” So, as we celebrate Family Day, let us remember that families come in all shapes and sizes and that every family is deserving of respect, dignity, and legal recognition. Let us come together to demand change, to fight for a world where every child has the chance to grow up in a family that loves and supports them, regardless of who that family is made up of. After all, we all deserve a family’s love, don’t we?

  • 27. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 27 May 2023 Can Lingerie Help People Walk the Path Towards Self-Love? Love is an integral part of our lives and is very important for our mental and emotional well-being but the most essential form of love in our lives is, of course, self-love. To put simply, self-love is an appreciation for oneself and having a high regard for our well-being and happiness. It means taking care of our needs and not sacrificing our well-being or happiness to please others. Alas, in this fast-paced and cruel modern world where everyone is competing for resources, ideal lives and even love, it's hard to not be critical of ourselves. This makes maintaining and practising self-love all the more essential. It is necessary to be able to appreciate ourselves every day. But what makes self-love the key to long, happy and fulfilled lives? Mehak Walia in conversation with Ummang Sharma Bajpai (MWP, MBPsS), an Integrative Psychologist and the Head of Psychological Services at the Institute for the Advancement of Mental Health (IAMH), an online-first institute, established to improve access to mental wellness and mental healthcare. W hile talking about the importance of self-love, Ummang explained, “Self-love is extremely important in a person's life because it lays the foundation for a healthy and fulfilling life. Loving oneself allows individuals to establish a positive relationship with themselves - which in turn leads to feeling more confident in their abilities and sense of self-worth. Having self-love also helps a person to have better relationships with others, as they are less likely to tolerate harmful or abusive behaviour from others. Additionally, it fosters better communication - of one’s needs and boundaries. There is a growing body of research on the importance of self-love, particularly in the fields of psychology and mental health. Studies have shown that self-love is positively associated with better mental health outcomes, such as lower levels of anxiety and depression, and improved life satisfaction.” He further added, “Additionally, self-love has been linked to greater resilience and coping skills, allowing individuals to better navigate stress and adversity - which happens because a person who loves themselves is better able to cope with stress and overcome challenges. Other studies have found that self-love can also be associated with better physical health outcomes, such as improved sleep, lower levels of inflammation, and enhanced immune function. Overall, the research suggests that self-love is a crucial aspect of overall well-being and is essential for personal growth and happiness. Self-love is a critical aspect of personal growth and happiness and is necessary for a fulfilling and balanced life.” But, in the daily struggle towards self-love, a question that puzzles us all now and then is how we should love our bodies when they don't match the beauty standards. How do we feel sexy in our different body types and shapes with all their differences and flaws? Well, I might have the answer. One of the most interesting and creative ways to fall in love with yourself is via lingerie. The use of lingerie has been around for centuries, and they have been used time and again to accentuate certain body parts and our overall appeal. However now, they have become more than just tools to attract others. They have not turned into the boldest, strongest and sexiest tools for a woman's sexual expression. Ummang Sharma Bajpai (MWP, MBPsS)
  • 28. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 28 May 2023 Don’t believe me? Well, look back to the first time you came across a gorgeous piece of lingerie that made you pause. Did you end up trying it? Did your reflection in that mirror make you smile and feel special, even if was just for a split second? That is the exact power of lingerie. They have turned into symbols of accepting our sexuality in its truest form. But how do they help? Ummang believes that “wearing lingerie or fetish gear that makes you feel confident and empowered can have a positive impact on self-love. If wearing certain types of clothing makes you feel good about yourself and boosts your confidence, then it can certainly be seen as a form of self- care and self-expression. I think it’s worth acknowledging here the special relevance of self-love and the use of lingerie or fetish gear for the LGBTQIA+ community. For many individuals in the queer community, self-love can be a particularly challenging aspect of personal growth, as