- I’m going to be saying a few things around being a compliance superhero…. although most of what i’m covering counts in any job role.
- SO, i want to start with the question posed in the theme of this event. Can LegalTech change the world for good? - A bit about me….This is my family…. 12 years ago I knew very little about kids or the responsibility of being a ‘dad’ For me part of the fun of being a parent is the unknown + challenge of working stuff out as you go
- I’m 8 months into my role at Libryo and in a similar way I’m on a great journey and I’m learning SO much. SO i’m not standing hear as a COMPLIANCE professional... I’m here to connect and work with like minded people
- I also make cider….not totally relevant to this talk at all….just something i enjoy. In fact this year we made 1000L!

- SO, a few weeks in to my job. I decided to pick up the phone and speak to EHS & sustainability professionals. From this I compiled a survey. It was really interesting to hear about everyone’s goals and challenges.
- No matter what our background. We’re all on a journey, we all have challenges….. based on the people i spoke to some of these included: Lack of time & Information overload Getting STUFF done VS Managing people is a key pain point Tinkering with Process VS TECH/software another major challenge The thing is…..Technology can be a massive disrupter if not managed properly!
- In our roles, MOST of us would agree that we all want to be the BEST we can. Apart from YOUR skills…. Your job is made easier [OR harder] by the people you work with and the processes you follow
- If you’re interested in DRAWING on your teams strengths… Check out this Strengths Finder book It’s helps identify your 5 core strengths and where you may need support
- It can be hard. Getting the right balance right between: your team [staff or people], technology and process In fact, process should always come before technology, Too much tech and a lack of process is bad for any business.
- SO Think about your relationship between people, processes and technology like this: 1- At the heart of business is people and our relationship to each other…..and the earth if you care about sustainability 2- Then comes the processes that help us achieve our business objectives. 3- Followed by technology & automation to aid effeciancy.
- Technology is a great enabler. The story and evolution of the mobile phone has been epic so far! How we use our phones today could NOT be more different to what was first imagined in the 80s NOW people are talking about AI and Machine Learning as the next big evolution… But unlike the mobile phone, it’s progression is non visual it’s all ‘CODE & CLOUDS’
- AI has been around for ages, since the 50’s I found out recently! Computer processing speeds and cloud memory has ramped up it’s progression Nividia is the leading producer of GPU’s (graphics processing units) which help aid the progression of machine learning. Some say their chip technology has overtaken Intel. To QUOTE a blog post from nvidia… “The easiest way to think about the relationship between AI,ML & DL is to visualize them as concentric circles with AI. AI is the idea that came first [the largest], then machine learning — which blossomed later, and finally deep learning — which is driving today’s AI explosion” This kind of TECH is good at memory & search. SO principles to facts - manual or boring tasks BUT it’s no good at emotional decisions!!
- SO, thinking about how you responded to the earlier AI POLL question…. How do these advances in tech affect our work and culture? Can AI spark a 2nd industrial revolution? Have a look at this TEDx Talk VIDEO by Kevin Kelly earlier this year…
- Just like legal compliance...i KNOW MY LIMITS when it comes to Machine Learning SO For anyone wanting to dig deeper on the subject, i would highly recommend checking out episode 114 of the SaaStr podcast with Tom. It will melt your brain…..in a good way!
- At Libryo we think that machine & DEEP learning is going to really assist us into the future.…and we’re really excited by that. We want to enable EHS & Sustainability professionals to “plug in” to this new utility – A superpower tool! (if you like).
- There are lots of companies taking advantage of this new industrial revolution. This is an already outdated road map of legal tech startups from legal geek Libryo is on red line - blue arrow Red = opperations/compliance, Green = document automation, Yellow = Machine learning…..ect There’s a relationship between FINTECH, REGTECH, LEGALTECH…...ALL good tech is designed to help SOLVE a problem
- Libryo was designed from the ground up for non legal compliance pro’s…. it’s kind of like a bridge between compliance pros and legal teams We exists to make it easier for compliance professionals, EHS & Sustainability managers to know what sustainability obligations they face, whether by law, or otherwise. Part of our culture & believe is that we want to empower our users with knowledge
- At the end of the day, we’re excited by the potential of Deep Learning, but we still place our ultimate faith in people! Deep Learning is not replacing humans, but rather making more space for human thinking on tasks that ‘bots’ CAN’T do….like apply reason. Peter our CEO has a very clear vision on how we want to embace these technologies within the our product roadmap
- SO, in summary… We believe legaltech can change the world for good, but only if we collaborate around it…. and… 1- Connect with like minded People...because i believe we learn and grow more through eye contact 2- Think about your challenges and question ‘best practice’ for you & your company 3- Optimise your processes [before thinking about bringing too much tech/software onboard] 4- Use TECH to enhance your processes and help solve your challenges and business objectives 5- AND lastly...HAVE FUN...because being a superhero shouldn’t be boring
- Our single biggest super power is KNOWLEDGE….and the best kind of knowlage share is when people come together SO on that note….
