A branch of science, aesthetics, deals with the study and interpretation of beauty theory. It's the
study and philosophy of beauty, as well as the study of its nature in art. The role of aesthetics is
vital in everyday activities like speaking, sitting, eating, dressing, and talking. Our aesthetic feelings
towards artefacts or expressive activities can be expressed through the use of all our senses.
There are three types in aesthetics. These are Imitation,
Liberal Qualities, Formalism & Design Qualities,
Emotionalism & Expressive Experience.
i. Imitation, Liberal Qualities: This focuses on realistic
presentation of the subject matter. It is an imitation
of real life or the real world. It is accurate
representations or objects found in nature.
ii. Formalism and Design Qualities. This theory of
aesthetics focuses on the design characteristics of
artifacts. It is concerned with the arrangement of
elements that are guided by design principles or
composition, such as balance, unity and proportion.
Although one or two of these aesthetic theories may be
used to judge or criticize an artwork, depending on its
purpose and type, it is best to use all three theories
when critiquing works of art. It is important to use all
three aesthetic theories when critiquing artworks.
Aesthetic Education and Training
Education or aesthetic training is the study or learning
about the environment through the human senses in
order to develop our sense of aesthetics. It takes time to
learn aesthetics and it is not easy to become an
expert. Aesthetic experience is a combination of
knowledge and experience over a long time.