they may have faced ‘minority stress’ - which is discrimination, stigma, and rejection based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The use of lingerie or fetish gear can be a way for these individuals to express their sexuality and gender identity in a safe and empowering way and can help to build self-confidence and self-acceptance. “ It is also essential to note the fact that all of us have unique body types and different preferences when it comes to lingerie. They are more than just simple undergarments; they are a tool through which we feel sexy and appreciate our unique bodies in all their glory. They have the power to shatter the boxes of toxic beauty and body standards created by society as a whole. You see, wearing a nice set of lingerie of our choice is literally, one of the most empowering experiences out there. This can positively affect our emotional state by showing off our fierce and fabulous side with a layer of sexual liberation and girl power. This can also boost our self- esteem and confidence and on top of it all, it makes us feel good about our bodies thereby improving our self- image. This allows you to feel validation internally rather than seeking it from others. This can be a brilliant path to work on our self-esteem as a whole. (Image Credits: @_deb.tathagata)
  • 29. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 29 May 2023 Ummang agreed and added with a smile, “Wearing lingerie or fetish gear can help improve self-esteem for some people. It can be a way to express one's sexuality, feel confident, and embrace their body. However, it is important to note that self-esteem is a complex and multifaceted concept and is not solely determined by what one wears. Wearing lingerie or fetish gear can provide temporary confidence boosts, but it needs to be part of a wider strategy to develop a healthy relationship with self and a stable sense of self- worth. While interrelated, self-worth, self-esteem, and self-love are distinct concepts. Simply put, self-worth is the underlying belief in one's inherent value, self- esteem is an external evaluation of oneself, and self- love is a positive and compassionate attitude towards oneself. Unlike self-esteem, which can be influenced by external factors and external validation, self-love is a more stable, holistic, and internalized sense of self- worth. Plus, we must also remember that everyone's experiences and preferences are unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. So, you shouldn’t do something if you’re feeling threatened by it in any way.” But it’s also very essential to note and understand the fact that the battle towards self-love cannot just be won with lingerie. You do need other arsenals in your corner. There are several ways you can support the use of lingerie or fetish gear in the process of self-love and personal growth. While discussing these ways in detail, Ummang explained, “First and foremost, be open-minded and non-judgmental: Allow individuals to express themselves and explore their sexuality in a way that feels comfortable and empowering to them, without imposing your own opinions or prejudices. We live in a shame-based culture, so a lot of biases may covertly exist in our thoughts - it’s important to call these out and keep them in check. Next, it’s important to provide a safe and supportive environment: Create a space where individuals feel comfortable and accepted, free from judgement or shame. This will aid the process of self-discovery for them. We can also ensure that we foster body positivity: Help folks embrace their bodies, regardless of their shape or size, and focus on what makes them unique and beautiful. This enables everyone to emphasize self-love and serves as a reminder that true confidence and empowerment come from within. Importantly, providing a supportive and empowering environment, and encouraging individuals to focus on self-love and self-care is key to promoting a positive body image and positive personal growth.” Another very essential fact that we must remember is that it's important to remember that self-love is not solely dependent on external factors. Ummang expressed that, ‘True self-love comes from within. It involves valuing and accepting oneself for who they are, regardless of their appearance or external circumstances. Ultimately, what is more, important is to engage in activities that make you feel good about yourself - that empower you to be your authentic self. Whether that's wearing lingerie or fetish gear, or engaging in other forms of self-expression, the key is to focus on building a positive relationship with yourself and nurturing your well-being.” At the end of the day, whether it’s sexy lingerie, gorgeous makeup, shiny new heels or just some comfort food, it’s essential to care for and appreciate yourself while learning how to fall in love with yourself. This road might be long and hard but don’t give up and hang in there, it’s all worth it!

