The Center for ADVANCING UH Faculty is interested in engaging
stakeholders in its mission to achieve gender equity and diversity among
the UH faculty. In doing so, it seeks to provide opportunities to campus and
community organizations to partner with its programs and activities. Such
partnering or support may include listing an event on the ADVANCE
calendar, co-sponsoring an event consistent with the ADVANCE mission
or requesting an ADVANCE representative attend a sponsored event.

2. The University of Houston has been awarded a National
Science Foundation (NSF) Institutional Transformation
ADVANCE grant to create the Center for ADVANCING
UH Faculty Success. The goal of the NSF ADVANCE
program is to increase the number and success of
women faculty in the science, technology, engineering,
mathematicism and behavioral sciences fields.
The five-year ADVANCE grant supports sustainable
activities and programs that are part of a systemic
effort to transform the institution. The University of
Houston is the fifth institution of higher education
in Texas to receive an NSF ADVANCE award, joining
the University of Texas at El Paso, Rice University,
Texas A&M University and the University of Texas Pan
American. ADVANCE is the great “connector” uniting
participating institutions in their efforts to expand the
pool of talented people and provide opportunities.
Increasing the number of women faculty in
STEM, including women of color, will strengthen
our institutions and more equitably utilize the
exceptional talents of our diverse citizenry.

Transformative goals of the
Center for ADVANCING UH
Faculty Success:
1. RECRUIT and retain more women STEM faculty at
senior, mid-career and junior faculty levels, with an
emphasis on increasing the percentage of women STEM
and STEM women of color ranked faculty to levels at or
above the academic national averages.
2. INCREASE the support and representation of women
STEM faculty in administrative leadership positions
(department, college, and university-level).
3. ENHANCE the University of Houston’s infrastructure
to make gender equity and diversity campus-wide
priorities by improving awareness and climate, and by
institutionalizing successful ADVANCE activities.
