Additive Manufacturing, Can Polymers Challenge Metals?

Editor's Notes

  • #3 To discribe Sirris in 2 words We have approx 140 experts and expertise in 5 main domains: ICT – Advanced Manufacturing – Mechatronics – Materials and Sustainability
  • #4 ICT = big data, cloud computing, soft as service MATERIALS = plastics, composites, metals, coatings, nano MECHATRONICA = machinery, smart sensors, eco mechatronics ADVANCED MANUF = AM, Smart production, microfabrication, … SUSTAINABILITY = MTLS mgmt, processes, energy
  • #5 Some numbers regarding our AM department
  • #7 Changing paradigms Where internet and connectivity are paving the way Internet/connection is enabler
  • #8 How long before we can add: 3D Hubs > connecting makers with producers > clients with printers Software Platforms enables entrepeneur to start B AM is enabler for production Local, on demand, personal production AM is enabler for Producing start ups – hardware exponent!
  • #9 Google went from search-engine > operating system > app platform > hardware platform With google car but also with ARA Now it is working on a module platform: a pilot in Puerto Rico was cancelled but they will test it early 2016 in US. You can build your own phone to your likes/needs (lego style), but you can also build your own module and sell it in the android market. Just as you have app builders right now this will trigger module builders sooner than later. Zeiss for camera module? Samsung for display module? Duracell for battery module? Nike for fitness module? KBC for banking/payment module? TomTom for GPS module? You for another module?
  • #10 Quite an interesting evolution because Until now you were obliged to buy a premium phone with premium price tag if you would want 1 premium feature. Now it will be possible to just spend money on what you think is important for your phone. You can have several premium features and other standard or left out You can swap, change and upgrade whenever you feel it is needed Eg. When you want to take a selfie you need a different camera than when you go travel
  • #11 3D printed bike accesories Gps mounts Go pro mounts From idea to product in 2 weeks Extreme fast TTM – response to changing products No (limit) stock – production on demand > service provider Customizable – color, tekst, fit Other: RS Print orthopedic soles; UNIQ esthetic prosthetics; Normal earphones; Protos eye wear Also: Services: 3D Hubs; Twikit; 3DLT (service printer) ; MatterIO (worry free manufacturing); materialise + i.materialise Hardware: TripodMaker; Makerbot; Electroloom (fabric printer); CLIP;
  • #12 Foot scan Customized support – physical perfect match – activity match Flexibility/support due to design, not only by material Scan-print-ready Scan-produce-test-rework-test-ready
  • #13 Traditional production Rigid system – long change overs – few variants Sequenced steps – complex manufacturing processes - assembly Central production – 1000’s of km’s before it’s sold Stock and warehouse mgmt!
  • #14 Each printer can print variety of products within each job! Extremely agile – customization ‘one stop’ production > finising & packaging Networked factories – production close to end customer – last mile Negative cashflow – sold before produced No stock
  • #15 WOW AM must be Holy grail Not! Should be used with knowledge and care. Only high value parts and with holistic approach/TCO/
  • #16 Material efficiency – we can only use material there were needed Flow optimalization – create complex channels inside your part Function integration – complexity for free – multiple functions in 1 part without assembly Mass customization – serie production with unique parts (dental implants/insoles..)
  • #17 Efficient material use – less engery – less raw material = cost Optimal flow, internal channels - less pressure drops, best possible cooling = better performance Integrated functions – more features – less assembly = better quality Customization of any single part – no extra cost – free complexity = super agile production
  • #18 Revenue from materials 640$ in 2014 WHOLERS
  • #19 Split up in polymers and metals According to Wholers +/-300 polymers +/- 50 Metals
  • #20 But is we see what is being produced with the materials We see a big discrepancy Polymers more gadgets, prototypes, DIY markets Low end parts
  • #21 Metals more functional high value parts > aerospace/automotive/… Premium markets aerospace High value parts True disruptive technology
  • #22 Chicken or the egg Nowadays polymer companies generate only a fraction of their revenu from additive manufacutring Therefor they don’t invest heavily in developments of new materials Therefor the rise of polymer printing remains dominantly in low end applications and gadgets
  • #23 Chicken or the egg Nowadays polymer companies generate only a fraction of their revenu from additive manufacutring Therefor they don’t invest heavily in developments of new materials Therefor the rise of polymer printing remains dominantly in low end applications and gadgets
  • #24 ONLY EXCEPTION FDM Patent expired 2009 – move to consumer printing Eg materials available for professional printing
  • #25 And materials available for rep rap printing – only the newest materials listed. BM – Razor Razorblade Vs open source – innovation, new companies, wide use
  • #26 What is needed: start new development from strengths of AM not from what is available right now. You will end up with great materials that are usable in AM, which will lead to great applications, which will lead to High value parts, which will lead to premium revenu, which will lead to …