The pandemic, though one of the worst viral disasters to strike human life turned out to be a time frame of opportunities for some adventurous minds. Divya Kumar was introduced to Kombucha drinks during a trip to the USA. Her return coincided with the lockdown and she was pleasantly surprised to find one of her neighbours revelling in Kombucha. E ver thought of fermented sweet tea with a culture of bacteria and yeast? That is what the Kombucha drink is all about. It has stirred many a beverage lover to mull over its origins and numerous health benefits. As intriguing as its name is, this drink has caught the fancy of many and has become a must-have beverage! Divya Kumar explains the nuances of DIVS Kombucha to Canta Dadlaney and how she loves to be called, the one-woman Kombucha entrepreneur in Chennai. What’s behind the name ‘Kombucha’ and why do people state that it’s akin to a beer when actually it’s a nutritious type of tea? Kombucha has its roots in ancient China and was renowned as the Drink of Immortality with legend stating that regular drinkers would live to enjoy a life span of more than 100 years! DIVS Kombucha (DIVS is the short form of Divya and the drink is named after me) involves the traditional process which entails the science of fermentation, perhaps, that is why many compare it to a beer. To put it simply, Kombucha is to tea as wine is to grape juice. You can call it a fermented tea with a unique, natural effervescence because of its bright, tangy and refreshing taste. Our DIVS Kombuchas bubble with billions of friendly living microorganisms, these are known as probiotics and aid in digestion, support gut health, and boost immunity. Divya Kumar
  • 39. I N D I A INDIA’S FIRST INTERACTIVE MAGAZINE 39 May 2023 With no background or knowledge about the drink, how and when did you get into this? The pandemic had made me too restless for words. From baking banana bread to drinking dalgona coffee, I ran out of things to do in my mother's kitchen. One fine day, my neighbour, well into Kombucha brewing, lent me her SCOBY (Symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast), a starter culture that kickstarts fermentation. As per legend, a SCOBY should always be gifted. This gift was a turning point for me during the lockdown! How did you go about researching the ingredients and the process of making them? I am neither a microbiologist, botanist nor chef, I have no formal training in this field. I spent a lot of time, researching and studying the subject online, and poured over various journals. I then connected with experts in microbiology, to understand the science of brewing. I burnt many a midnight candle to understand the minute details of the product; from the ingredients to the brewing, the target audiences, benefits and even alternative uses. What are the key ingredients? Our Kombucha line-up typically contains a blend of unorthodox black green teas with sulphur-free cane sugar for fermentation. We have developed over 35 recipes, that involve all-natural herbs, spices, botanicals, fruits and florals, and ideally work with whatever is available as per the season. We worked with a US-based lab and discovered over six strains of probiotics in our beverages, which speaks highly of our nutritional profile. What are the nutritional benefits? Probiotics help repopulate beneficial gut flora with diverse bacteria, producing neurochemicals that improve your mood and energy levels. A healthy gut strengthens the connection between your brain and your gut to better regulate mental well-being. The active enzymes in our Kombucha help to break down foods and increase nutrient absorption, aid effective digestion and boost metabolism. Our Kombucha drinks are also rich in Vitamin B2, and C, polyphenols, lactic acid, glucuronic acid and acetic acids. Parents have reverted to telling us about how this drink has helped wean their children from serious Cola and Pepsi addiction. Also, Kombucha includes only 6 gm of sugar compared to 30-40 gm in your regular soft drinks and is free of all artificial colouring. How many flavours of Kombucha are there? For a drink that takes 25-30 days to craft, you can find DIVS Kombucha even in a place like Himachal Pradesh and enjoy at least 9-12 flavours during a peak season. Between the months of March to August, you can enjoy Nannari cola, Firecracker, Goldrush and Banganapalli bomb and between September and February, Hibiscus, Apple pie and orange peppermint. You will always find a bottle of Kombucha in this passionate brewer’s home who has witnessed some of her own customers brew this drink and start their own ventures. For her, competition is a matter of ‘the more, the merrier’. With no concrete expansion plans for the moment, Divya considers her compact brewery premises that craft thousands of litres of Kombucha, the ultimate haven.

