 James Cortopassi joined New Jersey Legal
(NJL) in 2009, and currently serves as Managing
Director of Litigation Support. In this role, James
Cortopassi coordinates e-discovery projects for
the company, during the information
governance, discovery and trial phases of
litigation.
In today’s world, significant amounts of data
are electronically stored. To ease the process
of legal practitioners sorting through this data,
NJL has developed an e-discovery service to
prioritize and gather vital information efficiently.
 The initial intake of e-discovery at NJL consists
of a three-step process, including assessing,
processing, and analyzing. Assessing involves
reviewing what a legal practitioner is seeking
and zeroing in on the data that is most relevant
to his or her case. James Cortopassi and his
team work intimately with his clients to develop
solution(s) that best fit their case at bar. The NJL
team use early matter assessment techniques,
including data and domain filtering features as
well as file type analysis and keyword searches
to expedite the process of gathering pertinent
information.
 In the processing stage, all types of information are
welcome, including multilingual data sources and server
backups, and the NJL team ensures the most concise
data is received by eliminating duplicate files. Tiffing is also
utilized to expedite sorting through large amounts of data.
All the information is then customized to a client’s
formatting preference.
Guided by an experienced NJL consultant in the analysis
stage, clients can employ the company’s analytical tools
to help enhance document review and work-flow. In
many cases, the tools reduce time invested into
document review by half, especially when a hybrid
technique is implemented, using subject matter expertise,
active learning and technology.
