3. About the author William D. Ellis …
William D. Ellis was born in Concord,
Massachusetts. He began writing at the age
of 12, at the urging of an elementary-school
teacher who early on discerned his talent.
Ellis's study of the history of Ohio provided
him material that he eventually used as the
foundation for a trilogy of novels: Bounty
Lands, Jonathan Blair: Bounty Lands Lawyer,
and The Brooks Legend. Each of his novels
appeared on best-seller lists, and the
trilogy itself eventually earned its author a
Pulitzer Prize nomination. The most
important recurring theme in his works is
the triumph of survival.

5. Duke was a rough-playing Doberman Pinscher, four
year old, 23 kilos. His coat was red with a fawn
vest. Chuck Hooper had doubts at first about
buying him because his
wife, Marcy, was not really a dog lover. She's a
tiny blonde; Pomeranian was her idea of the
right-size dog for a colonial house on a small plot.
This Duke needed a hectare.
Chuck visited Duke at the kennel several times
before he made up his mind. After about three
months, he decided he had to have the big
Doberman. Duke's appeal for Chuck was his
rambunctiousness. It took a long time before
Marcy was more than polite to the dog.

7. About the lesson…
charles Hooper was a man of courage. He met with a severe
accident and got paralysed but he mustered courage to
adapt himself to the new situation. He displayed great
persevarance during his struggle for survival with the help
of his dog Duke. Not a single day went effortless. There
was a commendable gradual progress from moving a step
on the first day of his effort to walking upto the porch,
then to the fence post, to the intersection and finally to
the district office. Many a times he lost his balance and
fell down exhausted but he had wonderful endurance that
kept him going. Hooper was a person with full of
determination. He set dates as objectives and with the
help of Duke could acheive the same. He had faith in
himself and ability. No one could dare to say that a
paralysed man couldn 't do the job of a moving salesman
taking into account the hardwork he did for a comeback.
Hence they created a special desk job for him. All along

was “a hard−charging zone sales manager for a
chemical company”. A six-feet-one, who had played
on the university football team, was now all settled
with his little blonde wife, Marcy. His “big genuine

was going for him”.
(b)They said that they would create a desk job for

Ans: Hooper was hospitalised after he had subdural
haemorrhage as he met with an accident. After the first critical
month had passed, in the fifth week, few men from his
company came to visit and told him to take a year off, after
seeing his condition. They said they would create a desk job
for Hooper
at the company’s headquarters. They told Charles to take a year
off and decided to assign him a desk job as his body’s left
portion was paralysed.
(c) Duke was an extraordinary dog. What special qualities did he
exhibit to justify this? Discuss.
Ans :Duke was a rough playing Doberman Pinscher. When

Ans: Hooper’s move presented problems in the
company’s headquarters. Chuck was fighting hard to
come back, so nobody could tell him that he couldn’t
handle the job. Beside it was a job of sales, what
good can a salesperson do, “who cannot move
around, and can work only one hour a day?”
However, Hooper had the target set in his mind,
March 1, a full day’s work. It was Duke who would pull
Chuck all the way till the office and then bring him
back home as well. All said that the dog knew his
responsibility “to get Chuck back on his feet”. After
thirteen months of meditation, Charles Hooper was
promoted to Regional Manager covering more than
four states.
17. (e) Why do you think Charles Hooper's appointment as
Assistant National Sales Manager is considered to be a
tribute to Duke?
ans: yes, After some time when Chuck was promoted to
Assistant National Sales Manager, the words drafted by
the headquarters of the chemical company said, “...
therefore, to advance our objectives step by step,
Charles Hooper is appointed Assistant National Sales
Manager”, as all knew that without Duke it would not
have been possible for Chuck to make such quick
improvement and tribute Hooper’s promotion to Duke.
