The Bulgarian Association of Family Therapy is hosting a two-day workshop in Sofia on September 12-13, 2015 featuring Dr. Paolo Bertrando. The workshop will focus on dialogue and emotions in family therapy, exploring how elements in therapy are in constant dialogue and how emotions can be understood as "emotional systems". Participants can bring cases for discussion and Dr. Bertrando will use his own cases as examples. Early registration fees are 70-90 euro for students/members and 90-110 euro for others, with payment options of bank transfer or cash.

"Dialogue and Emotions in the Therapeutic System" with
Dr Paolo Bertrando, MD, PhD
on September 12-13th (Saturday and Sunday), 2015 in Sofia - 10:00 AM - 18:00 PM
The workshop with Dr. Bertrando, called "Dialogue and Emotions in the
Therapeutic System", is based on the ideas of his book The Dialogical Therapist,
according to which all elements of therapy are in constant dialogue with each other –
the knowledge of the trainer with the knowledge of the trainee, theory and practice,
the self and emotions of the therapist with those of the clients.
The workshop will also present Dr. Bertrando's current conceptualization of
emotions in systemic practice as “emotional systems”. In his book Emotions and the
Therapist, which will be published in 2015, he discusses the emotional
characteristics of human systems – how we analyze these emotional characteristics,
how the emotions of the therapist are placed in the therapeutic context, how we can
work effectively with the emotional interplay of the family.
Participants will be invited to bring in their own cases for discussion and Dr.
Bertrando will use examples from his cases for illustration.
About Dr Bertrando
Paolo Bertrando MD, PhD, graduated in
medicine and specialized in psychiatry in Milan,
Italy. He was trained in systemic family therapy
by Luigi Boscolo and Gianfranco Cecchin in the
1980s, and used initially the Milan Approach for
working with families with a member diagnosed
with schizophrenia. He later joined Boscolo and
Cecchin’s Milan Center for family Therapy, where
he was a trainer from 1993 to 2002.
In 2003, he co-founded the Episteme systemic training center, where he
was director until 2012. Currently, Dr Bertrando is а scientific director of the
Systemic-Dialogical School in Bergamo, where he is trying to develop a brand of
systemic therapy closer to a dialogical position and practice.
He published several articles and books about systemic therapy, the most
relevant are the two books co-written with Luigi Boscolo, The Times of Time (New
York, Norton, 1993), and Systemic Therapy with Individuals (London, Karnac
Books, 1996). His latest book published in 2007 is The Dialogical Therapist
(London, Karnac Books). His next book, Emotions and the Therapist, is due for
publication in 2015.
Dr Bertrando has travelled widely holding workshops and seminars in
Italy, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Greece, UK, Ireland, Chile, Columbia, Mexico,
Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.
