THE IMPACT OF DIVORCE ON CHILDREN 2
Abstract
Currently, the United States has the highest divorce rate in the world. Although this can be a
very difficult time in the lives of each couple, there silently stand the often overlooked real
victims, the innocent children. Children of divorce are more likely to experience behavioral,
academic, social and Psychological problems. Depending on the age, children experience
different emotional aspects in how they deal with the divorce of their parents. The adolescent
years can be the most detrimental, as this can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, sexual
intercourse and increased risk of criminal activity. Due to the family going from two incomes
to one, financial strain is inevitable in most cases, and can often lead to poverty. Of course, this
brings more stress, worry and insecurities as children see almost every aspect of the life they
have known, advancing to the unknown. Stability in the life of a child is vital to their biosocial,
cognitive and psychosocial development. The effects of divorce are rarely seen as temporary,
and can be a stumbling block throughout their lifetime. Their own marriage will likely suffer
and repeat the patterns of what hurt them the most throughout their childhood.
Unfortunately, divorce will never end, but there is hope for the children of tomorrow. Proper
training and education can be implemented to provide a better chance for a child going through
divorce to become all that God created them to be. This paper will go into further detail of
what could have been and what will be, dependent upon the parents.
