Between 1991 and 1995, Serbia and Bosnian Serb forces systematically removed Bosnian Muslims from territory in Bosnia and Herzegovina through ethnic cleansing. This included surrounding Sarajevo, the capital city. The largest mass killing since the Holocaust in Europe occurred in July 1995 in Srebrenica, where over 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed. NATO air strikes eventually stopped the attacks and genocide against Bosnian Muslims, and the Dayton Agreement in 1995 established that Serbs would control 49% of Bosnia's land.
