Activity Plan
Topic: Scientists
Preassessment: We think the children know how scientists look such as wearing lab coats and
glasses. We also think that they know that scientists are smart and that they investigate through
experiments. We think they have had experience with scientists through reading about them in
books and learning about them through television shows. We concluded that the children might
not know about chemical reactions and how we can mix different things to get different
outcomes. Through this activity we hope the children will learn that different inputs will result in
different outcomes.
Idea to Be Emphasized: Mixing different ingredients results in different reactions and different
outcomes.
Curriculum Area Focus: Science, Math, and Fine Motor Skills
Title of Activity:
Description of Activity: Students will mix and measure different substances to result in different
chemical reactions and different end results. Through this children will learn that only certain
ingredients will produce a reaction that they like and others produce no reaction at all. Through
this they will learn by trial and error and continue to mix ingredients, under adult supervision.
The students will participate in an experiment by changing constants and trying new things.
Material Needed: Salt, water, baking soda, vinegar, cornstarch, bowls and cleaning materials to
clean up afterward
Idaho Early Learning Guideline:
Goal: Goal #43 Cause and Effect
Indicator: The Students participate in a trial and error activity.
Teaching Strategy: Provide Opportunities for children to be successful in mixing and making
different substances and chemical reactions through an experiment.
