The Academic Word List (AWL) was created in 2000 by analyzing academic texts to identify 570 word families commonly found across different subject areas but not among the most frequent 2000 words in English. The words are divided into 10 sublists based on frequency. The purpose of the AWL is to help learners of academic English target important vocabulary needed for university-level study across various disciplines. Exercises are provided to help students learn the words on each sublist.
