Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides reacting with water, oxygen, and other chemicals in the atmosphere. These emissions come from natural sources like volcanoes and human sources such as fossil fuel burning. Acid rain can damage ecosystems, buildings and historical monuments, and also lower pH levels in lakes and streams negatively impacting aquatic life.
