Kumamoto is a municipality located on the island of Kyushu in Japan. It has a population of over 1.8 million people spread across 14 cities, 10 counties, and 26 towns and 8 villages. Kumamoto has a warm climate with hot summers over 35 degrees Celsius and little snow in the winter except in the Aso district. It is famous for its well-preserved castle, local foods like horse meat (basashi) and hitomojiguruguru mushrooms. The area is also home to the large Aso caldera volcanic crater, the largest in the world.
