124 SISTEMI DI SICUREZZA SEMPRE PIÙ “VERSO LA NUVOLA” - Safety & Security N. ...Cristian Randieri PhD

1. A SAMPLE FROM “SAPPHIRE AGENCY”
written by James Dale Bozeman

2. Before I provide the example pages from the script, it
might be best to explain the main plot so as not to confuse
readers.
There are mutants on Earth already, who can be identified
by their fangs, mutants who are immune to fire and
lightning. These mutants, who identify themselves as
Mobians, and the humans who accept their existence banded
together years ago to form an agency called the Sapphire
Agency.
Currently the agency is at war with a traitor named Dr.
Ethan Raskoph—who had decimated almost the entire
population of a floating island, bombed a plane carrying
the mother of the deuteragonist, and capturing millions of
agents to be used for experiments. Seventeen years prior
to the main story the children and younger siblings of the
agents had been quickly escorted out of the bases and sent
to locations where supposedly they would live free from
Raskoph’s terror. Unfortunately, this did not end well for
a lot of the parents in the agency; the parents of the
protagonist, for example, died in a violent storm out at
sea. However, the children were deeply inspired by their
parents and elder siblings and, following the defeat and
disappearance of the original agents, they all forged a
pact to continue fighting in the stead of the former.
The protagonist, 21-year-old Dr. Michael Lucas “Doc”
Preston, is an expert technologist and mechanic gifted with
flight, multiple non-weapon Martial Arts, and five senses
far superior to that of the average human. When he was in
the agency they seemed to overlook him. As a result, he
quit and is now a lone-wolf antihero and ridiculously
furious against the criminal underworld, even though many
say he wants to be a hero to prove he can be counted on.
What he didn’t know was that after his disappearance the
agency would search diligently for him for four years.
When they finally spot him in Minneapolis. They send in
his former best friend, 24-year-old deuteragonist Shane
Harlow. Shane’s top speed is 768mph. He has also become
adept at battle techniques common only to Sapphire Agents.
Shane is a drifter, easy-going, laid-back, short-tempered,
impatient with slower objects, a habitual daredevil,
honest, and loyal to friends. Some say he took Preston
under his wing purely out of the goodness of his heart, but
whenever a girl asks to date him he disproves the rumor;
Preston had some worth for being under Shane’s roof and he
wants to regain Preston’s friendship, eventually.
This sample starts on page nineteen, when Shane is about to
meet Doc for the first time in four years.
3. 19
He leaves the room and closes the door behind him.
CUT TO:
EXT. – ROOF, WALMART S.C., BLOOMINGTON, MN – 1.5 HRS. LATER
Preston is standing on the roof, looking at the customers
to the store.
CUT TO:
MONTAGE – SAME (CUT BACK BETWEEN “P.O.V. – PRESTON” AND
“EXT. - WALMART S.C., ROOF”) – Through this, we gradually
understand that Preston’s hearing and sight can perceive
what those of most other humans cannot.
CUT TO:
EXT. - WALMART S.C., ROOF – SAME
OFF SCREEN, Shane arrives behind Preston. Preston shows
frustration, as though he knows Shane is there, and turns
around to see him, now ON-SCREEN.
SHANE
(friendly)
Long time, no see, Doc.
PRESTON
(angry; calm)
Not long enough, Harlow.
He turns back around to face the parking lot.
SHANE
(surprised)
(walking up to his side)
What’s with the attitude? I thought we
were friends!
Preston turns back to face Shane.
PRESTON
(still angry; still calm)
Why do you think I disappeared in the
first place? How would you feel if
people once treated you like a child
and you had reasons to suspect they
would never change?
4. 20
SHANE
(incredulous)
We were trying to protect you from what
we had to do!
PRESTON
You all knew I had just as much reason
to sign up as everyone else did!
SHANE
Raskoph didn’t kill your parents, Doc.
They died in a thunderstorm.
PRESTON
Do you remember what they told us the
night they died? Do you want them to
have done so in vain?
Shane slowly turns to the parking lot.
SHANE
So, that’s it.
PRESTON
I thought you knew.
He turns back around again.
SHANE
Not everyone’s a genius, Doc.
Preston turns back to Shane again.
PRESTON
You don’t have to be a genius. You
just have to think about everything you
sense. Did I not show that I was still
regretting what happened to them?
PAUSE
They both turn to the parking lot.
SHANE
I didn’t pay attention.
PRESTON
I’m not surprised.
(turning back to Shane)
5. 21
PRESTON (CONTINUED)
And another thing my father said was
that the storm was constructed by one
or more animate objects.
He turns back to the lot again.
SHANE
Raskoph isn’t Sapphire’s only enemy
capable of such; there’s also the Black
Mass and Wendelin Woodrow’s gang. I
almost mentioned the Devas Order, but
I’ve heard what happened to them.
PRESTON
I was hoping to get their attention by
using your name.
SHANE
Was it also you who sent the local
Advance Sapphires to our base here?
PRESTON
I didn’t want the agency searching for
me. I still like to be left alone.
SHANE
You could have easily sent them to
Raskoph.
PRESTON
Yes, if I didn’t remember that he is a
living monster who will never change.
That doesn’t mean much, though.
SHANE
You could also have kept them for
yourself.
PRESTON
I almost did.
(SHORT PAUSE)
And about the Devas Order, I was
surprised when only eight of them
showed up. Did Duriott really figure
out what he was doing?
SHANE
He did. He turned himself in and is –

SHANE (CONTINUED)
- now on strict probation.
PRESTON
And I suppose Jr. Raskoph has finally
garnered the pride of his father?
SHANE
He has. They’re working together now.
SHORT PAUSE
PRESTON
And those other two?
SHORT PAUSE
SHANE
Ariel and I didn’t take too fondly to
what Fleming and that so-called cousin
of mine did to you. We took care of
them personally three weeks ago.
PRESTON
So, she still has that sledgehammer?
SHANE
And a mean swing to compliment it.
PRESTON
How typical of her.
(SHORT PAUSE)
How long did it take Curtis to hack
into the government files?
SHANE
(surprised)
(turning to Preston)
How did you know it was Evan?
PRESTON
Process of elimination of choices. I
was the only other person who could
stand a chance-unless Curtis taught it
to somebody, like Clinton.
SHANE
(curious)
I noticed that you call everyone –

7. 23
SHANE (CONTINUED)
- eighteen years old or older by their
last names.
PRESTON
Just those that I’m not pleased with-
the result of No Nonsense Syndrome.
SHANE
What happens if my sister and I visit
you at the same time?
PRESTON
I’m not as mad at Ariel as I am at you.
She knew that I wouldn’t be myself if I
didn’t try to solve all the world’s
problems alone-or, at least, do most of
the work.
SHANE
We all knew you’d break if you tried to
solve all the world’s problems.
PRESTON
(sarcastically)
Yean, because that would stop me, ever.
(PAUSE. During which Shane turns back to
the parking lot.)
(irritated)
Are you going to tell me why you’re
here or not?
SHANE
We’ve been looking for you for the past
four years, trying to make sure you
didn’t get into trouble.
PRESTON
Good luck with that.
SHANE
We want you back on the agency.
PRESTON
You already know the answer to that.
SHANE
(He sighs.)
Your sight is narrowed, you know.
