This document provides a framework for tracking child behaviors using ABC charts. The chart is used to record the antecedent, or trigger, for a behavior, the specific behavior, and the consequence in response to the behavior. Noting date, time, setting, antecedent, behavior, consequence, possible function and comments allows caregivers to identify patterns and determine effective strategies to encourage positive behaviors.

Antecedent- What happens before the behavior ex. give a task, item taken away, child sees something he wants…
Behavior- What does the child do? Hit, scream, talk negative, how long-how hard-be specific
Consequence- What do you do-What happens after the behavior-reaction: Tell child to stop, ignore, scream, take something away…

Possible Function: Attention=child does behavior for attention
Escape: escape from a demand
Alone: Sensory=he likes the way it feels
Access to tangibles: access to an activity or favorite toys
