Human rights movement in India got its germination during the Emergency
Rule during 1975–1977 and developed during the post Emergency period.
Two major trends were marked by Civil liberties concerns and the rights
based perspectives. In the last 35 years, the human rights movement has been
enriched by collective wisdom emerging from the tribal movement, peasant
struggles, environmental movement, women’s liberation movement, child rights
movement, dalit movement and struggles of the differently abled persons. The
state and the mainstream institutions have had love hate relationships with

Vacha has impacted the lives of 77784 individuals through its creative and engaging programmes in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar Districts for building capacities in different areas.
Out of these, 70343 were extension beneficiaries, who have attended our events such as street play performances, meetings, rallies, newsletter release functions and public debates. Of these, 70 % were girls and women and 30% were boys and men
A total of 7441 i.e. 10 per cent were direct beneficiaries, who enrolled themselves for Vacha’s regular sessions, workshops, trainings, career fairs, gender and health fairs and camps and film screenings with follow up discussions on gender issues. Of these, 48% were girls, 23% were boys, 25% were women and 2% were men. We work with boys as they too are deprived, though the prevalent son preference gives them a preference at home for education and mobility. However with gender sensitisation, teenage boys become an excellent support group for girls, and together with girls in equal leadership roles, work on community issues.
The community residents (contemptuously called ‘slum dwellers’ though they themselves identify with the term basti for the community) are usually migrants from socioeconomically backward and very poor districts who have come in search of livelihood. Girls are affected in multiple ways as, besides the over arching gender and poverty issues many of them belong to religious and linguistic minorities. All of them have to deal with the orthodox mind set of elders as they still follow rather feudal practices of their villages.

Main concerns of women’s movement in India have been:
• Men outnumber women in India, unlike in most countries where the reverse is the case.
• Majority of women go through life in a state of nutritional stress - they are anaemic and malnourished. Girls and women face nutritional discrimination within the family, eating last and least.
• The average Indian woman has little control over her own fertility and reproductive health.
• Literacy rate is lower in women as compared to men and far fewer girls than boys go to school. Even when girls are enrolled, many of them drop out of school.
• Women’s work is undervalued and unrecognized. Women work longer hours than men and carry the major share of household and community work, which is unpaid and invisible.
• Once ‘women’s work’ is professionalized, there is practically a monopoly on it by men. For example, the professional chefs are still largely men. The Sexual Division of Labour ensures that women will always end up as having to prioritize unpaid domestic work over paid work. It is not a ‘natural’ biological difference that lies behind the sexual division of labour, but certain ideological assumptions.
• Women generally earn a far lower wage than men doing the same work, despite the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976. In no State do women and men earn equal wages in agriculture.
• Women are under-represented in various bodies of governance as well as decision-making positions in both public and private sectors.
• Women are legally discriminated against in land and property rights. Most women do not own property in their own names and do not get a share of parental property.
• Women face violence inside and outside the family throughout their lives.

Gender promises made by the state gets translated into gender
responsive budgetary commitments of the Union ministries and
departments. Like previous years, The Gender Budget Statement
(GBS) for the year 2019-20, in its Part A has provided schemes and
programmes 100% targeted for women and Part B had given the
schemes that are expected to use minimum of 30 per cent of the total
allocation for women and girls. The GBS is significant as it is the only
source of verifiable, quantitative information on government's efforts
at ensuring budgetary commitments towards women. The overall
financial allocation for the Union for 2019-20 (BE) is Rs. 1,31,700
crore, while the same for 2018-19 (BE) was Rs 1,24,367 crore. Thus
there is an increase of Rs. 7333 crores in the current budget

Women constitute a majority of the work force in the informal sector
everywhere. The informal sector is unregulated, unprotected, supports the
formal sector and so matches the profile of women in a society organised on
patriarchal values and practices. In South Asia, more than 90 per cent of the
workforce is employed in the informal economy. The informal economy also
acts as a sponge, absorbing retrenched, uneducated and untrained workers.
Though women workers in the informal economy (the unorganised sector)
are engaged in employment activities which contribute significantly to the
GDP of a country, their economic and social contribution remains hidden,
under or unvalued. The heterogeneous nature of the informal economy
ranging from part time and irregular workers in East Asia to home based, self
employed, sub contract workers in South east and South Asia, makes
computing the economic as well as social contribution by workers of this
sector difficult.

