This is the material I presented during the meetup organized by Google Developers Group Istanbul (GDGIstanbul) on September 2014. I tried to explain what micro services concept is and shared our experiences about how we developed and deployed to production systems.

A Gentle Introduction to Micro Services - From Theory into Practice

OSv is the new open source unikernel technology that combines the power of virtualization and micro-services architecture. This combination allows unmodified applications to be packaged just like Docker containers while at the same time outperform bare-metal deployments. Yes. You've heard it right: for the first time ever we can stop asking the question of how much performance would I lose if I virtualize. OSv lets you ask a different question: how much would my application gain in performance if I virtualize it. This talk will start by looking into the architecture of OSv and the kind of optimizations it makes possible for native, unmodified applications. We will then focus on JVM-specific optimizations and specifically on speedups available to micro-service oriented applications when they are being deployed on OSv.

Vertical thinking for a simple architecture! Micro Services are a new way of architectural thinking in web platforms. The key idea is strongly aligned on the unix philosophy: Create small services which are only responsible for one thing and make them work together. With this in mind, you get simple applications, which can be developed, deployed and scaled independent from each other. The key challenge in using micro services is to decompose applications vertically, by their functional domains. Only with this, you are able to reduce dependencies and create simple applications. On a technical side, micro services are backed by a wide support in different programming languages and open source frameworks. Especially the state of the art deployment mechanisms make this approach possible at all.

Information included in this infographic is based on a recent survey, and resulting whitepaper published by The Service Council (TSC). The report, prepared by Sumair Dutta, Chief Customer Officer at The Service Council is entitled Customer Experience Management: Strategies to Succeed. Müşteriler, kaçırılan tarihler ve çıktının düşük kalitesi nedeniyle hayal kırıklığına uğruyor. Her yazılım geliştirme ekibi kendi dinamiklerini yaratır. Çalışanların davranışlarıyla ekiplerin gizli dinamiklerini toplandığımızda şirketteki yazılım geliştirme kültürünü oluşturuyoruz. Bu, bir yazılım geliştirme takımının ne kadar başarılı olabileceğini tanımlayan, en önemli faktörlerden biridir. Git Anti-Patterns: How To Mess Up With Git and Love it Again

Git is one of the most powerful tool in developers' toolbox. If you use it correctly, it dramatically increases productivity of developers and eliminates the waste products continuously. Developers cultivate a development culture on top Git most of the time. It's powerful but its power is untamed. Many teams fall into several traps of misusing commands and therefore feel uncomfortable while using Git. We mess up Git history, the codebase and the whole preferred branching strategy in seconds. We use branches, merge/rebase strategies, creating commits in wrong ways. Even we never take committing paradigms into account while using Git. As a software craftsman, I've been using Git for years and I've already educated Git to hundreds of developers in all levels. I'm so lucky; I had a chance to experience huge amount of anti-patterns in time. In this talk, I will talk about what those anti-patterns are and what should we do in order not to fall into them.

As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.

Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
