Adolf Hitler had a difficult childhood that influenced his extremist views and actions as an adult. He was born in 1889 to an authoritarian father who beat him regularly and a mother who provided the only love in his life until she passed away from breast cancer when Hitler was a teenager. This devastated him and he began to resent the Jewish doctor who treated his mother. After failing to get into art school, he developed nationalist beliefs and strongly identified with Germany over Austria. During World War 1, he was inspired by German patriotism but appalled by chemical weapons. He rose to power in Germany after the war by promising to restore the country to greatness with his charismatic speeches appealing to those struggling economically.