After researching its significance, he began studying and travelling to remote villages in North East in 2012 to learn more, eventually dedicating himself to preserving the art form. In conversation with Surabhi Goel, he shares his journey of reviving Naga tattooing. M o explains that while there is now ample information available online about Naga tattooing, he began researching the art form in 2007 when information was scarce. He espouses the notion that traditions are serving as vital identity markers, abound across India, and tattoos are not an exception. They serve as powerful expressions of one's status and culture and convey narratives about their persona. In the present era, grasping the significance of tattoos, and how they contribute to the formation of our cultural expression and identity, is crucial. Previously, tattoos had been relegated to insignificance. However, Mo Naga is determined to create awareness and promote the recognition of their importance. The fruits of his labour are becoming evident, with scholars and students increasingly studying this art form, bringing it to the forefront as an indispensable component of India's cultural heritage. He endeavours to disseminate awareness among those who have discontinued tattooing due to societal influence, which has deemed tattoos to be insignificant in the context of modern-day living. He is meticulous in his approach to avoid appropriating or weakening the integrity of the art, instead inspiring individuals to delve into their ancestral heritage. To achieve this goal, he engages in extensive research, travel, and communication to grasp and manifest a creation that respects the people's sentiments. One can find him on Instagram as Headhuntersink. The artist clients are a selective group of people who are culturally aware and seek to express themselves in a meaningful way. The tattoos that he creates convey a way of life and philosophy, and the aesthetics of it reflect the majesty of nature. Although Mo Naga was once known for his realistic tattoo styles, he has shifted his focus towards promoting traditional art and its importance. Over the past 8-9 years, he has been spreading awareness about traditional art and tribal tattoos, which he specializes in. However, he is still happy to take on special requests from clients who have exciting ideas or want to express themselves through a tattoo that may not be traditional. Despite his main focus being on traditional tribal tattoos, Mo Naga is always happy to take on projects that allow him to express his artistry and create something meaningful and personal to his clients. Mo Naga is creating the Tattoo Village, a space for traditional tattooing using thorns and natural pigments in a village setting, where people can learn and share. He recognizes the lack of such a space in contemporary society and hopes to preserve and promote the art of traditional tattooing. The Village will also have a Tattoo Garden and serve as a platform for people interested in traditional tattoos. Mo Naga's ancestral village is the chosen location, and he has been appointed by the Ministry of Textiles Handloom of Manipur to support and promote handloom. Mo Naga plans to work with other cultural expressions of the people in the future, but for now, his focus and priority lie on the Tattoo Village. He cautions against rushing the process, warning that a lack of research and understanding can result in confusion or even distortion of traditional art. Quick Intakes 1. Who is your favourite tattoo artist? My favourite artist is a traditional artist who had a significant impact on me, the artist, who was 86 years old, did a tattoo on me in 2016 and sadly passed away soon after. I look up to her and the traditional art and culture that she embodied. 2. Besides tattooing, what other forms of art do you enjoy, and how do they influence your work? I am very much interested in making furniture, particularly chairs, but due to my current commitments to travel and generate funds for building the tattoo village, I do not have time to pursue this interest at the moment. Other art forms that I love to work on are making music with my friends and working with women's organizations to protect handloom. 3. When you're not working, how do you like to spend your free time, and do you have any hobbies or interests outside of tattooing? I enjoy making music and designing, including creating furniture. However, I don’t have much time for these activities because I am focused on studying, promoting, and talking about Naga tattooing, as well as travelling to generate funds for the tattoo village. When I am in the forest, I am busy building the village, which involves cutting trees, building houses, and working on the ground. When not in the forest, I travel to different places. 4. What is your first love- Creating Music or Designing? I enjoy music, but the design is an inherent part of my being. Despite not having had much time to pursue it lately, I view my work on the tattoo project as a duty rather than a passion or love.
