Einstein writes a letter to President Roosevelt on August 2nd, 1939 regarding recent work by Fermi and Szilard on using uranium as an energy source. He explains that it is possible to create a nuclear chain reaction and generate large amounts of power from uranium. This could also enable the construction of extremely powerful bombs that could destroy ports and surrounding areas. The United States has poor uranium resources while the most is found in Belgian Congo. Einstein recommends that Roosevelt appoint a liaison to the physicists working on chain reactions to help fund further research and address issues like securing uranium ore for national security reasons.
