A Report on The Esperanza Splading Music Concert In Basel 2012
The name of the concert I watched was “Esperanza Spalding,” performed by Radio Music
Society performed in Avi Basel 2012. During the performance there was an orchestra on the
orchestra under the rostrum that consisted of trumpet, trumpet and backing vocals, trombone,
soprano sax, sax, guitar, piano, Rhodes, keyboards, drums, violin and cello. Then for the voices
there was a cast that all sung during the musical at their designated times. In this musical there
were at least a group o 14 cast members. Esperanza Spalding, Igmar Thomas, Leala Cyr, Jeff
Galindo, Corey King, Dan “Daniele” Blake, Renato Caranto, Tia Fuller, Aoron Burnett, Jeff Lee,
Leo Genovese, Lyndon Rochelle, Nicholas Crosa and Pancy Chang.
I absolutely loved how the musical started off on the rostrum, with the audience sitting on the
hall which was fully packed who inquisitively waited for the performance to be staged. The
rostrum looked elegant with sprinkles of colorful lights. Then an alluring voice just busted out of
nowhere, the name of the performer who looked fabulous with white attire was Esperanza
Splading with the orchestra in the background seeming to compliment her feminine voice. With
singing there was also a bit of humor that made it seem not serious making me more willing to
listen.
The first song to perform was Us written by Thad Jones and the Mel Lewis orchestra. The
instruments consisted comprised of a acute sounding consonance which was set at a peaceful
mood in the introductory stage of the song. A saxophone together with a piano spiced up the
melody of the song in a lovely manner.

As the song advanced, the saxophone took the center stage, raising the texture as the other
instrument accompanied it. The steady rhythm seemed to start getting higher till the peak of the
song.
Then the second song to perform was “Hold on Me,” which was written by Etta James, was
chacteristically fused with interminnent instruments converging at the peak with a round pound
only to revert to a moderate level. Voice and tonal variations ruled the song from the kick start to
the tail end. The melody involved rising and falling patterns from time to time.
The cadence was also very flexible, with varied patterns which mostly came from the
instrumentation, Esperanza Splading herself. Also very frequent was changes from long notes to
short notes, which rhymed with the cadence variations, guitar, piano and saxophone. An
improvisation technique was used and the performer used at times specific motive of notes
seemed to change gradually while other times they changed suddenly accompanied with
trumpets violin piano and guitar. Although most of the parts of the song was homophonic as the
cadence transcended. The instruments were used to transform the song to a polyphonic texture.
In other word, notes are started in a static and homophonic manner, only to turn into a dynamic
polyphonic texture with a mixture of orchestration. She also involved Syncopation technique
where she emphasizes on the drumbeats and rhythms. The performance was extremely
captivating and strongly provoked my emotions All through; the song had deeply consumed my
thoughts and felt like I was part of the live audience. Moments of interminnent pauses and
orchestra left my heart pumping with pleasure.

Incidentally the performance was superb, the experience could have been either better even
better if the performer could have engaged in more bodily performance. To sum up, erotic
composition could have been more emotive and pleasant on my part.
