Results of an informal survey I gave at the beginning of the semester last fall -- I asked students questions about writing, compiled the results, and shared them in class.
The school has been invaded by witches, ghosts, monsters and skeletons as a result of a magic spell, with teachers unable to recognize their pupils. It seems to be a Halloween celebration gone wrong, with supernatural creatures taking over the school playground, teachers' room, and corridors everywhere.

Riddhi Maru submitted a paper on William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" for her English class. The 3 page paper provides a summary of the plot of the play. It describes how Hamlet becomes depressed after his father's death and his mother's hasty remarriage. It outlines Hamlet's plan to confirm his uncle's guilt in killing the king by having players perform a play depicting the murder. The paper then summarizes the key events that follow, including Hamlet killing Polonius, being sent to England, returning for Ophelia's funeral, and his final confrontation with Laertes that leads to the death of Hamlet, the queen, and the king.

Inmunidad frente a virus, bacterias, hongosMelissa S
What Can Composition Learn from Bloggers\' Civic Writing? Tapping into the AgoraClancy Ratliff

Presentation I gave for a workshop on Web 2.0Clancy Ratliff
The document discusses using blogs and social bookmarking tools to create learning communities. It recommends having one group blog for small classes where students post topics and comment on each other's posts. For blogs, it suggests occasional fun topics and grading based on participation only. For social bookmarking, it recommends showing students the instructor's bookmarks as examples and creating a shared account for students to collaboratively build an online resource of sources. The outcomes of social bookmarking include students thinking about course topics outside of class and recognizing how topics overlap.
Presentation I gave at my dissertation defenseClancy Ratliff
The document analyzes gender roles and political discourse in weblog writing. It discusses how masculinity is often built into technology and how computer culture emerged from male-dominated fields. Research shows men write more in online discussions. The document also examines how women are using blogging for feminist purposes and creating new public spaces for writing. Common themes in discussions of the lack of women bloggers include claims that men started blogging earlier, that evolutionary psychology makes men more politically vocal, and that women lack interest or time for politics.
Presentation I gave for the Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship recipients and c...Clancy Ratliff
This document summarizes Clancy Ratliff's research project on the "Where are the women?" discussions on political weblogs from 2002-2005. The project aims to conduct a rhetorical analysis of this key moment when blogging emerged as a new form of public communication. It will examine assumptions about gender, politics, and communication styles, and explore how blogging compares to Habermas' model of the public sphere. Research questions focus on similarities and differences to previous work on gender in online communication, and what the case can contribute to understanding blogging as a public forum.
Introduction to Blogging presentation for a continuing ed classClancy Ratliff
This document provides an overview of weblogs or blogs, including their definition, anatomy, potential audiences and uses. It discusses how to promote and network a blog to gain readers. It describes several potential uses of blogs, such as for project management, knowledge sharing, citizen journalism and personal journaling. The document also outlines some legal and ethical considerations for blogging, including issues around defamation, intellectual property, privacy and more.
The document discusses several questions and issues related to using blogs in writing pedagogy, including whether to have individual student blogs or class/group blogs, privacy concerns if using real names, whether blogging should be optional or required, dealing with outside participation and comments, assessing blog posts, creating prompts vs. letting students choose their own topics, and best practices for integrating blogs into class discussions. It provides contact information for two people who can help answer questions about implementing blogs in teaching.
CCCC Presentation 2006 on Peer-to-Peer ReviewClancy Ratliff
The document summarizes a public discussion that took place on weblogs about the use of new technologies in education. Key points of consensus from the discussion include: access to technology is often not the real issue but treated as one; many innovative tools like blogs are free; and educators still need to study emerging technologies that are shaping culture, whether adopted or not. The discussion is compared to traditional peer review processes, noting differences like public comments, open participation, and consensus building in peer-to-peer review versus private reviews and gatekeeping in traditional models. Questions are raised about using peer-to-peer review in scholarly journals and classrooms.
Negotiating and Regulating Plagiarism in Everyday Blogging PracticesClancy Ratliff
The document discusses plagiarism in blogging practices. It describes instances where the author's blog posts were plagiarized by other bloggers. The author caught some plagiarists by accident and others using the plagiarism detection service Copyscape. The author provides information about Copyscape and includes banners to add to websites to warn against plagiarism. The author suggests future research could study Copyscape as a non-academic plagiarism detection service compared to academic services like TurnItIn.
