Gave a talk at the N.I.P.R. (National Institute of Personnel Research, which was part of the HSRC) Colloquium
series on Researching Romance Fiction, Johannesburg, 16 February 1990.
Delivered a Research seminar on How Does One Research Romance Fiction? Research Seminar Series, University
of the Witwatersrand, 26 February 1991.
Delivered a paper on Consuming Fictions: Typologies of Romance Fiction, Research Seminar Series, University of
the Witwatersrand, 27 April 1990.
Presented the following questions for discussion: Feminism and The Novel; Gender, Desire and Sexuality; The
"Pre-Oedipal" Narrative?, University of the Witwatersrand, Wednesday 17 July 1990. This was the first in a series of
postgraduate workshops I initiated.
Part of a panel talking about eating disorders, live on 702 radio station, 7 August 1991.
Invited to present a talk on: The Use of Statistics in Social Science Research, to Honours Students in the Politics
Department, University of the Witwatersrand, 27 May 1994.
The Masters was entitled: From the Daughter's Seduction to the Production of Desire: Why do women read the
romance? and was completed at Wits in 1992.
Lecturing
Feminism & Literary Criticism, 1990. Compiled, presented and marked the entire course given to Honours
students, the Comparative Literature Department, University of the Witwatersrand. The course covered a wide
range of topics, but basically entailed theoretical discussions and debates about the 'female' text, the female body,
and the female body as text.
General, 1990-1994. Other lecturing given on an ad-hoc basis to Honours and undergraduate students, on the 19th
Century Novel & Feminism in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and on Romance Publishing
in Africa to the Department of African Literature.
Committees
Briefly involved with the Centre for Health Policy Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand in terms of
constructing a policy dealing with issues of violence against women.
Founder Member of FACT - Feminist Alliance, Central Transvaal, 1991 & 1992.
FREE-LANCE WORK: 1989-1993
Data-processing:
Data entry: questionnaire for a History Masters student, investigating museum attendance of South Africans.
Design of questionnaire, entry of data for a joint project of the Black Sash and IDASA into household incomes.
The report on income distribution was utilised in their final publication.
Ad hoc consultancy:
Advised an adult literacy co-ordinator on how to institute and implementing a literacy programme in a company in
terms of the company dynamics involved (eg., ensure that performance on the course is part of the employee’s
overall performance appraisal, how to integrate the attendance records, monitor performance, and ensure that
functional literacy results.)
Advised on the various research aspects of a peer counselling AIDS education process whereby AIDS educational
programme were to be introduced into informal settlements in the greater Gauteng area.
