Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. INT. WEASLY WIZARD WHEEZES, EARLY MORNING
Camera pans through a grimy window, illuminating dust as it
twists through the air in the store. Different objects click
and tinkle softly in the store. Camera pans upward and
settles on a moving portrait of Fred and George Weasly both
holding a pair of scissors at the opening of the store. The
animals and gadgets increase their noise and activity as a
muffled conversation is heard from outside. The camera moves
through the store as the clarity of the conversation
increases.
MOLLY V.O
Honestly George, your father and I
would feel much more comfortable if
you would just let us come in and
help out around the shop. Just for
the first few weeks...
EXT. WEASLY WIZARD WHEEZES, EARLY MORNING
GEORGE leans against the door frame, looking ashen. MOLLY and
ARTHUR stand awkwardly, waiting for GEORGE to respond. ARTHUR
gazes steadily at GEORGE while MOLLY fidgets. Unable to
continue the silence, she presses on.
MOLLY
I just don’t think you should be
going in there alone. Not for the
first time-
GEORGE lift’s his head and surveys MOLLY. MOLLY takes the
warning and stops talking. ARTHUR wraps one arm around her
shoulders and kisses the top of her head. MOLLY closes her
eyes, trying not to cry.
ARTHUR
Come on Molly.
MOLLY opens her eyes and looks at GEORGE. GEORGE bows his
head, refusing to meat her gaze. MOLLY reaches up and brushes
GEORGE’s hair out of his eyes, exposing his destroyed ear.
GEORGE stoops a little to accommodate her affection.
MOLLY
Well, we’re here anytime you need
us.
MOLLY begins to get teary.
MOLLY (CONT’D)
And I expect an owl at least once a
week.
ARTHUR gently steers her away, leaving GEORGE standing alone
in the door way. GEORGE gingerly pulls out a key and inserts
it into the locked door.
3. He unlocks the door, takes a deep breath, and quickly enters
the store, slamming the door behind him.
INT. WEASLY WIZARD WHEEZES, EARLY MORNING
The sound of the door slamming reverberates through the shop.
GEORGE stands, back pressed against the door with his eyes
tightly shut. For a moment there is silence, then GEORGE
breathes in, deeply. With the breath, the store comes back to
life with sound. GEORGE continues to stand with his eyes
closed. Gently, he runs his fingers over the displays, slowly
moving forward into the shop. His hands find the banister to
the stairs and he makes his way up them. One creaks loudly,
startling him enough to cause him to open his eyes.
The portrait of FRED and GEORGE stare down at GEORGE. GEORGE
lowers his gaze and breathes deeply. He continues up the
stairs with his eyes open.
INT. LIVING AREA ABOVE WEASLY WIZARD WHEEZES, EARLY MORNING
GEORGE sits in an armchair, staring at its empty twin. Camera
roams over everything in the apartment that has a twin, tea
cups, side tables, foot stools. GEORGE stands up and makes
two cups of tea, lying one on the side table next to FRED’S
armchair. GEORGE stands awkwardly before the empty chair. He
fidgets with his trouser pocket and pulls out two wands. He
surveys them both carefully and gives the one in his left had
a wave. A torrent of white sparks flow from it. He tries the
same maneuver with his right hand and nothing happens. GEORGE
tries again with more gusto. Again, the wand in his right
hand fails to produce any kind of reaction. GEORGE’s grip on
his left want tightens and a ball of fire spurts from it,
burning a hole in the floor. GEORGE gives a start and he
places FRED’s wand next to the cup of tea and continues to
survey the scene.
INT. BATHROOM ABOVE WEASLY WIZARD WHEEZES, EARLY MORNING
GEORGE surveys the bathroom, with two toothbrushes, two
towels, two combs sitting in various places throughout the
room. He breathes deeply and slowly removes his tie.
GEORGE stands in the shower head pressed against the tiles as
the water cascades over him.
GEORGE exits the shower, wraps himself in a towel. He catches
movement out of the corner of his eye. Realizing its the
mirror, he approaches it. Leaning against the sink he
cautiously raises his head to study his reflection. Slowly
his hands explore his face, pulling and tightening different
areas. He grins widely, pouts, sticks out his tongue, winks
deftly, puffs his cheeks. Nervously, he reaches for his hair
and pats it down over his mangled ear. Now the resemblance is
uncanny.
2.
4. GEORGE stares at himself, breathing heavily with his eyes
flicking over every inch of himself. The mirror cracks across
his face. GEORGE looks down at his fist that has connected
with the mirror. He grimaces, gritting his teeth and begins
punching the mirror over and over again so it cascades to the
ground. GEORGE grabs his wand, crying and begins blasting
everything in the bathroom. The towels set fire, the pair of
toothbrushes explode, the combs slowly smoulder. He sinks to
the ground as white plaster settles around him, covering him
in a white ash.
GEORGE twirls his wand in his hand, considering it. Time
passes and he remains seated on the floor. He places the wand
in the center of his forehead and furrows his brow in
concentration. A few tense moments pass and GEORGE unclenches
himself and lets out a long breath, dropping his wand to his
chin. After a few seconds, a beard begins to grow and his
eyebrows gain thickness. Both his beard and his hair slowly
turn into a deeper red. GEORGE sighs and slowly extricates
himself from the rubble that was his bathroom.
INT. WEASLY WIZARD WHEEZES, MID MORNING
GEORGE is down stairs, carefully tidying the shop. He is
dressed in a bright purple suit with a clashing maroon vest.
He feeds the various different creatures, dusts a display,
polishes love potions.
The bell above the door chimes as it is pushed open. GEORGE
cautiously walks around a glass cabinet full of teeth to see
what the cause of the noise is.
PERCY stands awkwardly in the threshold, wringing his bowler
hat. They both survey each other.
PERCY
Even with that beard, you look
exactly like him.
GEORGE
Maybe he just looks exactly like
me.
They pause.
GEORGE (CONT’D)
Why are you here?
PERCY
I quit my job at the Ministry and I
thought you could use some help.
GEORGE nods to himself.
GEORGE
I kills me, knowing that you were
there and I wasn’t.
3.
