Tomols were lightweight canoes made of redwood or pine planks that were used by the Chumash people of California for fishing, trading, and transportation. The Chumash built tomols by splitting logs into planks, leveling and smoothing the planks, securing them together with hemp rope, and sealing the cracks with asphalt mixed with pine oil to make the boats waterproof. Tomols could carry two people and goods like tuna, otter fur, and steatite over long distances to trade with other tribes.
