A value proposition exists at the intersection of two innovations - IM clinical practice and a crowdfunding research platform – at this nexus arises the potential solutions to address the U.S. healthcare Triple AIM: better care, better outcomes, lower costs. Crowdfunding is a “socially mediated phenomenon” based on intrinsic trust individuals place on shared connections and a willingness to fund projects or causes based on passion alone. What gets funded is what strikes a chord with funders. The passage of the 2012 JOBS Act has resulted in a flood of crowdfunding platforms that have raised over $5.1 billion. Crowdfunding is being utilized for medical research. Health philanthropists and impact investors are collaborating in new ways to make a bigger impact and build capacity, however they want to see buy-in before taking on risk. Crowdfunding mechanisms provide an automatic feedback loop for concepts and give indication of risk prior to investor venture. At the other side of this nexus a crippling healthcare system has produced lower outcomes/higher costs fast approaching 20% of GDP. Evidence suggests that IM practices is effective and could ease the pain in our healthcare system. Barriers exist for clinical practice of IM, based on lack of sufficient evidence and funded research. NCCIH’s portion of the total NIH budget remains at less than 1% and PCORI is not focused on comparative studies of conventional interventions with IM in seeking better outcomes. Creating a crowdfunding research platform is an intriguing proposition that could engage mindful investment in research methodology for IM clinical practices. At this nexus – a crowdfunding IM/CAM research platform - all those who are passionate about a healthcare system that promotes health creation and treats the whole person through holistic approaches that optimize healing, could be funders such as philanthropists, impact investors, patients, and practitioners alike.

Online food recommender systems have recently become an active field of research. While there is growing body of work investigating how online food recommender systems could potentially be designed to better meet the users’ preferences, to date less research has tried to understand how people make their food choices online, how this behavior can be modeled and even potentially changed. Why might we want to change behavior? According to the World Health Organization around 80% of cases of heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes could be avoided if people would implement a healthier diet. Health-aware food recommender technologies have been touted as a valuable asset in achieving the ambitious goal of developing systems, which positively impact on the food choices people make. For example, they may help people to implement a healthier diet by suggesting healthier versions of a similar meal they typically like. In this talk, I will present our latest research on health-aware online food recommender systems. I will show how people upload, bookmark or rate online recipes in large online food communities and how contextual factors and biases such as seasonality, temporality, social context, presentation of the recipe or gender of the recipe author have an impact on how popular online recipes are and how they are perceived. Furthermore, I will reveal to what extent these factors and biases can be exploited to model and predict the user’s online food choices. To conclude, I will present some preliminary work aiming to exploit choice biases to nudge people towards healthier online recipes and thereby change the user’s short-term food choices.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a powerful tool to track progress towards a sustainable society that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The research community, including librarians as information professionals and publishers, have a key role in delivering high quality information to researchers, organizations and policy makers in order to act on the world that we all live in. The global societal issue I have chosen to research for my final paper is Climate change. Further research is needed because many things can cause change to the climate, which is why it is essential to choose a subtopic of climate change. The subtopic that I have chosen is the oil industry’s problem between profits and CO2 emissions. The oil industry is trying to meet demand but also causing change to the climate through emissions. More research is needed to develop points and evidence, which are needed for both sides of the argument. Research is also necessary to create a possible solution. Provide a clear and concise thesis statement that includes a solution to the global societal issue (see Writing a Thesis Statement (Links to an external site.) for assistance). Carbon Dioxide emissions emitted by oil companies contribute to climate change, and a possible solution is providing oil companies bonuses or tax exemptions for exceeding emission regulations. Explain how this global societal issue impacts a specific population. The global societal issue of climate change impacts the entire world population. There are oil and natural gas companies all around the world meeting the growing demand of oil and gas. There is not one specific population that this global issue impacts. Locate a peer-reviewed scholarly source and provide statistical data that you found surprising on the topic. In the scholarly source, Krauss (2019) states, "Chevron and Occidental, which have each taken seats on Carbon Engineering's board, refused to disclose their investments. The company says it raised a total of $68 million in its most recent funding round to expand the pilot and develop its first commercial plant" (pg. 1). That is a lot of money, but to those companies, it is just a drop in the bucket, but that isn't what is most surprising. Most surprising is that there is no product, machine, or process outside of testing mode that works. What is Chevron (who is one of the leading oil companies) doing with the money invested since it has not found a way to remove carbon from the climate? There were no numbers to put with the dollar amount of what they were going to do by a certain time. I find that very surprising and a bit intriguing. It has nothing to do with availability or how possible it is to reduce emissions but a matter of who will do it. According to Krauss (2019), "A few companies, including Royal Dutch Shell and BP, are linking compensation to emissions reductions" (pg. 1). Even countries that are not as big of producers as chevron and other companies are doing what they can to increase spending to have clean energy.