The dialectical relationship between `pedagogy' and `praxis', vis-à-vis the `women's question', had been a matter of great concern for pioneers of Women's Studies (WS) in India. The need to study women's issues in academic institutions and to conduct research based on experiential material and affirmative action had begun to be discussed among Indian women's studies scholars by the early eighties (Desai and Patel, 1988). The discourse on this subject has proved to be a fruitful exercise for activists, academics, researchers, policy planners and the UN system. This paper aims to critically reflect on women’s development initiative in Udwada and surrounding villages of Pardi Taluka, South Gujarat by Dr. Neera Desai, Head of Sociology Department and the founding Director of Research Centre for Women’s Studies (till she retired in 1985). She continued working with the project even after her retirement and took upon responsibility as an honorary Director of Centre for Rural Development (founded by her in 1981) of SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.
When Neeraben established Research Unit for Women’s Studies (RUWS) in 1974 in SNDT Women’s University, she had visualised action as an integral component of all programmes. In 1975, when UGC sponsorship came, RUWS became Research Centre for Women’s Studies (RCWS). Neeraben defined Women’s Studies (WS) as an academic discipline with five arms namely- research, documentation, teaching, training and action. Women’s studies as an academic discipline start with the premise that women have subordinate status in our society and the knowledge-base created by WS should be used for empowerment of women. Thus WS has a transformative potential in terms of changing the gender based power relations.

An Activist Fondly Known as Handewali Bai: Kamaltai Desai

It seems strange sitting in the local train from Govandi to Andheri and writing homage to Kamaltai Desai. Many memories crowd my mind. With her passing away one could say an entire generation of pioneers of the women’s movement who were committed to the cause of working women have left us orphaned. A big void has been created in terms of leadership.
I first met Kamaltai in 1974, when she visited Vadodara along with Mrinaltai Gore, Ahalyatai Rangnekar, Manjutai Gandhi and Taratai Reddy to form Vadodara branch of Anti Price Rise Women's Committee. As a college girl, I was highly impressed by her egalitarian ethos, courage of conviction, work ethics, Spartan lifestyle and her commitment to labour standards. Kamaltai was always at the forefront of struggle against price-rise, hoarding, black marketing and corruption. Mrinaltai and Kamaltai had also taken up issues of water supply in newly formed suburns in North Mumbai and both were popularly known as ‘Handewali Bai” and “Paniwali Bai”.

Pravinaben Patel was a matriarch with an electrifying personality. She was highly gifted, had a photographic memory, flair for picking up new languages-recipes-cultural legacies. She was a courageous woman who stood by me when I took revolutionary decisions of life-at the age of 10 (I decided not to wear gold in response to witnessing dowry harassment), became active in social movements when I was in high-school and continued to the same for the rest of my life. During my student days, whenever I was arrested for political work during emergency rule, my relatives would pressurize her to lock me in the home, but she would challenge them with a statement, if I lock her behind the door, she will jump out of the window. Instead of punishing her, we should discuss with her.”
Pravinaben’s dream of higher education got shattered as she had to run a joint family at the age of nineteen. She did not have mother-in-law. Her Father-in-law (my dada), unmarried sister-in-law (my foi) and unmarried brother-in-law (my kaka) were voracious readers, introvert and quite type; while my mom was extrovert, talkative and social. First of all, she targeted the later two for personal coaching to clear their S.S.C.E. exam. Even after leaving Vadodara and residing in other parts of the country, she continued her mission for educating boys and girls, men and women who were around her. 1. Current Macro Economic Scenario
The current macroeconomic scenario has intensified feminization of poverty. A mid-term evaluation of the
Eleventh Five Year Plan from a gender perspective therefore is the need of the hour. Real wages of a large number
of women have declined. Women’s work burden in unpaid care economy (cooking, cleaning, nursing, collecting
fuel, fodder, water, etc) has increased many-fold due to withdrawal of state from social sector (Chakraborty,
2008). Privatisation of education, health and insurance has increased unpaid work of women in the working
class and lower middle class households (Hirway, 2009)—not accounted in the system of national accounting.
Gender friendly implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in terms of skill
building, resource generation, work conditions and remuneration reaching actual women beneficiaries is still a
distant dream. While large majority of women are drowning in the ocean of market fundamentalism, they are
given small sticks in the form of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and micro finance to save themselves.
Inflation in agricultural commodities, sky rocketing prices of essential food items such as grain, vegetables
and seasonal fruits has imposed massive hardship for women. The Arjun Sengupta Committee’s Report on
Unorganized Sector Labour (2007, GoI) notes that over 394.9 million workers (more than 85 per cent of the
working population and more than 78 per cent of the workers in unorganised sector) live with an income of less
than Rs. 20 a day. 80% of the Scheduled Tribes and the Scheduled Castes, 80% of the Other Backward Classes
and 85% of Muslims belong to the categories of “poor and vulnerable,” who earn less than Rs. 20 a day. 21%
to 46% of men and 57% to 83% of women in non-agricultural sectors are employed as casual workers, who
get less than minimum wages. The unorganised work-force contributes around 60% to the national economic
output of the country.
The neoliberal economic policies of financial sector reforms; attacks on the livelihood base of the farmers,
forest people and slum dwellers; land grab in the name of creation of Special Economic Zones, massive
displacement and relocation of the masses to suit the interests of construction industry violate ‘rights’ or
‘entitlements’ of the urban and rural poor, especially women from the marginalized sections.

Gender promises made by the state gets translated into gender
responsive budgetary commitments of the Union ministries and
departments. Like previous years, The Gender Budget Statement
(GBS) for the year 2019-20, in its Part A has provided schemes and
programmes 100% targeted for women and Part B had given the
schemes that are expected to use minimum of 30 per cent of the total
allocation for women and girls. The GBS is significant as it is the only
source of verifiable, quantitative information on government's efforts
at ensuring budgetary commitments towards women. The overall
financial allocation for the Union for 2019-20 (BE) is Rs. 1,31,700
crore, while the same for 2018-19 (BE) was Rs 1,24,367 crore. Thus
there is an increase of Rs. 7333 crores in the current budget

Women constitute a majority of the work force in the informal sector
everywhere. The informal sector is unregulated, unprotected, supports the
formal sector and so matches the profile of women in a society organised on
patriarchal values and practices. In South Asia, more than 90 per cent of the
workforce is employed in the informal economy. The informal economy also
acts as a sponge, absorbing retrenched, uneducated and untrained workers.
Though women workers in the informal economy (the unorganised sector)
are engaged in employment activities which contribute significantly to the
GDP of a country, their economic and social contribution remains hidden,
under or unvalued. The heterogeneous nature of the informal economy
ranging from part time and irregular workers in East Asia to home based, self
employed, sub contract workers in South east and South Asia, makes
computing the economic as well as social contribution by workers of this
sector difficult.

The dialectical relationship between `pedagogy' and `praxis', vis-à-vis the `women's question', had been a matter of great concern for pioneers of Women's Studies (WS) in India. The need to study women's issues in academic institutions and to conduct research based on experiential material and affirmative action had begun to be discussed among Indian women's studies scholars by the early eighties (Desai and Patel, 1988). The discourse on this subject has proved to be a fruitful exercise for activists, academics, researchers, policy planners and the UN system. This paper aims to critically reflect on women’s development initiative in Udwada and surrounding villages of Pardi Taluka, South Gujarat by Dr. Neera Desai, Head of Sociology Department and the founding Director of Research Centre for Women’s Studies (till she retired in 1985). She continued working with the project even after her retirement and took upon responsibility as an honorary Director of Centre for Rural Development (founded by her in 1981) of SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.
When Neeraben established Research Unit for Women’s Studies (RUWS) in 1974 in SNDT Women’s University, she had visualised action as an integral component of all programmes. In 1975, when UGC sponsorship came, RUWS became Research Centre for Women’s Studies (RCWS). Neeraben defined Women’s Studies (WS) as an academic discipline with five arms namely- research, documentation, teaching, training and action. Women’s studies as an academic discipline start with the premise that women have subordinate status in our society and the knowledge-base created by WS should be used for empowerment of women. Thus WS has a transformative potential in terms of changing the gender based power relations.

It seems strange sitting in the local train from Govandi to Andheri and writing homage to Kamaltai Desai. Many memories crowd my mind. With her passing away one could say an entire generation of pioneers of the women’s movement who were committed to the cause of working women have left us orphaned. A big void has been created in terms of leadership.
I first met Kamaltai in 1974, when she visited Vadodara along with Mrinaltai Gore, Ahalyatai Rangnekar, Manjutai Gandhi and Taratai Reddy to form Vadodara branch of Anti Price Rise Women's Committee. As a college girl, I was highly impressed by her egalitarian ethos, courage of conviction, work ethics, Spartan lifestyle and her commitment to labour standards. Kamaltai was always at the forefront of struggle against price-rise, hoarding, black marketing and corruption. Mrinaltai and Kamaltai had also taken up issues of water supply in newly formed suburns in North Mumbai and both were popularly known as ‘Handewali Bai” and “Paniwali Bai”.

Pravinaben Patel was a matriarch with an electrifying personality. She was highly gifted, had a photographic memory, flair for picking up new languages-recipes-cultural legacies. She was a courageous woman who stood by me when I took revolutionary decisions of life-at the age of 10 (I decided not to wear gold in response to witnessing dowry harassment), became active in social movements when I was in high-school and continued to the same for the rest of my life. During my student days, whenever I was arrested for political work during emergency rule, my relatives would pressurize her to lock me in the home, but she would challenge them with a statement, if I lock her behind the door, she will jump out of the window. Instead of punishing her, we should discuss with her.”
Pravinaben’s dream of higher education got shattered as she had to run a joint family at the age of nineteen. She did not have mother-in-law. Her Father-in-law (my dada), unmarried sister-in-law (my foi) and unmarried brother-in-law (my kaka) were voracious readers, introvert and quite type; while my mom was extrovert, talkative and social. First of all, she targeted the later two for personal coaching to clear their S.S.C.E. exam. Even after leaving Vadodara and residing in other parts of the country, she continued her mission for educating boys and girls, men and women who were around her. My dada considered her as his daughter and asked her not to cover hear head. This created lot of unease among her in-laws circle.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the
core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
